I was going through the calibration on my Yamaha RX-V1500 last night and wasn't sure how to set the center. I would like to know if forum users set their VP150 centers to small or large (full range)?

Hello Larry,

Set your VP150 center to "Small." Deep bass below 80 Hz (that's the best default crossover frequency to set in your Yamaha) should be routed to your subwoofer, which is much better equipped to handle it than the VP150. The 150 has good bass output down to 90 Hz or so, but rolls off below that frequency, so by setting the VP150 to Small and using an 80-Hz crossover in your receiver, you'll achieve a smooth transition between the center and the subwoofer.

If you have left and right main channels that are floor-standing, you can try setting them to either Large or Small and deciding which yields the most balanced sound quality. Be sure you set the subwoofer to ON in the receiver set-up process.

Regards,

Yes the reason for recalibrating was that the sub had gotten turned off, it's sort of a wimpy little JBL E250P. I was also wondering whether to allow LFE for both the sub and the M80s or just the sub?

So, you recommend crossover at 80HZ? Does that apply when I someday get my EP600 as well?

Larry,

You can try sending the bass to the M80s (Large) plus the subwoofer if you wish (it's sometimes called "double bass"). If you get too much bass (I do in my setup) with that setting, then set the M80s to Small and experiment with the crossover frequency. Try 60 Hz and even 40 Hz for the M80s and listen to the bass balance.

These rules aren't carved in stone, and depending on your room, personal preferences and speaker locations, feel free to vary the settings until you get the best overall balance.

This advice would also apply if you get the EP600.

Since sounds below 90 hz sent to the vp150 start to 'roll off', would 90 hz be a better setting?
Or does an 80 hz setting pretty much let the sub pick up right where the vp150 left off?

there is a gradual slope, it does not just cutoff at 80hz.
