I've finished up my electronica disc if anyone still would like to swap. Just send me a PM. Heck, even if you don't have anything to swap, I'm happy to send out copies if you are *seriously* interested. Hey...there's even a bonus disc included! The bonus consists of only two songs...one being 28 minutes which I felt the need to include as well as another essential song that doesn't quite fit in with the rest.

The music is basically a mixed bag. It's eases you in with a downtempo electro song along with some nice groovy ones, then comes some wild and crazy drum 'n bass and IDM (intelligent dance music), followed by some dancier tunes, then finally chills out at the end. The only stuff you aren't going to hear is house music which I can't stand. Although there's a lot of beats going on, this is definitely not a disc that you would throw in at a party, that's for sure!

Oh, and it sounds fantastic on the Axioms! The best way to listen is loud with the lights off!

Mary, if you could do this for me I would appreciate it very much. I'm pretty much computer illiterate(did I spell that right? lol) and don't have the skills to make a return cd. I would love to have a copy. I'll compensate if needed. Thanks.

i am not sure what electronica... music is. But I wouldn't mind experiencing something new and maybe i'll like it. Is there any way to download a sample?? so i can get an idea what it is. If not, i wouldn't mind getting a copy. Of course, would compensate you for whatever cost is involved.

thanks

That's what's great about these swaps.... I couldn't tell you the difference between House and Electronica!

I'm liking the new Trip-Hop station on XM lately though..... if that earns me any cool (ummm..."kewl") points!

Hmm.. ya know, I'm almost tempted to swap you for a disc of electronic industrial...

Mark, you're cool no matter what!

Actually, House music is is a subgenre of electronica. I don't necessarily like the term, "electronica", because it's so broad. I like it better than "techno" though!

Anyway, here's a good definition of electronica:
Electronica is a rather ambiguous term that covers a wide range of electronic or electronic-influenced music. The term has been defined by some to mean modern electronic music that is not necessarily designed for the dance-floor, but rather for home listening. The origins of the term are murky, although it appears to have been coined by British music paper Melody Maker in the mid-1990s, originally to describe the electronic rock band Republica.

i'd love a disc. Strangely I've been listening to the electronica channel on XM (through DirectTV) while doing housework, really makes it go by faster!! maybe tomorrow i'll get off my dead a$$ and finish with the mix cd i've been "working" on. Gotta warn you though, it's gonna have a heavy dose of Celtic (not new agey) on it.
Posted By: INANE Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/11/06 12:06 AM
I love everything 'Electronic or Techno' so I know I'd love to check this one out... but I'd feel bad taking without giving so let me see if I can get motivated to put a disk together myself.

Thought I was one of only a few that loves music in this genre, seems to be growing.

Posted By: sonicfox Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/11/06 01:56 AM
Hi INANE! If you are already a fan of the genre, you might have a lot of the stuff that I put on the disc already. I've included a lot of popular "fan favorites" from the genre...like Aphex Twin's-'Flim', Orbital's-'The Box', Juno Reactor's-'Pistolero', etc. If you don't have these, then certainly let me know!
Posted By: sonicfox Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/11/06 02:27 AM
blackorp, I've uploaded a track from the disc for you (and anyone else) to check out. It's inbetween the weirder and more accessible stuff that I've included. If you can get through it and enjoy it, then you may be interested.

Here it is...Squarepusher's 'Beep Street'.
Posted By: INANE Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/11/06 05:23 AM
I absolutely love Juno, Aphex, and Orbital (yes I have em ). If I put together a list it would probably have some Utah Saints, Basic Pleasure Model (or Pyskosonik )... could go on forever but in the meantime anyone not familar with Delerium check this one out (Terra firma). It's a great song and fun for your subs.
Posted By: blackorp Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/11/06 08:41 AM
thanks for the samples. interesting music. I prefer techno/electronic with female vocals mixed in. One of my favorite is one of the song from "hackers" movie and another one was in "Nip Tuck".

