I'd like to get the AVR-3803, and pair it up with the m80s. Their impedance is 4 ohms, and the receiver's manual says 6 to 16 ohms for front, centre and surround speaker output. Later, the manual says damage can occur below 4 ohms, but that's more of a general statement.

Is anyone running the 3803 with M80s? Is it overheating? I may just go with the 60s intead, for piece of mind, compatability with other systems and since the room size is only 17 by 17 anyway.

Giro,
I run (4) m80ti (1) Vp150 and (4) Qs8 on my Denon 3803 and have for the last 8 mo. I have had no problems with heating up the receiver or any othe problems. In the beginning I was concerned from all I heard about 4 OHM Imp but I ran calibrated temps on the receiver and the temp never rose above 118 degrees even on a hot California day. I wouldn't worry this is a fantastic system m80 and Denon 3803.
Good Luck,
Lee

In a 17x17 room, and I'm gonna guess that your ceilings are 8', that would make your room approx. 2300 cubic ft. The M60's would be more than enough for that room size, and feel the M80's would be too much. My room is also approx. 2300 cubic ft. and I almost went with the M80's until I saw that they were meant for rooms much bigger than mine. Yeah, IMO the M60's would be a better match.

My room is 20x13x8 (2080 CF) and my system sounds fantastic. The M80's don't over power the room at all I have a beautiful sound stage and presentation. I could not be happier then I am with this combination.

Hey Koiman,
4 M80's and 4 qs-8, can I ask you a little about your setup. Are you running a setup for music, and one for HT? Just interested in how people setup their equipment. I have 2 M80's, and 2 QS-8, and 1 VP-150. I plan on getting 2 more QS-8's for 7.1

Thanks,

Rick

I have the 3802 and I would assume Koiman's setup is
center vp150
Main l/r and rear l/r = M80
Surround A = A pair of qs8
Surround B = another pair of qs8

Denon uses Surround A as the 7.1's rear channel. (and multizone if u set it as the 2nd zone)

I am also curious that many people mentioned to use qs8 as Rear Left/right and then use a more direct speaker at the back, is that the best setup? If I am correct, then one who use denon w/ 4 m80 and 4 qs8 should set
M80 as main Left/right and Surround A
Qs8 as Rear left/right and surround B

Ralderman,
I use the second set of M80 for the (B) channel on my Denon, at times I run the M80 when I play DVD-A or SACD so I have a perfect match all around and some times I will run the M80 and the QS8 as channel (A) and (B) for surround. Plus I have a set of QS8 for the rear channels. In all I have the best of all worlds I can run (A) (B) or (AB). In esence I have a set of QS8 to the Rear. The M80 are at about a 30 degree angle to the rear and side and a set of QS8 to the side and just ahead of me, the sound is completely surrounding. Then of course another set of M80 front (L) and (R) with the VP 150 Center on top of the TV.

wow, that's amazing. I would like to be as rich as you are. Now that I've heard your story, I guess my denon3802 can handle a pair of M80 and a pair of qs8 and a vp150 since 3803 and 3802 has the same output per channel.

I would recommend that you consider monopolar speakers (such as the Axiom m2i) for rear speakers in 7.1. Rear surround information is not meant to be dispersed, and if you want to listen to DVD-Audio or SACD, it will sound much better (IMHO) if the rear channels are monopolar speakers set slightly behind the listening position.

This is the way my speakers are set up, and I feel it is a great compromise solution for HT and music.

Thanks MHorgel. I always go back and forth between qs-8's and front firing speakers.

Thanks,

Rick
