Just got a Denon 1712 and ran setup. Audyssey set my M22 fronts at 40 crossover, my vp100 at 100 and my QS8's at 90. Should I leave these settings or change back to 80? If the answer is to change it, how do I do that ? I cant seem to find an option anywhere to edit these settings

Yes, you want to go into the Speaker Setup part of the receiver menu, and bump up the crossover on the m22's to 80hz.

I can't seem to find an independent setting. Under speaker setup there is a crossover setting but only one so I guess it's global. I have set it to 80 but the audyssey settings remain the same. There is speaker config but that is simply large or small or none. There is also a sub setting which confuses me, options are mode=LFE+Main or LFE and there is a crossover setting there that I have at 80. Is it because Dynamic EQ is on?

A lot of receivers in the past had a global crossover setting for all speakers, but modern receivers should have independent settings for each speakers. Maybe if it is a lower end model it does not. Anyway, you don't want to lower the crossover of a speaker as you will lose the correction done by Audyssey. So you may have to use 100, since that is the highest one reported. All speakers would be "small" since a crossover point is being used. Also LFE is what you want. The sub crossover should actually be at 100-120, which is really a low pass filter, you don't really crossover a sub.

If you rerun Audyssey, you may get different results. Make sure you take all locations, per the instructions, and make sure the room is very quiet during the entire process.

If you look in your manual around page 65, it discusses the crossover settings, if you do the advanced option you can set crossover for each independent speaker. I would suggest hooking the receiver to a tv or projector so you can look at the on screen to navigate. The receiver screen can sometimes be hard to navigate if that is what you are doing.

Mike, you're now experiencing the horrors of the Denon manual, which Denon has been careful to uphold over the years.

First, as to the crossovers resulting from the Audyssey measurements, the 90Hz and 100Hz settings should be kept. The 40Hz setting for the M22s indicates that in your room location the room gain is sufficient to provide adequate response down to 40Hz. This doesn't mean, however that it should be left there, since a good sub should be given more room to handle what it does best, up to say 80Hz.

The 1712 has a range of crossover settings from 40Hz to 250Hz available(see manual as Randy suggested, especially p.62). To set the M22 crossover to 80Hz, you use the "Advanced" crossover setting(yes, the regular manual crossover setting is global). To get to Advanced the 1712 may use an extra enter click or you simply try to go above 250Hz and it then switches to Adv(of course, the manual doesn't explain). The other settings shouldn't be changed; the data stored from the Audyssey measurements remains unchanged, and only the manual change to the M22s has an effect despite the Audyssey data.

The sub setting should remain at "LFE", not "+ main". That + setting would require the M22s to be set "Large" and run full-range, not a good idea.

No, the Dynamic EQ has nothing to do with the setting difficulties. It should be used at all times, with the only caution being that if some unusually loud popcrap CDs are played, the bass emphasis at lower than 0 volume settings may be overdone and result in some boominess(the compensation is designed for "average" loudness material). For such extra-loud stuff there's an adjustable Dynamic EQ offset which lessens the bass boost for them.

I finally found the advanced setting mentioned on pg 65. But when I change the setting to 80 then go back and look at the auto setup parameters it still says 40. I don't get it. Also are you saying set the m22'S TO 80 but leave the VP100 at 100 and the QS8's at 90? And the Bass setting should be LFE not LFE + Main. I have played a few different things today, both music and movie and I am very happy with the sound right now.

Mike, the "auto setup parameters" remain unchanged in the data(and those settings can be "recalled" later to undo any changes made manually), as mentioned above, so if you read them, any manual changes you've made don't show there. If you correctly reset the M22s to 80Hz, that'll show up as you run through the numbers in the speaker setting menu.

John, when and if i get a processor with Audyssey, you can expect another one of these threads grin

Awesome, I got it. Thanks for your help. I didnt think anyone could write a manual more confusing than HK but I was wrong. Havent had much time to actually play anything but I did put a BR movie in for a few minutes and the difference between this Denon with Audyssey and my HK 645 was immediately evident. Loud clear dialog and wall shaking explosions, just what I was looking for.

Onkyo's manuals aren't the bees knees, either, but I think the manuals' complexity is a function of the devices' complexity.

"...I think the manuals' complexity is a function of the devices' complexity."

Ken, you're starting to impress me! ;-)
