As you all know I have suggested some folks looking for a sub and on a budget to take a look at the eD line of subs. After someone had made a comment on how bad the finished looked in pics he had seen I decided to give one a shot myself. Here I was recommending them with out ever hearing one myself.

I received the A3-300 ($550 shipped on sale) this past week with almost a months wait after ordering. It was no big deal as I still have my Hsu STF-3 on hand.

The first thing I did after set up and calibrating it was to play a bit of music. One disc in particular that impressed me with some fairly deep bass was NickelBacks "All The Right Reasons". On track two of that disc there is some pretty good bass notes. Now I'm pretty familiar with this song when the Hsu is in the mix. When the eD played this track there was no doubt it went lower and hit with more authority than my beloved Hsu did.

Yes fellows it was in the same exact spot that the other sub had been. Didn't want one to have any advantages over the other.

Just a couple weeks back I rented the movie 9. The first time I watched this movie it was with the Hsu in the mix. The movies sound track was very impressive with all the loud and low bass notes that shook the couch. The Hsu did a really good job with everything that the movie threw at it.

Of course when I got the eD I had to check out this movie again. I tell ya guys it was like watching it all over again. There were times I was like holy **** this things going to blow up or self destruct with what was coming out of it. I can't say I was quite prepared for what the eD did with this movie.

While the Hsu and eD seem to be pretty equal with most music, both with deep tight bass, the eD set itself apart with movies.

I'm sure this isn't the end all be all of subs; that's a given but for the money it is a hell of a deal.

Those were my few words on the eD fellows.

For anyone that missed the pics.

Here it is next to the Hsu

In it's place.

Very nice wid.

Interesting, Rick. Did you calibrate the eD to the same level as the Hsu to compensate for a possible difference in sensitivity?
Posted By: Wid Re: eD A3-300 - 02/07/10 03:53 AM
Yes I did John, both were set at 78DB.

Your dog looks up to no good back there. ;\)

It's a statue, he guards my Rotel amp \:\)

That's great to hear about the eD. I may end up with one for my computer setup.

I have heard nothing but good things about eD subs, glad to hear your experience was no different \:\)

Is eD "Elemental Designs"? Or another brand altogether?
Posted By: CV Re: eD A3-300 - 02/07/10 04:52 AM
You've got it right.

Ok, cool.

sweet, thanks for the review.

This REALLY makes me wonder what their biggest baddest sub sounds like

I know it was the top dog on Craigsubs list.

Cool stuff! Thanks for the not-a-review!

Very nice, Rick! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the eD sub. It sounds like an incredible little performer. It's always good to have even more affordable HT solutions.

Thanks for the "review" Rick...even if you'll claim it wasn't!

PM sent....

Rick, I'm glad you like your eD sub.... As you know I am only 30 min. drive from eD here in Iowa. One of these days I need to drive over there. Actually, they are more known for car audio products, but jumped into HT stuff a few years back...

They do have some killer looking sub options, at affordable prices... my only problem is I would have to sell some of my Axiom subs to give them a chance. \:\(

Nice indeedy Rick ... I'm glad to see that you got the grill in also!
Posted By: Wid Re: eD A3-300 - 02/07/10 02:13 PM

I knew they were pretty well known for car audio. A few years back when I was looking to build a system for my truck I saw the eD name around quite a bit.

I just wish I would have considered them back when I was considering whether to get a Axiom sub, or other mfg... what could be, I may never now... ;(

You never will know Randy. When I was talking to them they said they give tours, just call in advance.
Posted By: RickF Re: eD A3-300 - 02/07/10 02:24 PM
That 395# A7-900 is a beast ... I'm not so sure the house foundation would hold up to that thing and then the LFE's it produces would probably finish off the rest of the house.

Nice to hear the ED sub is working out well for you! Do you have plans on integrating the Hsu into the mix as well?
Posted By: Wid Re: eD A3-300 - 02/07/10 07:13 PM

No, I plan on selling it.
Posted By: Micah Re: eD A3-300 - 02/07/10 08:18 PM
Have you tried running both subs in different locations to see how much smoother the bass response is?
Posted By: Wid Re: eD A3-300 - 02/07/10 08:20 PM

Can't say I have. In the room they're in (the living room) placement is pretty limited.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to do the review, Rick!
Posted By: davidsch Re: eD A3-300 - 02/08/10 12:13 PM
Thanks for the review, Rick. I will keep that in mind if I ever decide to get a second sub. Is $550 the normal price or was there a sale going on?
Posted By: DaveG Re: eD A3-300 - 02/08/10 12:25 PM
Thanks for the review.
Posted By: Wid Re: eD A3-300 - 02/08/10 03:10 PM

That was the sale price, they are normally $600 with shipping included.
Posted By: CV Re: eD A3-300 - 02/21/10 07:46 AM
Rick, what made you go with that model over any of their others? They have so many within the span of a couple hundred dollars, and the specs seem so similar, too. I'm thinking of getting one for my sister and brother-in-law, but it's hard to know what model to get.
Posted By: Wid Re: eD A3-300 - 02/21/10 03:25 PM

It fit what I had to spend and the size was close to the Hsu STF-3. I was also looking at the A5-300 but when I called and talked to Alex he suggested the 300 for my room size and budget.

I quite the sub for what it cost. Give them a call Charles.
Posted By: St_PatGuy Re: eD A3-300 - 02/21/10 03:48 PM
I keep looking at the weight on some of the eD subs and my back starts hurting just thinking about lugging it around the room. Definitely have to employ the drag-on-a-rug maneuver.

Getting it up the stairs would be another problem.

It's nice to have so many sub options available out there!
Posted By: davew Re: eD A3-300 - 02/21/10 07:16 PM
When I ordered my sub (130 lbs), I also ordered these carpet slides so I could try out different locations in the room. They work great.

But I had my son come over to help me move it out of the car and up the stairs.

Those look pretty handy.
Posted By: Ken.C Re: eD A3-300 - 02/21/10 08:52 PM
Ah, we just got some big furniture sliders (like 4 inch circles) from Home Depot when we were moving stuff around in preparation for painting.
Posted By: davew Re: eD A3-300 - 02/21/10 09:34 PM
I already had the 4" round sliders from home depot but the bigger EZMove Pros are so much better and handle the really heavy stuff very well. It was worth the upgrade for me.

Good to know.

If you are on carpet, just roll the sub onto it's side for moving and then roll it back over onto the feet when in position. My 150lb PB13 gets this treat from time to time, it is just big enough to be too awkward to carry easily.