I checked out delerium website, i like their work. It seems they are offering their website domain name for 5K.

An electronic industrial CD sounds good to me if one gets made. I just saw NIN in Atlantic City last night. Great show, but I couldn't figure out why my calves were hurting at first today. I realized it was from being crushed up against the front of GA (I was in the second row in front of Trent) and having to push back to try to give myself some room. I was drenched by the time I got out of there, but it appears that it was a good workout.
Posted By: INANE Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/13/06 01:42 AM
I love Industrial too... NIN, KMFDM, Skinny Puppy, VNV Nation, Sister Machine Gun. Basically anything they play on Digital Gunfire

I'm completely in love with the 5.1 mix of The Downward Spiral and With Teeth. I believe I heard Pretty Hate Machine is getting remastered too.
Posted By: DOUBTINGTHOMAS29 Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/13/06 07:31 AM
I never thought I'd find another "audiophile" who mentioned Skinny Puppy in a thread. They are my favorite band of all-time. I've got to see some great IDM/Industrial bands the last year or so. I've seen Plaid, Skinny Puppy, Thrill Kill Kult, Front 242, Biaxial Creep, Not Breathing, Meat Beat Manifesto and I'm going to see Ladytron this April.
Posted By: INANE Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/13/06 02:12 PM
Some great bands mentioned there. I have a good friend who also loves to go to concerts like that (and Skinny Puppy is his fav band of all time). I admit I haven't seen a lot of those bands but I hear from him that they are usually great shows.

As far as being an "audiophile" and loving Electronic styled music, I have to say a lot of it really does sound great on good speakers (some not so much unfortunately ). Being that most of the music is "programed" vs "played" I've found that Electronic music loves to be listened to in surround (DTS:NEO, DPLII, Logic7, etc) more so then traditional styled music. Makes me feel like I'm utilizing my system more and of course that makes me happy.

Posted By: sonicfox Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/13/06 03:59 PM
I'm a huge Krafwerk fan which is perhaps too "pop" for fans of industrial. Ragardless, I recommend that any fan of electronic music get their live DVD, "Minimum Maximum". It's in DTS 5.1 and it is so clean, clear, and crisp sounding! They do an excellent job separating the sounds and incorporating the surround speakers without going overboard. The two newer guys in the band actually did the mix. Not only does it sound good, it's an entertaining DVD, and gives you an idea of what they are like live. Unfortunately, it still doesn't quite replicated seeing them in person.

Speaking of Skinny Puppy, I saw part of a concert on DVD. Ogre is crazy on stage...what a mess he is at the end!
Posted By: DOUBTINGTHOMAS29 Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/14/06 05:15 AM
INANE/sonicfox, do you listen to bands like Felix da Housecat, Ladytron or Fischerspooner? I listen to all sorts of different types of electronic music. I love old 80's synthpop (DM, New Order, Dead or Alive, Duran Duran etc..) and I also like bands like Autechre, Download, Plaid and many other artists on the Warp Records label.

sonicfox, Skinny Puppy opened their tour here in Portland which was really cool. You mentioned Ogre looks a mess on stage. Personally, I'm surprised he's still alive after all the junk he put in his body. Glad to see him clean (and kinda sober).
Posted By: sonicfox Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/14/06 04:19 PM
Hi DOUBTINGTHOMAS29! I'm not familiar with Felix da Housecat, but I've got one Ladytron cd, 'Light & Magic'. I've only listened to bits of Fischerspooner and found them a bit dull. Maybe I need to give it another listen. What album do you reccomend from them? And yes, I love 80's synthpop as well as well as the other bands you mentioned. I also like industrial bands from around that time like A Split Second, Cabaret Voltaire, and Nitzer Ebb.
Posted By: Gkarf Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/14/06 07:36 PM
Anybody know, does 70's musicians Triumvirat and Rick Wakeman fit this description of music? Spartacus and Journey to the Center of the Earth are 2 all time favorites. Guy
Posted By: MarkSJohnson Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/14/06 09:43 PM
I used to LOVE Journey to the Center of the Earth! I don't think it fits this genre though!
Posted By: Zarak Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/15/06 12:40 AM
Nitzer Ebb...all I remember from them is a song (don't know the title) but it goes something like:

