I recently bought the Radio Shack SPL meter (digital). I have the Epic 60 system and a Yamaha RXV 1300 receiver. When I started the test tone generator I found that I could not adjust the levels of the main speakers (the manual confirmed this) - I could only adjust the center and the surrounds using the Yammi. Also, I had to select 60 db on the meter since it would not register the sound from the mains at 70 db. The mains were at about 63 db so I adjusted all speakers to match that level (I used the volume control on the bass to adjust it). Will this give me optimal results or is there a way to fool the receiver into allowing me to adjust the levels of the main speakers?

Thanks.

Can you adjust balance of left and right mains? Can you boost each channel that way?

when i did my 1300, i too had to balance them first, then set the others to match the mains. my guess would be if the mains were "turned down", the receiver might struggle when cranked. kinda like when my wife turns the volume down on the cable box instead of the receiver, then wonders why it's "so soft".

I can adjust the balance but not the level of each channel. It seems to be a factory set level that can not be changed.

I'm not really following what the problem is. You can adjust the other speakers in relation to the mains and of course you adjust the overall level with the main volume control. Why would you undo the calibration by just changing the main speaker volume? As to not being able to calibrate at the 70dB range on the meter, are you sure that you didn't unintentionally set the -10dB setting on the mains in the set menu?

JohnK,

Thanks for your input. The problem is that the receiver allows me to adjust the level of all speakers except the mains. I have to crank up the volume quite a bit to get reasonably loud sound. I believe that if I could adjust the level of the mains at any given volume and then adjust the other speakers to match the mains, I would get louder sound without turning up the volume knob a whole lot. Am I missing something? Everything sounds great - I just have to turn it up till I see about -30db or so on the receiver display.

Avian, a 70% volume setting shouldn't be worrisome. Since you didn't mention it, note the end of my previous reply. It's unlikely, but there is a setting that drops the main speaker levels(i.e. if they're too sensitive in relation to the other speakers)by 10dB. If you haven't done so, double-check that it's still at the normal 0 setting.
