Hello everyone!

I haven't been on the axiom forums in a long, long, long time.

I had a quick question, what is the difference between the original Millennia version 1 speakers and the version 2 speakers that are out currently?

I'm curious about all the speaker lines, but more specifically for the QS series. I am looking to replace my current surround sound due to placement issues with the QS series. Current speakers are too localizable and I had the original QS4's a couple years ago and was wondering what the difference is now.

Any info I can get would be fantastic! Thanks!

Hello Aetherhole,

If the surround sound is "too localizable" with your current QS4s, then you are running your surrounds too loud or they are not located properly. How do you have them mounted and where?

There have been gradual upgrades to many of Axiom's speakers over the years. Sometimes those are simply mechanical (better quality binding posts, improved grille cloth frames and the like); other times there have been changes to crossovers and driver arrays.

The QS4s or QS8s have not fundamentally changed, except that the QS4 v2 uses the same titanium tweeter as the QS8s and other Axiom speakers. The old QS4 used a smaller diameter tweeter.

Regards,

The difference on the QS4s is pretty pronounced, assuming you had the original original version. The v2 designation basically denotes an accumulation of changes over a few years; in crossovers, mainly, but some cabinet design and driver changes. The QS4s have had their tweeters replaced with ones that match the rest of the line--do you remember if yours had 3 screws in the face or 4? 4 is the new one.

I am a little confused on what you are saying. I take it you are using different surround speakers currently and are having localization problems with them and that you previously owned the QS4 v1 and are wondering if the QS4 v2 are worth upgrading over your current surrounds.

If this is correct what are you currently using for surround duty?
Wow, I typed in a hurry, didn't I?

Let me clarify a bit. Actually I no longer own the QS4's I originally had. I got my QS4's about 4-5 years ago and if I remember correctly, they did have the titanium tweeters. I am currently using Rocket RSS300's but, I am upgrading my mains to a different AV123 speaker line and the QS series would be a better fit for my surround duty than the RSS300's are to the speakers I am upgrading to. My current RSS300's are a little bit more localizable and my rear surrounds are actually their RS450 towers so they are a lot more localizable than the QS series.

Thanks for all the info, though! I am looking at upgrading once I sell my RSS300's and my RS450's off.
Just a guess, are you getting into Reference line? I have heard they are closer to the Axiom sound, IIRC many on av123 call them bright like Axiom.
Actually, the LS series. They're not "bright" like the Reference series. Though, they are not "laid-back" like some would call the Rockets.

I'm getting the LS-9's soon and to match the very big, open sound, I am looking for surrounds that can match up better with the large sound, like I know the QS series will.
OOooooo, those are very impressive looking speakers, a line from Shrek comes to mind, ;\)

Please let us know what you think of the LS's and the combination. A couple of pics would be good too. \:\)

Hi again,

I misunderstood you. To further clarify, yes, the old QS4s used a titanium tweeter, but only 3/4-inch diameter. We upgraded the tweeter on the V2 version to a 1-inch diameter titanium unit with better high-power handling. The tweeters now used on the QS4s are identical to the tweeters used throughout the Axiom speaker line--the same as the M80, M60, M22, QS8s, etc.

The QS4's woofers are slightly smaller than the QS8's, so they don't have quite as high power handling as the QS8s.

Regards,
Alan
Jakewash, yeah once I get them I'll post pictures and impressions, too!

Thanks again for the information! I've always found the Axiom boards so informative, even though I wasn't a regular poster or sometime even an owner of the products!

Thanks again guys!
