Im considering upgrading from an entry level receiver to 5 IRD monoblocks, but not too sure if its better to go with a preamp+processor combo, or should I go for seperate units. Does anyone have any good suggestions on preamps and processors to use with these monoblocks that are reasonable in price. I was looking at Rotel, but you guys may know of some better prices on equipment that is compareable in quality. General I will be using my system for both music and HT. Music wise I generally use mp3's, so the processor needs to be able to support this audio formats. I was orignally thinking of getting the Denon 4803, but think going with monoblocks would be a better choice. (Easier to upgrade) in the future if needed.

What's your price range? I have the Rotel 1066, and have really enjoyed it. From what I've read, it's the best processor available in it's price range. There are better, but you'll pay a lot more. You can find the 1066 used for about $1100. I got mine for that price and it was only about 6 months old.

The RMB1066 is a powered amp is it not? If I'm going to run 5 IRD monoblock amps, do I need another amp? I think if I'm running the 4 monoblocks, I need to be looking at a preamp and a processor.

I was speaking of the RSP-1066. It's a processor only. You'd need separate amps to go with it.

May I ask where you found a used one? Was there a website that you knew of?

Occasionally the Rotel RSP-1066 shows up on Ebay. You can usually find one on www.audiogon.com as well. They sell nearly as soon as they are posted. You you're persistent, you should be able to find one. There are a few things to ask before purchasing though. The earlier models video was not HDTV compatible, and there have been several firm ware upgrades since the model was introduced. Ask the seller for the serial number, and you get call or email Rotel and they can tell you if it's got the latest video. The seller can also tell you which firmware version it has. (If they don't know, tell them to press and hold the mute button. The firmware version will then scroll across the screen.)

For Rotel questions you should check out "Club Rotel". Here's a link:
