This might not mean much to anyone else, and or you have already done this. I have not been happy with the fact that commercials have always come several db's higher than the progrms that one might happen to be watching. I believe that certain receivers come equipped with a so-called sound leveler, but I am not ready to but a knew one since I just got one. My new plasma has this capability as did my old crt. Since not caring to much about audio that comes over the air (dvd more important)I ran HDMI to plasma instead of receiver (which I believe gives a better picture anyway). I then ran optical out from tv to receiver, I now have no more fluctuations. I still get choice of tv speakers or receiver. The downside would be that I believe that the audio in general is lower somewhat, but as I said I am not that concerned with what comes over the air, and I can live with it.

Oh yeah, if Dean reads this or if any other Jarheads out there

Companies mix commercials "hot" on purpose and it makes them even more annoying than usual like Apple. It is actually a turnoff for me for the actual product they are showing because of that. It is something I have to deal with constantly while watching tv (always have the controller ready).

I have also noticed the actual programming from station to station can have significant swings in the db level.

I believe that the optical out from your TV will only give you stereo not 5.1, when using HDMI into TV. Only when using OTA tuner in TV will opt out provide digital 5.1.

You may be correct, although I do believe that I have had all 5+1 at one point or another

Its easy enough to check. Your AVR should tell you what type of signal is being inputted.

Actually, my SA8300 and 8300HD outputs dolby 5.1 via optical. I'm on Time Warner Cable in New York.

Yes most STB's output DD5.1 via their digital coax/opt ports.
As far as I know, the opt output port on TV's only output DD5.1 when you use the TV's built in atsc tuner and ota ant input. Otherwise it just outputs stereo.
