Hi there, it's my first post and I'm new to the home theater world. I already have an Harman Kardon AVR 240, 50watts per channel in 5.1 . I'm planning to buy 2 floorstanding speakers like the M80v2, Max Amp Power:400 Watts Min Amp Power:10 Watts. Does my Receiver has enough power to make these speakers play well? Will I see a difference between and the m2v2? I'm I limited by the wattage of my receiver? Thanks for your answers ( hope you understand, I speak french)

Welcome!

A difference between the M80s and the M2s? Nah... there's only a 10 driver difference between the two.
Sorry, shouldn't be mean to the new people...(bad Ken, bad Ken!)

In any case, I'm not sure if many people are using H/K 240s with the M80s, but Alan reports good results with an H/K 525 and M80s. The wattage on the receiver will affect how loudly you can play the 80s, but they do have high sensitivity, which means that they can play loudly with little wattage input. In short, I'm not sure. I'd probably edge towards the M60s.

Most Harman receivers will have no troubles with the 4 ohm M80s. Even though the receiver states 50 watts pre channel, that is with an 8 ohm speaker. The M80s will pull more current from the receiver thus making it more like a 75 to 80 watt receiver.

Hi Ragnarok,
I'm running M60s with a 55wpc HK and have no problem at all getting to play too loud in a 17'x21' (+ or -) room. The 80s are more efficient so I am sure you will be fine unless you have a very generous rom .

I've got M60's driven by a H/K 135 (40Wx6) and it does a superb job. As for M80s powered by the H/K240, well, I don't know for certain but I think that you would be ok. Best give Axiom a call and then let us know what they say.

Cheers,

Hi Ragnarok,

Your English is a lot better than my French . As to your question, your H/K will certainly drive the M80s to reasonably loud levels but all this kinda depends on how big a room you'll be putting the M80s in, how far back you'll sit from them, and personal taste in terms of very high playback volume.

The M80s will play very cleanly and very loud in big rooms (6,000 cu ft) when you use a separate power amplifier of 200 to 350 watts per channel--so loud that I have to wear earplugs when one of my Axiom colleagues does the above, where peak levels are well above 100 dB SPL at a listening distance of 22 feet.

In an average room of 2200 cu. ft (19 x 13 x 9.5 ft; my living room), sitting 10 to 12 ft away, the M80s will certainly produce clean peak levels of 96 to 100 dB SPL, as measured on my trusty Radio Shack Sound Level Meter (analog) with an amplifier rated at 60 to 70 watts per channel, both channels driven, from 20 Hz to 20 kHz.

That is as loud as I ever listen, and corresponds very closely with the peak levels I've measured sitting as close as fifth row orchestra section for full orchestra and chorus in Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Opera.

But if you're into rock 'n' roll at extremely loud levels, you should think about a separate power amp for the main left and right channels--the M80s.

Regards,

My French is limited to:

-Est-ce que je peut aller a la toilette? (May I go to the bathroom)
-Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir? (Everyone knows this one)
et
-Il y a un requin dans mes souliers (There is a shark in my shoes)

Yes, I use that last one if anyone ever says "ooh, ooh... you're Canadian, say something French"
