Hi everyone am thiniking of getting a new AV am thinking Denon 3808CI or the new 4310CI on the ecom electronics web site the 3808 is only $1050 anyone heard of this site before? Not sure if the 4310 is worth another $1000.

So you've confirmed that your Sherwood is the problem? I haven't heard of the site you mention.

Well the sherwood has a couple of known problems. The stand bye mode has quit working completely. And the two subwoofer modes normal and sub plus only the syub plus works. On normal the sub doesnt work at all. Is it the cause of everything? I dont know. Is something wrong with the Sherwood? Yes. Avs I am looking at Denon AVR 3808 and 4310 and the Onkyo Tx-NR906

You need to purchased from an authorized etailer, the list can be found on Denons website. I purchased from 6ave a few months back for about $1K, they may be cheaper now.

I also bought my 3808 from 6ave... Paid about $1100 back in nov 07

I went to 6ave and they didnt have any more new 3808s only one opened. So now I am looking at the Denon 4310CI I think that is the newer version.

1. What do you mean when you say the standby mode isn't working?
Is the power button on the front panel of the receiver in the detent position? Does the power light switch between blue and amber when you use the remote?

2. As far as the subwoofer modes not working, that seemed to only occur when sourcing from the OPPO. You have been given suggestions that your set-up in the OPPO may be wrong and you have not responded to any of them. I just looked at the OPPO manual on line and the audio set-up section is very complex and can easlily be done wrong.

3. The Denon receivers that you are looking at are more complex than the Sherwood that you already have; so you may just be digging a deeper hole if you don't find out what is wrong first. You would get lot's of help if you would respond to suggestions already offered.

The power light quit going to amber last week it stays blue now even in standbye which it used to go to amber. On the subwoofer modes the normal mode doesnt work with any device except television not just the oppo so I am pretty sure its not the oppo settings which I have went over many times. I have plugged in my computer and my old dvd player and the normal mode doesnt work on any of them either. If I bought a denon I would pay for the store to configure it for me(since I wouldnt know anything about the denon right away)and they could show me how to operate it. They say the audessey works pretty could except it turn s the sub down a bit. As far has how complex it is I have learned a lot since day one I know that sherwood backwards and forwards now. Plus I even watched the Avia theater DVD and I have a sound meter now for the channel levels. I admit this stuff took alot of my time to learn but once you know what your doing its not so bad. Plus this forum has helped too when I didnt know squat about any of this. Thanks you guys.

Guy, I would take your Sherwood in to have it checked out before you buy a new AVR, or have someone take it in for you. At least be sure there's a problem with it before you spend more on another receiver. You mentioned before that it is only a few months old, so it's got to be under warranty, they'd either fix it or replace it with a new unit.

Still sounds like a setting to me if ANY of your inputs are providing bass....

Ya I thought it was the settings too but I have the oppo set up just like one of the forum members suggested on one of my other threads. He has an oppo bdp-83 as well but I tried every setting the thing has to offer just to see with no luck. Once I try another amp I will know for sure. I am trying to get my local store to bring over a demo amp.

I still dont know if I am going to keep the EP500 yet the store is suppose to bring over a EPOS ELS3 sub for me to listen too as well as a demo amp (finally got them on the phone). Anyone heard of epos before?

Thanks for the response. Please check the power switch on the front panel of your Sherwood receiver and make sure it is in the detent position. According to the manual the front panel power switch must be in detent position for standby mode to work.

Also if normal mode works from any source it means your crossover function is working. But all movie suorces in DD or DTS must include an LFE track where most of the bass is.

You say you have "plugged in your old DVD player and the normal mode didn't work." Thanks for telling us that. It's helpful to know that information. What type cable did you use to plug it in? HDMI, optical, coaxial, RCA?

I use HDMI for everything. Of coarse the power button is in the detent postion for the standbye to work I know this but thanks.

OK we will assume there is something wrong with standby mode. That doesn't mean the subwoofer problem is a receiver failure.

From page 35 of your receiver manual.
"2CH downmix mode
• This mode allows the multi-channel signals encoded in DTS or Dolby Digital format, etc. to be mixed down into
2 front channels and to be reproduced through only two front speakers or through headphones.
• When the SPEAKER button is set to off to listen with headphones, if the STEREO button is pressed while
playing the multi-channel digital signals from DTS or Dolby Digital sources, etc., it will enter the 2CH downmix
mode automatically.
• To cancel the 2CH downmix mode, select the Dolby Headphone mode with using the MULTI CONTROL knob
on the front panel or the SURROUND MODE UP/DOWN ( >/< ) buttons on the remote control."

You might double check that you don't have 2 channel downmix mode selected.

I was reading from your OPPO manual section Audio Format Setup and noticed the following warning note:

"NOTE
If you use HDMI to connect audio to an HDMI A/V receiver or audio processor, it is important
that you choose 720p or higher HDMI output resolution when playing high resolution audio
content (DVD-Audio, SACD, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio). According to the
HDMI specification, the bandwidth available for audio is proportional to the total bandwidth
used by video. At 480p/576p resolution, the HDMI specification can only support 2 channels
of audio with high sample rate (up to 192kHz), or 8 channels of audio with standard sample
S E T U P M E N U O P T I O N S
57
rate (up to 48kHz). If you play high resolution audio content at the 480p/576p resolution, you
may get reduced audio resolution, incomplete audio channels, or even no audio/video output
at all. Choosing a higher output resolution such as 720p or above allows enough bandwidth
for all high sample rate audio channels."

Hopefully you set a video output rate of 720P or above using the easy setup on the OPPO? If you set 480i you would only get two channel output with no LFE track. Just a shot in the dark.

Maybe you can hire someone to come out and calibrate/setup your system.

Thanks everyone but so far I have tried everything that has been mentioned. And to the guy who suggested I make sure the power button is depresseed for standbye to work cmon now give me some credit I am not a FEMALE LOL but thanks. Its stange standbye mode started working today again. And I relize that just because the sherwood has a few known defects doesnt mean it is causing everything. And I did finally get my local stereo shoppe on the phone and they are suppose to bring another amp and a Epos ELS3 powered sub for me to listen too. They charge $75/hour but I am going to have them saet up my system and finally I will know for sure if the sub or amp have any real problems.

let us know what they find out. Good luck!

33guy, I don't remember that you ever mentioned hooking the audio into your receiver any other way than HDMI. If you haven't hooked it up any other way you could easily have the OPPO set up wrong. I have two questions on the OPPO easy setup:

1. What resolution do you have the video set at?
2. Do you have the subwoofer setting at Normal or advanced?
