Anyone know if there are any benefits to watching DVD's on a Pioneer 578 vs a Panasonic RP62. Is there a good place that would have reviews of both with ratings to see which does better? This is part of my determining if I want to keep the 578 I just got.

Secrets of Home Theater has very good comparisons of DVD players. The Panasonic RP62 is a great DVD player. I believe it has the Faroudja chip. I had one, or it was an RP26, can't remember. It was great. Excellent picture quality. Best low cost DVD Player, IMO? Sony DVP NS685

I gotta agree 2X6. I have the Sony DVP 755V which is essentially the same as the 685, just single disc instead of 5 disc changer and the PQ is great not to mention the SACD playback is pretty good as well. Not too thrilled about the redbook playback though.

The RP62 uses the Genesis FLI2200 chip which by all accounts is a great one. Some prefer the Faroudja or Silicon Image over it but none the less it's still a good one. Unless I'm mistaken I don't think Panasonic has ever used Faroudja.

RP56, not 26, I had one of those, it had the Faroudja chip, so did the RP62.

Actually, no it didn't but it's late I don't feel like arguing! lol

Panasonic - DVD-RP62 Deinterlacer Maker: Genesis
Deinterlacer Model: FLI2200

Panasonic - DVD-RP56 Deinterlacer Maker: Genesis
Deinterlacer Model: FLI2200

and the best of them all, the Panasonic - DVD-RP82 and once again you guessed it Deinterlacer Maker: Genesis, Deinterlacer Model: FLI2200. Like I said, to my knowledge Panasonic has never used Faroudja.

That's what I seemed to remember about the Panasonic as well as was one of the reasons I picked it to start with. How about the Pioneer, which I am thinking of using instead so that I can SACD? What chip does it use? I assume it is not as good as the one the Panasonic uses.

John
What does Phillips use? I have the 795SA.

If your talking about the 578a, it uses a Media Tech chip. The deinterlacer is average at best but it's still a decent player.

Bray, for the last few years Phillips has been using Faroudja. Yours actually runs the older Faroudja FLI-2301. It's been around for a bit but it's still a great little chip.

I have to disagree with you on this one NeverHappy. I know for a fact that I read in numerous places that the RP-56 had the Faroudja "Sage" chip. I can't speak of any other models, but the RP-56 had the Sage chip. I remember this because at the time it was the cheapest DVD player to have this chip, and pretty much every review at the time mentioned that it was almost a steal to get this chip in a rather cheap DVD player.

Here's a review I found that mentions that. Scroll down for the RP-56.

Panasonic - DVD-RP56 MPEG Maker: MEI
MPEG Model: MN677533MP
Deinterlacer Maker: Genesis
Deinterlacer Model: FLI2200

We are both right to be honest. According to Secrets It uses the cheaper Sage/Faroudja but according to Panasonic it uses Genesis. If I was a betting man I would bet there was a production change somewhere in the middle and they switched for whatever reason. In the end, the difference is marginal at best anyway. The Faroudja and Genesis are both good chips with Silicon Image or Zoran being the king of the heap.
