Hi everyone. Just got the ff: M22Ti fronts, VP150 center & 3 M2i rears. Need advice on best placement:

1. M22Ti - How high should I position them relative to ear level at viewing/listening position and relative to the TV screen (JVC AV-48WP30).

2. M2i - I will wall mount these about 4-5 ft behind viewing/listening position. How high should I place them?

And while we're at it, can anyone tell me where eye level should be relative to the tv screen for optimal viewing?

Appreciate any feedback. Cheers!

I can't answer all of those questions, but I do know that you want the tweeters of the M22 and VP150 as close to ear level as possible in your listening/viewing position.

Sounds like you got yourself some nice gear! Enjoy!

Reb, 1. is pretty clear: if possible, have the tweeters at or just below ear level. Raising the M22s about 16"-18" is about right, and also puts them about at the middle of the TV screen, although this isn't critical. The VP150(if it's going to be on top of the JVC)might be tilted slightly forward so that the tweeters point right at your ear level.

You haven't described your room and 2. isn't clear to me. You appear to imply that all 3 surrounds will be mounted behind you on the back wall. The 2 side surrounds should give you a side surround effect and the back surround a back surround effect. If for some reason it's not possible to mount or at least aim the sides to the side walls, then they should be separated as widely as possible, to give a bit of a "side" influence to the sound pattern. Height can be about 6 feet.

Again, not critical, but normal seating height puts your eyes roughly level with the middle of the screen on your 4' set.

Thanks for the reply, John. Allow me a few follow-up questions. On the rears, you're right in that I will mount them on the rear wall. When you say 6' high, what is that relative to ear level in the listening position? Do I measure it from the speakers' center? And since I'm using the M2's, should I point them in and down towards the listening position or just straight out? Thanks very much in advance.

Hi,

Point them straight out, firing across the room towards each other, except for the center rear, which should fire towards the front of the room. And the height of the side surrounds is relative to your ear level when you are seated. Depending on the surround speakers dispersion traits, I find anywhere from 18 inches to 5 feeet above ear level may work well. It's less critical with multipolar surrounds than with direct-radiating surrounds in my experience.

Regards,

Reb, not knowing your room dimensions and what side wall situation or other factor is leading you to put the side surrounds instead on the back wall, I wouldn't even suggest an orientation for the outer M2s. The general idea is to have, as much as possible, a complete circle of sound: from the front, sides and back.
