I know there's at least one or two coffee nuts out there, so I though you'd appreciate this. The greatest invention for coffee in the home since... ever? Invented by the same guy who did the Aerobie flying disc.

http://www.aerobie.com/Products/aeropress.htm

Only $30, and supposedly makes better coffee than even the most expensive espresso machines.

I want one. An article, and some customer reviews.

(no, I'm not affiliated )

it's actually different from a french press. Did you read the article?
Posted By: tomtuttle Re: Attention coffee freaks - 01/17/06 08:09 PM
I'm intrigued, but not yet convinced. Perhaps more importantly, I'm pretty sure I'm not willing to go to that much trouble.

Nice find. Where do you come up with this stuff?

My bad, I did now and what caught my attention was 30 seconds! That's what I'm taling about!! Anything to get caffeine in my bloodstream faster.

I don't think we're coffee freaks, but . . . Ian and Alan conducted lengthy time-delay tests on coffee this summer . . . I came home after a weekend away to find five brands of coffee, each with exactly one pots' worth taken out (Ian needed to be sure we weren't stuck in a rut. We weren't.) . . . sometimes at night I go to sleep anticipating the taste of my morning coffee . . .

All that aside, we have long felt that the water makes almost as much difference as the roast. Last Saturday we finally tested that theory, swapping out our hearty, chunky, fresh-from-the-lake water for a bottle of Dansai, and it really did make a difference! Lake of Bays water or bust!

i might qualify as a freak after spending a lot of time last year on coffeegeek.com.

Intriguing product, but then you have buy those filters.

After spending almost a year w/ my grinder and expresso machine, I would agree w/ the coffee fanatics that the grinder and beans can make a bigger difference than the machine. I get beans from a small roaster, close to the roasting period. I spent the money on a good grinder and it's worth it. Starbuck's and even Peet's espresso doesn't even come close to beans like Barefoot and Tigerwalk.

I'm sure if you compared this w/ French press and really good beans, you'd get a better taste, granted it wouldn't be as fast. Although, it does take me about a few minutes total to make a latte, including grinding beans and frothing milk.

Thanks Peter.
I am a coffee freak, and I think I'll order one tonight.
BTW: I just started ordering coffee from Silver Canyon Coffee and love the Loggers Lift, Java and Kona blends they offer. I'll try some of their other blends next month.

I need to score me some Jamaican Blue Mountain...
Posted By: bray Re: Attention coffee freaks - 01/17/06 11:19 PM
I've ordered it from here once, and although it took a couple of weeks for me to get it, the wait was well worth it.
Now if I could find some reasonably priced PURE Kona, I'd be in heaven.

I second Tom's sentiments re the coffee maker.

I wish I hadn't given away my espresso machine.

Oldskoolboarder, what do you think of the Mayorga brand Ethiopian Yirgacheffe available from JRCigars.com? I really like it (and can actually afford it). Any links or recommendations for Sumatran Blue Lintong? I liked TJs version years ago, but they must have changed sources a while back - not nearly as good.

I think I'm gonna go check out coffeegeeks.com too.

Hmm, not sure. Haven't tried those, I'm strictly an espresso bean guy. Here's my 2 favs:

Tigerwalk

Barefoot Element 114

Barefoot are hardcore coffee folk. I went to buy some beans and asked for a shot to go. They looked at me like a killed someone. Never order to go from a "real" coffee house. They would only do it the proper way, single/double shot in a pre-heated demitasse cup. I like it that way too, makes you slow down and enjoy it.

Have any of you beheld the fine art of latte art? It's almost a shame to drink one.
Posted By: oldskoolboarder Re: Attention coffee freaks - 01/18/06 01:05 AM
That's stuff is crazy. Way beyond my coffee needs...
Posted By: Ken.C Re: Attention coffee freaks - 01/18/06 01:25 AM
We're trying out Caribou coffee right now. It's pretty good stuff. Of course, just plain Trader Joe's Kona is pretty damn good stuff. Unfortunately, they upped the price.

Why do I get the feeling I'm talking about Paradigm Monitors with a bunch of Revel owners?
Posted By: bray Re: Attention coffee freaks - 01/18/06 01:55 AM
I like the Expresso Porn.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Attention coffee freaks - 01/18/06 03:44 AM
Aaaaaaaggh! You said Expresso!
Posted By: bray Re: Attention coffee freaks - 01/18/06 03:45 AM
sssssssorry.

I got hooked on quad shot white chocolate mochas about four years ago. And at four bucks a cup, plus another buck to tip the gals, five bucks a day…..every day rain or shine, I did the math and bought a machine that would make real espresso. I think I spent about $800 on a refurbished machine and it lasted a good three and half years. I just recently bought this machine to replace the dead one. http://www.wholelattelove.com/Capresso/F9.cfm The old one probably made a good 2500 cups of espresso / latte’s or other before it died. At four bucks each, it more than paid for itself.

You can pick up refurbished machines at about half the price from this store, and both of mine were basically brand new. They even smelled new.

Posted By: oldskoolboarder Re: Attention coffee freaks - 01/18/06 06:05 AM
Cool, I got a refurb from them as well, granted my machine was probably the tax on your new baby...

Gaggia Evolution and Rocky Rancilio grinder.

Peter

BTW:

As it turns out, eXpresso is really nothing to "Aaaaaaaggh!" about.
I'm not an idiot, I'm a variant.

Give me a Mister Coffee and 100 lbs of Folgers and I'm a happy guy.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Attention coffee freaks - 01/18/06 07:57 PM
Might as well just go with the instant Folgers and skip the Mr. Coffee.
Posted By: F107plus5 Re: Attention coffee freaks - 01/18/06 08:44 PM
I have been a diehard Folgers fan for at least the last thirty five years and will defend Folgers until....

I have a big happy cup of Folgers from my Hamilton Beach Brewstation, sitting right here right now

Instant Folgers, now that's another story!! Great for dieters! Two cups of that stuff and the "shakes" will use up 83 calories an hour. I kept my weight delightfully under control thru much of the 80s with Folgers Instant!!

I've tried all the fancy coffee choices throughout the years, and always, ALWAYS, go back to just plain ol' no fuss Folgers!

.....by the gallon!!

Folks, his taste buds must be dead.

Uh oh, did I miss something?

....had to go get another cup of coffee!!

Actually, I'll admit that canned Illy coffee is quite good.