Guns, Guns, Guns Guns
Gold, Gold, Gold, Gold
Fire, Fire, Fire, Fire
Muscle and Hate, Muscle and Hate

And so on, repeating different things. I'm sure I could find the title online, but someone probably knows what I am refering to.
Posted By: sonicfox Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/15/06 01:34 AM
Oh, yes...'Join in the Chant' from the album, "That Total Age".
Posted By: sonicfox Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/15/06 01:39 AM
I would say that those albums fit in more along the lines of progressive rock, maybe?
Posted By: INANE Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/15/06 05:00 AM
Some more really great bands mentioned here... I do like Kraftwerk actually (I see Yahoo Music has Minimum-Maximum so I'll have to check it out). I am a HUGE New Order fan, Duran Duran was my favorite band growing up in the 80's. I also like Depeche Mode quite a bit.

Some other cool more mellow bands I like:

Theivery Corp, De-Phazz, Groove Armada, Hooverphonic, Orb, Underworld, William Orbit.

More upbeat ones I love would be:

Paul Oakenfold, Armin Van Buuren, DJ Tiesto, PPK, Sascha, Fluke, Chemical Brothers, Crystal Method, Leftfield, Moby.

hmmm, maybe I should make a disk

Did anyone recieve their disc this week, or am I the only one? Thanks again Mary for taking the time to send these out to us. I got mine in the mail Thursday and popped it in the pc for a listen. I would have to say that I liked most of the material from the get go. The bonus disc took a few rounds to warm up to. But I really dig the disc with the 12 tracks on it.

Track 3 Squarepusher- Is probably my fav so far. This is the style that I like the most. I can't describe what it is, but like it. This one I crank up the volume and let er rip.

Track 5 Aphex Twin - This one wants to make me meditate in a thick cloud of stuff. Although only a couple minutes in length, it is a nice breakup from the wildy insane, tripped up track 4, which somehow carries a nice tune if you give it a chance.

Track 6 U-Ziq - I can't figure this one out. It seems as though the high frequencies are distorted? Washed out perhaps? Not sure. Maybe it sounds this way? The beats are pretty sweet though.

That's all for now. I won't comment on the rest yet. Have to give them more listening time. Btw I used my 750's for critical listening, not the pc.

What do you guys/gals use to rip your cd's? Windows media? EAC?

Posted By: sonicfox Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/18/06 03:15 AM
Hi Michael! I'm glad that you liked the disc! The Squarepusher and Ahpex Twin tracks are relatively mild sounding compared to a lot of their other stuff, but they remain my favorites from the bands. But Aphex Twin also puts out some really great ambient material as well.

The U-Ziq (or Mu-ziq as it's sometimes known) was probably not meant to sound distored at first, but I think it wasn't corrected on purpose because it kind of fits the song.

Oh, and the bonus track...you really have to have a lot of patience to listen to the whole thing. It's kind of like a soundtrack. I find it's a great song to sit back and listen to in the dark. What did you think about Goldfrapp? Alison's voice is gorgeous in my opinion. However, Goldfrapp's style since then has drastically changed. It's not as moody, but more electro-glam like. It's great stuff though! They've become one of my favorite bands.

Well, if everyone likes the disc enough, I may have to do a Vol.2! I've always enjoyed making music mixes for people, but most of them find the music too bizarre.

Oh, BTW...I use EAC (Exact Audio Copy) to rip tracks or entire cd and also to burn.
Posted By: INANE Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/18/06 09:56 PM
I use EAC and Nero when I'm lazy.
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/20/06 05:20 PM
Just got the disc today. Haven't listened yet, but the track listing looks great! Lot's of stuff I already know, and a good chunk I don't, but suspect I'll love!

Thanks!

