I just received a software update disc from Toshiba for my HD player. Why would a company spend time and resources for a supposedly dead technology? I had heard rumors of an HD-DVD resurgence, but you know how the internet is...

Anyone have more/any info?

No, but I bet CV ...

Oh, wait, wrong thread. ;\)

No, but I hope my player lives a while, cuz I've got Planet Earth on HD-DVD, as well as another title or two. Luckily, most of my (small amount of) HD disc stuff is Blu-ray, but I'm glad I didn't spring for those Star Trek remastered sets on what is now an extinct format.

I also heard rumors (was it here?) that Toshiba may still be angling to stab at Sony with some kind of Blu-ray v2.0 that they hope will give them the upper hand. I have heard some talk from the Sony camp, in apparent retaliation, of Blu-ray being a "finished format" or something like that.

It's never over!

Toshiba is talking about a new HD format that is compatible with existing DVD technology.

Ah for the good old days when the telco owned your phone and it only needed replacing every 15 years or so. ;\)

The "new format" could a resurrection of DVDx3, which was essentially using VC-1 instead of MPEG2 and allowing 720p HD content without changes to the disk structure. They may have had some other ideas in between.

Fry's has all HD-DVD titles for $9.99 now, and are even selling the HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox-360 for $39! I just picked up 6 movies yesterday and may buy some more.

Dead or not, I already have the player, so why not buy some titles for cheap? They must have had about 150 titles in the store here.

Grrr. Fry's ships to Canada but won't ship HD-DVDs to Canada.

I understand protecting some electronic technologies and software but useless Hollywood drivel? C'mon.....

Bad enough the US Gov. blocks Pandora and other Internet Radio Content. What are they afraid will happen?

If it's so useless then why do you want it? ;\)
