I have tinkered in the past with building superchunks, but I am having trouble building a frame to use for the mineral wool. So since I am completely stupid, I was wondering if anyone has seen the gik elite pillar bass trap. It looks nice, but expensive. The thing that bugs me is that there isn't any info of the product anywhere to be seen. There are no dimentions height, weight, or how well it performs anywhere. It completely baffles me to see a company not give specs for their products. Has anyone seen one or used it. I wonder how effective they are? I also like the looks of the tri trap. Anyone use these?

Ok. I think I figured out a way to make these things. So I am going to try it. I'm gonna make them 4ft high using a frame of made from 1 inch dow rods with a shelf at two feet. I am going to use the mineral wool. Hopefully this will look decent and do a good job. We'll see.

I have the GIK tri traps. They work pretty well and look OK from a distance but I must say that I was not blown away by the craftsmanship in these. They put black plastic triangles on the top and bottom of the traps to cover the material and it could certainly look more professional. Good luck making your own traps. You will probably be glad that you did.

Corner traps? I put these together a few months ago.... There's a lot of good information in the whole thread. http://www.axiomaudio.com/boards/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=248931&fpart=2

let me know how the dowel trick turns out. I took a 2x4 and ripped it down to 2x2 and split it in half diagonally to use as uprights in the 3 corners and attached them to the top and bottom. The super chunks I made were 24" across the front and 17" on the other 2 sides. When I put it together those uprights were way to flimsy. I had them 45" tall as that's all the wider fabric they had at the local store that was breathable. Also what size dowels are you going to use? I was thinking about that as well otherwise maybe using the wood rods they hang clothes on but that might be overkill.

My plan is to use 1 inch dowel rods. Planning on drilling holes in my 1inch thick boards. I am going to put shelves every two feet. For space concerns I can't have my chunks wider than one foot. I have
my boys birthday to put together tommorw so it will take me a little time to do this. I'll let you know how it goes when I get a chance to do it.

Well, I have almost finished my bass trap towers. I have learned a lot so far about construction. Anyway, I was going to make them triangular and put them in the corner and have them go almost to the ceiling, but since I had to limit my sides to 12 inches I felt that would tip over easily so I decided to make them 1 foot square and 4ft tall. I began by cutting 1 inch x 12 inch x 48 inch plywood into 1 ft squares. We then drilled out 1 inch holes centered 1 inch from the corners. I made a top and bottom with a shelf at two ft. I found it was important to drill all the holes through all boards at the same time to prevent it from getting out of line. After I finished that I cut the mineral wool into 1ft squares and stuffed them into the towers. The corners got scrunched because the dowel rods were in the way. After this was completed I had to figure out how to attach the material to the towers. This was difficult and my first attempt just looked horrid. Since I had square corners only in 3 different levels of the tower making the material tight was a problem and it is wasn't nice and square. It just looked like my son built it and he is only 1 year old. I decided I had to make the corners square and hide the staples so back to lowes. I then bought corner pieces that I could attach onto each side to make my sides square, some flat molding to make my edges even, and some decorative molding to hide my staples after I stretch and attach the material. Overall I have learned how to do this. This design worked, but after building it this way I think I would have been better off just building a 3 teir shelf and stuffing it, then wrapping it with the material. I spent WAY to much money because I changed my design after buying materials. Anyway, I think when all is said and done these will look nice and are very sturdy with the one inch dowels and the outer corner piece sides holding it together. It is solid and will work well, but I don't think I will build my next one this way. If I can figure out how to post some pics I will after it is done.

I look forward to seeing what you've made. I'm going to have to experiment with room treatments once my system is in the basement.

Well almost completed with one. I tell ya. Figuring out your design WHILE you build is difficult, but when you really have no idea what you are doing I guess you learn as you go. Anyway, I think they are going to look pretty good after all. I am trying to put a few pics of them up but I don't know how.

As you can see I had to add the corner pieces to get a nice edge around for the material that I have put around it. Then I am putting molding over the areas where the tacks are. I will post finished pics of one hopefully tommorow. It will look much better than what you see in those pics.

Looks good! But what do you do when they are full with all the bass they have trapped? Is there some kind of compartement you can take out and free the bass? ;\)

A question, out of curiousity: Batts of insulation(in a home) only work when layed down in the "flat" direction, this ensures that it traps air pockets within itself and blocks out either heat or cold on it's surface. Now if you turn that batt and use it sideways, it will not insulate the cold or hot out because the layers or pockets are exposed on the sides and will actually conduct the temperature through itself. So I'm wondering if the way you lay your material down in a bass trap has any influence on the way it works, flat vs sideways.