Posted By: spiffnme Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/20/06 05:22 PM
Peter, fyi...the bonus disc track "The Box" is the same track I put on my first mix disc that you said felt unfinished. That's because the version I used was. I didn't think many people would appreciate a 28 min song. (Putting it on a bonus disc was a great idea!)

Posted By: sonicfox Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/20/06 05:41 PM
Aww, darn, spiff! If I had known you were already familiar with the stuff, I would have made a special one just for you! I put a lot of familiar bands and tracks (fan favorites) on the disc on purpose to introduce people to the genre. Maybe for you, I'll have to make another disc with something more obscure!

Very nice. Is that her natural voice hitting those high notes?

Posted By: sonicfox Re: Electronica disc is done... - 03/21/06 04:54 AM
Yes, it's totally her natural voice hitting those high notes! Obviously, her voice is triggering an effects processor to make it sound strange, but it's definitely her. When she sings it live, she uses a different mic for those parts.

If it's worth it to you to download them, I've uploaded a couple more fantastic songs, here. You have to wait 45 secs for the download and then close the popup (it covers the download link...sorry!). 'Utopia' is from the first album, "Felt Mountain", where you can hear her unaltered high voice in the style of opera! The second song, 'Ride A White Horse' is from the latest album, "Supernature". Here you can tell the difference in music style.

The disc just arrived about 8 minutes ago! (8 days to arrive)

Many thanks Mary. I'll post my thoughts after listening. Haven't heard of anybody except Kraftwerk so I'm looking forward to hearing something new.

Zarak... still interested in what's more an electronic rock than industrial CD?

Nitzer Ebb, Thrill Kill, Jesus & Mary Chain, Epoxies, new Blondie (her "new" dance club hit Good Boys), Talking Heads, Soviettes, Love and Rockets, Ministry, Sugar (all hail Bob Mould - ex-Husker Du), New Model Army, and a creepy one by the Harlots... and a secret campy bonus track.

If so, PM me your address.

Love and Rockets....now thats a band I havent heard for Eons. I still remember when Bauhaus split up to Peter Murphy and Love and Rockets. I remember in 89 when a small band NIN opened for Peter Murphy at Toronto and the audience went nuts for NIN and new wave and alternative was swinging to Industrial Alternative and grunge...where are those plaid shirts, army shorts and docs I use to own...ahh the fun ole days.
Body Count, Pantera, Stone Temple Pilots, Ministry, White Zombie, Faith No More,

wow..thats a change to what I listen today...
Tiesto, Andrea Bocelli, Buena Vista Social Club, Pavlo, Linkin Park(okey not too different with this)

Posted By: Zarak Re: Electronica disc is done... - 04/08/06 01:35 AM
I guess Bauhaus got back together...they are one of the opening bands on the next leg of the NIN tour.

DJ Teisto? Love him, saw he had a concert DVD (5.1?) at Best Buy... really curious if it's any good.
Posted By: Zarak Re: Electronica disc is done... - 04/10/06 04:22 PM
Made it through the first 9 songs or so...I like Ascend the best so far. I saw Nitzer Ebb is coming out with a new greatest hits type album in May and is going to be doing some touring as well.

Alright...I've got a new favorite Bren. That bonus track was Unbelievable!
Posted By: BrenR Re: Electronica disc is done... - 04/11/06 06:00 AM
In reply to:

Since no one else is waiting for this disc... the bonus track WAS "Unbelievable"... by EMF.

Yes, I own the CD... it's actually adjusting the camber on one of my home office speakers (an equally useless Iomega Zip disc is under the other) I bought it for $1 brand-new at a sidewalk sale. Had a bit of history for me as the only song that my first high school garage band could agree on covering.

Drummer : "Doors, man... Riders on the Storm!"
Guitarist : "No way, guys... Slaughter... Fly To the Angels!"
Me : "Holiday In Cambodia... Dead Kennedys"

The only other song we could agree on was the Divinyls' "I Touch Myself"... but in a cramped and sweaty garage that seemed wrong. So wrong.
