I recently completed the following setup;

axiom m60, vp150, qs8, and hsu stf-2 running on an onkyo tx-nr801 receiver.
the receiver gets pretty warm when a dvd is running. i have the receiver and dvd player on a non-enclosed tv stand. there are 4 inches of clearance between the top of the receiver and the top of the stand. is this enough room for ventilation or do i need to install a pair of fans? (the manual recommends 8")

see picture - http://home.comcast.net/~awaters2879/Picture_044.jpg

also, does anyone know of a solid cooling solution???

Ice is a solid, and often cools things quite well. You'd probably want to isolate the resulting liquid runoff from the electronics though.

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

I think you'll be fine.

i'll put some frosty glasses (from your picture) around the sides. that way i can collect the condensation on the shelf.

that might be tight. do you not have AC in the summer or blast the heating in the winter? if so, maybe a fan or more space woudl help if you are concerned. otherwise, a decent room temperature should be ample enough to keep it from overheating - especially if you have AC on those canicular days...

I think for starters I'd put the receiver on the bottom shelf, if you do run into heat problems add a small fan.

metalaaron,

No matter what the brand, most 5-, 6-, and 7.1-channel receivers run fairly warm when all channels are cranking. "Pretty warm" is okay; "too hot to touch" isn't. More ventilation is always better, of course.

My H/K has only about 1.5 inches above it, which isn't nearly enough, but oddly, I've never heard the auxiliary fan kick on in the back. It runs very warm all the time.

Regards,

thank you guys.

i moved it to the bottom with brute force. it does seem to run a tad bit cooler down there. plus, the shelf in the middle allows for a little more ventilation. i think it will be okay. i can leave my hand on it with no worries. it cools off very fast when the unit is shut down.

ironically enough, my a/c stopped working this weekend. that did not help!

I initially installed my ONKYO TX-SR800 in a similar situation and it also ran vey hot. After READING the instruction booklet - which says to leave a mininum of 8 inches of air space above the receiver, I rearranged things to allow for this. I run M80s (see bio) and it is now just warm to the touch even after several hours of operation.

yeah, the onkyo's are known for running hot.

My old Onkyo Integra ran very hot. I had to take it out of my entertainment center and place it on top of the center. If not, it's overheat protection would kick in within a few minutes and shut it down.

I've noticed that my Rotel processor runs fairly warm as well, but nothing like that Onkyo did.

i did READ the manual as stated in my initial post.
i think it will be okay if i put two fans on the back. but, i may just go with a new stand anyways.

any recommendations that have ample space for the receiver?
i really like this one http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1051826290678&skuId=5461234&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03116
, but there doesn't seem to be much more space for the receiver. i'm striking out on dimension specs for it.
