I was at my local dealer Myer-Emco this afternoon and tried out both Yamaha Rx-v1400 and Rx-v2400. Both movie and 2-channel stereo music sound awesome! I'm sold at Yamaha Rx-v2400. One problem is that i hear them with B&W speakers.

How do these receivers sound with M60ti? Anyone owns or has heard these receivers with axiom speakers? I'm also interested in Denon 3805 as well, but the local Myer-Emco does not have it on display....How is Denon 3850 compared to Yamaha rx-v2400?

thanks for input.

audiofan,

since most people believe that 'bigger is better', i am sure that most would say to get the 2400 if you can afford it. as far as pairing it with the M60s, you shouldnt have any probs there.. i would stay clear of the M80s though, rumor has it that the Yamaha's wont support a 4 ohm load. and most everyone here loves the whole line of Denon products. it basically comes down to which receiver has the 'sound' that YOU prefer. i know the Denons have a lot of great features, and most say that the Yamaha auto calibration system is a crock, so its up to you.

they are both great companies, that make great HT receivers. take in some input, do some research for your needs, make your purchase and dont have any second thoughts..

but if you ever think you might go with the M80's, take the Denon for sure..

this is just my opinion, you will get others!!

AF, several on the board use 1400s or 2400s with Axiom speakers and may reply later. Neither they nor any other well-designed receiver "sound" at all, they just transparently amplify the sound that they're given. A 2400(or even a 1400 in your small room) would be an excellent choice to use with the M60s or any of the Axiom speakers and would have more than enough power. The new Denon 3805 shares with the Yamahas the advantage of automatic room equalization and it's unknown at this time whether one is more effective than the other. The basic sound of the speakers would be identical with either, of course, but if some other feature of the 3805 attracts you and the higher price(the microphone is about $60 extra) is acceptable, you won't go wrong with that either.

Audiofan,

I run an RX-V1400 with M60's and HSU VTF-2 MKII. I am extremely happy with the reciever and the way my setup sounds. I needed some help to set it all up but that's because I'm a newbie at this. This is my first High end Setup. After a few days of experimenting with trying different settings I can now say I'm pretty comfortable navigating all the menus and setting everything as I please. This reciever in combination with the M60s truly blows me away. I sit on the couch listening to music everyday after work and even more on weekends.

JohnK,

I agree that an 'amplifier' should do nothing more than increase the amplitude of a signal and therefore should not influence the 'sound'. However, a reciever is not just an amplifier, it converts digital signals to analog, it decodes information into discrete channels, it applies 'tone' to the signal (equalization), it applies varying amounts of harmonic distortion and it amplifies as well. Therefore the scope for changing the 'sound' is quite great. I recently switched from a Yamaha 5560 receiver to a Denon 3803, and believe me, they 'sound' different.
thank you all for your input. I'll stop by another local deal Tweeter tonight and and see if they carry Denon 3805. I will listen both and make decision later.

Is there any online dealers carry Yamaha, except local authorized dealers?

I'm running the RX-V1400 on my M60's and I'm very happy with it. Before the Yammy; I had the Denon 1601 and it sounded good but not as good as the RX-V1400. I know its the bottom end of Denon lineup so comparing it isn't fair. Some say the RX-V1400 makes the M60s brighter but I didn't find it that way. I think its all about setting it up right.

People here rave about the 3803 and 3805; so either way I think you wont be disapointed.
Rather than saying that the 1400/2400 do not support 4-ohm speakers, I'd say that none of the folks around here know if they do. Yamaha claims they do and I think it's reasonable that they do. I've not heard of related 4-ohm problems given by the 1400/2400. I personally won't feel bad about hooking M80s up to my 1400 when I've the money to do so.

As far as other Yamaha receivers (HTR line, et cetera), YMMV.

The 2400 that I had pushed my power hungry 4 ohm Maggies just fine. The center and surrounds are 6 ohm. I had the 2400 for almost six months and never had a problem.

Aren't the Denon AVRs that are always meantioned here a bit more than say the yammi 1400? I'm looking for a receiver and for the money I'm trying to find one that can beat the 1400 (I'll be getting M60's myself)

Hi all,
I had a chance to listen to both rx-v1400, rx-v2400 and avr-3805 at tweeter. Between v1400 and v2400 , i don't see much difference except v2400 has more power, but not much. Then , I listen denon 3805. I must say that Denon sounds warmer and Yamaha sounds more brighter. However, I decide to pick yamaha rx-v1400 and hook it up with M60ti. I think Yamaha is too bright to me when it's paired with M60ti. I will bring it back and exchange to denon 3805. If it sounds better with M60ti...then Denon is a keeper...Let you know how it goes later....

If anyone here has listened M60ti with Denon avr-3805,please pipe in ...:)

thanks all

I'll be interested to hear if you find the Denon different from the Yamaha. Please let us know what you think.
audiofan,
I heard NO distinguishing sound character whatsoever when doing an actual a/b blind test at home with a Denon 3802, an Onkyo 797, a H/K (slightly older) 380i or 2 other amps.
Don't kid yourself.
When these are all volume equalized, set on the same speakers and heard in the same room blind, you would never tell the difference.
chesseroo
You're probably right. I didn't do any calibration with rx-v1400 at all. When i look at the equalizer, either Treble ro Bass, they all set to 0db. In general i like rx-v1400 , especially I can still hear the sound very clear when i turn the volume to half way ( as i remember, it -20db). It's just a little bright to me. Note that I didn't do any calibartion yet.

audiofan,
You really have to watch what they do to those receivers in the stores (or at least keep in mind the possibilities).
It is possible the audio salesmen tinker with certain settings to make their higher priced units sound better. There are TONS of settings that could do this other than just treble or bass though. For instance, one could turn on the Yammy1400 unit where they tweaked the "centre channel width" in DPLII to shrink it down so the soundstage is reduced and more collapsed into the centre. Then they bring you over to the Yammy2400 where this setting is done correctly for the speaker spacing. The user would think "oh ya, this 2400 has a much better soundstage than the 1400" not knowing what a simple tweak will do to change that.

Other than SPL calibration when doing comparisons, this is by far my biggest concern when i walk into any audio store. That is why the ultimate test is best done at home where you can tinker with things yourself.
Worry more about your budget and required features, then take the unit home to audition it (most places have good return policies, esp. big box stores) before you decide 100% which unit you like. If you put some good cash and a bit of testing into the purchase, you will have a receiver for the next 15 or 20 years or maybe more that you know was a good decision as a buy.
Yeah..i agree. That's why i brought home RX-V1400. Unfortunately, RX-V2400 and AVR-3805 are not available until tonight...and I can't wait to bring them all home to audit them. Tweeter has a good return policy. In fact, the saleman suggested to try them all at home.

When turn the volume of RX-V1400 to 0db without playing any sources, i hear hissing sound....Is this a bad receiver? I would expect Yamaha rx-v1400 is a high-end receiver so the hissing sound should not present.....

thanks.
You must have very sensitive ears. I never have any encounters with mine. (hissing sounds)

I admit the RX-V1400 is a hard receiver to setup but when you get it right; you'll be thankful you bought it. It took me diff setting to get it right.
Try switching sources with the volume turned up. Is the hiss constant or does it only happen with particular sources selected?
Finally, i settle down with denon avr-3805 . The saleman also suggested me to try out 3803 which i will do tomorrow...the price has been reduced to $900.
