I asked WhatFurrer this same question because he has M22's in the back and thought I would pose it to you guys. What is the genereal consensus on running M22's for rear surrounds as opposed to M2's in the back? My planned system is M60/VP150/QS8 for 5.1 with home theater and adding either M2's or M22's for rear surround to enjoy with SACD/DVD-A . How would the M22's match up with the M60's and VP150?

Folks'll say that the M22s match up very well with the VP150 and teh M60s. If you're going to use them for SACD, go with the 22s - they'll give you a better frequency response and a fuller sound in the rear. Supplemented with a good sub, they should sound very similar to your 60s up front.

My system is the same as yours with the exception that I have the M80's. I had the M22's wall mounted as rear channels and they sounded wonderful! But, there was a problem - the M22's were mounted using the Axiom FMB's on each speaker. Over a period of time I noticed that the speakers were slowly drooping downwards. The FMB's were still tight in the wall, but the inserts were gradually pulling out of the M22's. I tightened them up, but the speakers began drooping again. Although I was past my 30-day return, I convinced Axiom that there was a problem with wall mounting M22's with the FMB, and I returned them and purchased M2's. I would have preferred the M22's, but wall mounting was the only option in my current HT so I had to go with the lighter speaker. Maybe if Axiom will strengthen the mounting insert in the M22's, I can try them again.

Of course if you're not wall mounting the M22's, you have no problem and will be VERY happy with these as rear speakers!

I'm about to buy the M80's. Do you have any suggestion on setting them up? I'm also looking at the M22's for the rear (on stands). I'm told the M80's are difficult to dial in.

Floor mount (of course), toed in slightly, and be sure your receiver is set for 4 ohm. Check my home page for pictures of my setup with the M80's.

I gotta question, was gonna start a new thread but this one is very similar...

I got a HK 630 on the way and was planning on setting up 7.1 in my basement just because. Anyway I am definitely getting pair of M60's, a VP150 and QS8's for the sides. I was going to use some old Advent bookshelfs for the rear speakers (hang on walls) to save some coin.

Two things have me reconsidering this. The Advents aren't huge but they aren't small either. Also the look of having all Axioms is really starting to grow on my mind.

Sound however is going to be the biggest deal. I guess I haven't read for sure, I'm just assuming that the side surrounds in a 7.1 still get more information (from movies) than the rear surrounds?

I believe it depends on the processing. Dolby EX uses differnet information for the back channels, mainly for ambience. I don't know how much or little (It might depend on the director?) the rear channels get. Good thought, I would be intrested knowing more about this.

I have a friend that just re-coned his vintage Advents. I like the sound of them. You should hear them behind a tube amp, its incredible. If you decide to get rid of the Advents, I think you could sell them quick.

I run M60s up front, M22s as rears, a modified Cerwin-Vega center, and a JBL sub. The system sounds great. I did try the QS8s but they were not the sound I was looking for. Will be using M80s up front, M60s as rears, VP150 as center, and an SVS sub when we settle into our new house. When the new system is set up I'll let you know how it sounds.
