Heading Northeast - Axiom Message Boards

Will say good bye till next week, taking off to SFO at 4am in the morning for a 7am flight. Will be arriving at Toronto about 3pm, pick up the rental and off to meet John Bridgman. The plan is to leave Toronto early enoguh to arrive at Axiom around 10am on Friday.
From the weather forecast, I am packing for some cool weather compared to here at home. Hope to have some new pics to post when I return, and notes about the visit.

Looks like the Halo's are not the only thing I'm jealous about.

I still think you should drive the new Z. You know you have to break it in just like speakers, ha ha. That way you can stop by my place and deliver my new sub.

I was unable to make it up for the GTG in September, so Dennis and John have been so kind as to allow me to tag along with them at the plant.

I'm looking forward to meeting them both, and hopefully Amie & Ian as well.

We discussed this yesterday. I have spare parkas, insulated boots and snowmobile mitts. Then again, I'm finally at the stage of my life where both of my vehicles have working heaters

That reminds me of when I was 18 years old in the Navy.I was stationed in Gulfport Mississippi and had a 1972 VW station wagon that the heater was always on.Man that was one hot summer

.It never ocurred to me until it was years to late to just unplug or pull the fuse on the heater

Something like that. Lack of sleep is a contributing factor as well. Dennis just found out that the 8:25 AM ticket he purchased got processed as 8:40 PM flight instead, so we're trying to figure out a new plan for tomorrow. United said he could change the flight back to 8:25 AM for only $1019 US.

Ouch! This is terrible news.

One could purchase an ep500 for that price.

Wish you guys the best of luck. Hope you sort out this unfriendly situation in your favor.

One of my business associates went through a similar problem with United just recently. Thinking he could get an earlier flight home he drove from Milwaukee to Chicago. They charged him an extra $375 because he didn't fly the whole route (Milwaukee/Chicago/Vancouver). He ended up leaving Chicago on the same late flight. Look's like all these airlines in bankruptcy protection are trying to recoup their losses?

Well, if anyone else honors us with a visit, the staff has requested that you have Bridgman drive you up. His wonderful dogs made our Friday even more fun!

Chess, Tharkun was commenting that your photo essay was the most definitive. He knew his way around even though it was his first time there!

It was so fun having Tharkun and Bridgman check out our chamber, take part in experiments, do blind listening, and make passionate cases for new products. We loved the visit! Real80sMan was able to join us for half the day too, which was great fun. Always neat to put faces to the names.

Next up is Toronto Hi-Fi to see the chamber, but then we're open! Come by sled!

With all the "room" isues I'm having, I'd like to make the trip just to hear the speakers in an anechoic chamber!

I haven't had time to post a proper report, but I have to thank Amie, Ian, Tom and the rest of the Axiom crew for their wonderful hospitality. It was a very informative *and* a very enjoyable day.

Listening tests are hard. I have no idea why people volunteer for them

My dogs and I will be forever grateful for allowing them to spend the evening curled up in the back of Amie's Jeep with the engine running and the heater on high, nice and warm on a really cold night, while we were dining in the restaurant.

The dogs spent most of the day in Axiom's front office. Every few minutes you would hear the door open, followed by ferocious barking and growling, followed by a loud "awww" and the sound of the new arrival talking baby talk to the dogs. I don't even want to THINK about what the day cost Axiom in terms of lost productivity. The dogs pretty much shut down the front office and probably didn't help customer support levels either

Wow... I think of crime as being pretty low in NH, but I couldn't imagine leaving my engine running while in a restaurant.

Oh, wait. I just remembered that one of your dogs looked positively evil... I'm sure no one went near the Jeep!

It's a REALLY nice area, although I agree every locale has its share of lowlifes. I can't think of a nicer place to live or to run a business.

Arrived back home about midnight last night, so was a bit late this morning in getting to the puter. But then I had a problem when I connected the camera to the puter to upload pictures. Seems I just had some of the USB ports on the MB die. Just know getting it working again now.
I had good intentions of taking lots of pics, but since I had left the camera and bateries in Johns jeep for hours, when I took it into the Axiom office it did not want to work. Since John and I were kept very busy with the tour, some testing, and talking about many things, the camera was never checked again. So after being at Axiom for about 12 hours, I managed to leave without one picture.
Now this could have been some new electronic deveice that had been installed at the Axiom door, disabling all cameras, or could be just the California camera did not like the cold.....not sure which.

I will need some time to compose a report of the day at Axiom, but wish to thank Amie for arranging such an interesting and entertaing day for John and I. Other than being to short of a visit, it was more than worth the travel to meet every one at Axiom, and spend time with the people I had come to know so well over the puter and phone.
Ian and Amie are so good at making one feel like part of the family, that once there one does not want to leave.

I want to thank all at Axiom, and John as well for giving me shelter and his company. This was a great trip and wouldl like to return again, great people, great food, and more fun than I have had in a long time.

Dennis, you really should come and stay longer. I know there were a bunch of rooms you wanted to spend a longer time in - the machine shop . . . the woodshop . . . learning to program CNC code to speed your reno along . . .

Not sure about a speaker being tested the usual way, but if it had the spikes for feet and dropped on a toe like a certain person did, there would be a lot of "ugly noise".

Amie speaking of which, I was told that in 'the chamber' one can actually hear the blood pumping through their veins and being alone in there is a very eerie experience. True?

I've heard it's very disorienting. It's amazing how much information about the environment your ears pick up from reflected sound. I bet it would drive a blind person absolutely nuts to be stuck in an anechoic chamber.

You can indeed hear you blood pumping. I had to wait for Alan to arrive last Friday to be shut in the chamber for the first time. I couldn't convince myself Ian, Mike or Tom would let me back out again! But you're right, Peter - the lack of reflection makes you catch your balance right away. We shut Bridgman and Tharkun in but I don't know if they stopped talking and heard the rush? They were getting an official explanation of what everything was there for.

Amie and Ian let me and my son Michael into the chamber on sunday noon and it was quite the experience. Spoken words sound flat without the echo and you can definitely hear your heart pumping and blood circulating. I had to speak directly toward Mike or Ian to be understood. Really a neat experience though mildly disorienting. I don't know if I could spend a long time in that room. I was also impressed with all the state of the art sound generators, microphones, amplifiers, recording equipment and oscilliscopes. Talk about serious research and development! No wonder Axiom speakers sound so good.
