I posted this on AVS Forum but didn't get a lot of reponses so I thought I'd try here, figure I'd something from the voracious posters...

I have a 45TX and my wife gave the nod for a plasma (WOO HOO!!!) for our family Xmas present. I'm looking at the Panny 6UY (commercial version) to match my video sources. The sources will be old Proscan VCR, Sony Sat-T60 (DirecTivo) and Denon 2200 DVD player.

I want to have the 2 component sources (Sat-T60 and 2200) connected to the 45TX and the 6UY connected to the 45TX component output. Here's my question. Will the picture quality degrade because of this? Most of my viewing will be SD for now, I don't plan on HD until the HD DirecTivo comes out.

BTW, I do understand that I'll also want to connect S-vid (maybe composite too) for things like the OSD of the sources but I'm more concerned w/ the main PQ. Thanks in advance.

kinda have something for you to think about. when we purchased our plasma, and hooked it up, the picture was terrible on the lower numbered stations using analog cable. we had to upgrade to digital cable in order to view the lower channels. you might need to re-think your wiring plans.

not sure i understand your concern. We are using DirecTV so I'd expect the PQ to be decent, considering that it is compressed. What is it about the wiring that would worry you? Now your making me paranoid...

I think he mis-read your post. The DirecTV signal shouldn't display any of the fuzziness that analog cable sometimes does.

Even if you had analog cable, the fuzziness is something the cable company can and should correct.

just meant that if you were purchasing cables, you would need to allow enough to connect a cable box; didn't know about your direct tv.

I'm not sure whether or not the 45TX does component up conversion so you may have to connect a component cable to the TV and a composite to carry the VCR signal. Perhaps someone using it can answer that.

However, the quality shouldn't degrade noticeably. I do this with a Denon AVR-4802 and a Mitsu 73411 right now (though with significanly more sources).
my recollection is that the 45TX does not do up conversion. I thought only Denon did that? I checked my 45TX manual and didn't notice anything related to up conversion.

twodan, yeah, I plan on getting a bunch of cables. Who knows, I may even try the Axiom video cables too.

HK's high end unit does it as does several of the Yamahas now. I believe Integra does which means Onkyo must as well.

My 45TX does excellent component switching -- no appreciable PQ degradation with 1080i materials. It does not do video up/down conversions, and yes, you do need an S-video connection to view OSD.
