Hello. Man! you people know an awful lot, so this is the place for me to get help. I am looking at building a system. My room is pretty straightforward 27 X 14.5 x 8 I am looking at either the Denon 3805 or Onkyo 801 or 901 or something along those lines up to a $1000. ( I am wondering if I need to spend that much though. Anyway, I noticed the Denon has Dolby IIx the Onkyos only II. As I understand it Dolby IIX will make cd's play through all 7.1 speakers (I have none yet but that advice will be solicited later)and IIx through only 5.1. Does the Onkyo or for that matter any receiver without IIX have a way to send music sound through all 7.1? Am I misunderstanding how this works? Or is that what the dts or Neo functions do in music mode, allow a stereo signal to pass through all 7 speakers eliminating need for Dolby IIX? Thanks for all your help

IZUB:

As you know, PLII will take a two channel source and convert it to 5.1, PLIIx takes a two channel source and converts it to 7.1.

In answer to part of your question though, yes. Harman Kardon has what they call Logic 7 which takes a 2 channel source and plays it in 7.1. Marantz has a similar feature I think, although I'm not certain. I believe theirs is only 6.1 though.

You might look at Ecost, they've got the new Onkyo 602 and 702 which both has PLIIx. The 602 is $499, and the 702 is $799.

izub,

I would go for the denon. they tend to have better build quality and better amp sections than onkyo.

onkyo's tend to overheat and don't handle low ohm speaekrs well at all. on the other hand, the denon 3805 can easily take on the M80's, a true 4ohm load.

Onkyo is pretty good, but I am a died in the wool Denon guy. The build quality on their stuff is just excellent.

as an ONKYO 701 owner, i will second that, sort of. i wouldnt say that my 701 "overheats", but it does get hot. but it has NEVER clipped out, or cut off due to overheating. actually, it has never clipped out or cut off for anything. and i have never tried to use it to push a 4ohm load, but it is not recommended. from what i have been told, the denons can handle the 4ohm load much better.

but with that said, i have 8ohm M60's, and my onkyo pushes them just fine. i have no need or desire to upgrade.
