I hope more of these start coming out. I'd think Logitech would make a Harmony-branded tablet remote.

Touch Squid Remote Tablet

I'd also use it as a music streamer around the house, instead of buying a Squeezebox Touch.

I just want an affordable network to IR device + software that I can run on my existing Android phones/tablets.

Affordable = around $100

Agreed. It shouldn't be proprietary.
Nothing should be proprietary anymore. A smartphone should now do Anything.

To be a truly effective universal remote, it has to have more capability than a normal Android device. I'm still for having an Android-based tablet remote over just an Android device used as a remote without all of the necessary features.

What I want is software for my Android device that can do what the MyMovies app does on my HTPC, but for all my HT equipment (ie IR)

I too have been waiting for a universal remote for Android for some time. A while back there was a Harmony One app available on the market, but all it controlled was Google TV.

Logitech has a remote in the market for SqueezeBox, but nothing to control your TV, Cable box and all of that good stuff.

I do have Unified Remote that controls my computer, that's pretty cool. But the day they come out with a remote just like a Harmony One will be the shiznit!

Only thing is, they probably aren't in any hurry to bring that out since they sell the Harmony One for like $100 bucks and they know nobody will want to pay anywhere close to that on the Android market.

I've been fiddling with Red Eye Mini for iPad. I'm not "there" yet, but it is pretty darn cool. Not sure about the value proposition if you need to step up to the network units. I see that they have an Android app now.

I remember seeing RedEye around, but I never looked that far into it. If you ever have time, you should detail exactly what you're doing with it and list your pros and cons. I know, I know, I rarely do anything that helpful here when I get new toys.

I was also thinking it would be cool if the tablet remote I'm dreaming of also docked into a full keyboard with plenty of extra customizable buttons for the other functions. I would have that dock mounted to a tray at my primary home theater seat. Then I could have the real buttons most of the time, then use the less satisfying touchscreen when I'm up and around doing other stuff.

Maybe Logitech should sell some sort of "kit" that combines a traditional remote for common functions with that touch and feel we all love. With an app for your Android or iOS device.
