Upgrading my home theater with Axiom speakers (M60s, VP150, and QS8s) and was wondering whether to include the EP175. I currently have a 10" Velodyne that I like (though it is new enough that I can return it for cash). QUESTION: Do I order the EP175 and compare the two (sucking up the shipping charges if I return the EP175) or is it not even worth the effort?

which model Velodyne do you own?

10" CHT. Price was comprable to what I'll be paying for the EP175. Thanks, in advance, for your thoughts.

Ockam,
If you don't mind me asking, have you become displeased with the Velo? I've got the 12" CHT and have been very happy with my purchase. Velodyne make some of the best (and compared to some others expensive) subs in the world. Are you just curious to see if there is an increased performance with the EP175?

I had a CHT10 as well. Great sub!! Velodyne does subs very well. I'd look for a used CHT10, buy it and use a twin sub set up. If you have an SACD or DVD Audio player, I'd get a B Stock Outlaw ICBM bass management unit with stereo sub outs and run a pair of Velos out of the Outlaw. You'll also protect your speakers with the ICBM because most receivers do not provide bass management in multichannel direct mode.

Thanks for the replies. I like the CHT 10 but am just trying to make sure I made the best choice before it becomes non-returnable. Going with dual subs is something I would definitely consider, but not at this time. There is so much stuff posted about the VTF-2, it makes me wonder whether I should just go there. The tough part is that you can't actually hear these subs without incurring at least some cost, i.e., shipping charge, so that is the reason for my original post (get a consensus whether it is worth the shipping costs to do a side by side analysis or whether there is so much, or so little, difference that such an effort isn't even worth it). Thanks, again, and I'd love to hear any further thoughts you may have on this.

where are you located Ockham? There may be someone in your vicinity who has a VTF-2 or an Axiom sub. You could arrange a listening session and cart the Velo over to their place to compare.

I have the VTF2 and highly recommend it. If you want to hear it, maybe check the audition list and see if anyone near you has it.

Simple, yet sublime. Thanks so much for that thought. Turns out that the good folks at HSU are located in Anaheim, California which is about 10 miles from where I live. I talked to some guy over there who said, "Come on in and bring your Velodyne with you." Too cool. The only tough part now is that I have to be as objective as possible while in HSUs offices. I'll let you all know how it turns out.

I've not heard all of the Velo subs, but the ones I did hear sounded like they were geared for HT, and not music. Really loud, and really boomy. Great for movies, but music...bleck. Hsu makes subs with pretty much one goal in mind. Accuracy. Much like Axiom speakers, a Hsu sub reproduces low bass with superb accuracy, which means tight and clean. It'll only BOOM if it's supposed to boom.

I also highly recommend trying to find someone in your area with a Hsu. Bring your velo along and give them a go.

Just missed your last post while I was writing this. I'm pretty sure you'll be bring home a Hsu with you after your visit. I've always wanted to go visit their place as well, but their hours never match up with when I'm available to go.

What a great opportunity to try the HSU and A/B it with your current sub!
They make a great product and my choice was between them and SVS (I got an SVS). I had a Velo CHT-10 for a couple of days and had to return it. No matter where I put it, the room just swallowed it up. No problem now; the 20-39 PCi is burly.

I'm guessing we will see a post pretty soon describing the acquisition of a brand new HSU!
