I am considering getting the new QS stands for my QS8s. I currently have my QS8s balanced on bricks on top of CD towers. The bricks raise the downward drivers about 4 inches above the top of the towers. I thought this would be safe for the drivers but figure I'm messing with the design intent by redirecting the driver horizontally almost immediately. I figure the new stands would all the speakers to work as designed and look a whole lot better. BUT - my question: the stands are only 38 inches tall. This puts the speakers exactly at ear level which according to most of what I'm reading is a foot or two too low. Any thoughts? Has anybody used the stands and found the height to be good or bad?

Thanks everyone!

I have the "old" stands...if you want to call them that. I just got them a few weeks ago. Anyway. Far enough back they're not bad. Up close though I wouldn't recommend them. Currently I have them on top of, ironically, my QS8 boxes. They lean up against a wall, so it's okay. I can't drill them to the wall (thus the need for stands). They work better this way. Nothing replaces good ole' fashioned mounting on the wall, but kudos to Axiom for providing a stand to accomodate for their very unique speaker design.

So bottom line. Only if you have no other choice. Ideally these should be placed roughly 3 feet above listeners head (usually 6 feet from the ground).

Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts. With my room, wall mounting is not an option so guess it's a no-go unless I got stands for the stands. I'm curious how the height was chosen for them.

Hi Dale,
I don't want to hijack the thread, so I'll try staying close to topic. I really wish Axiom would come up with a better ceiling mount solution for the QS series. In my case I have 9' ceilings and plan to mount all 4 qs8's from the ceiling. I am planning a DIY mount with a bracket I found at Menards, as the only mount Axiom offers allows for about 4" clearence. Once I get my idea done, I'll post some pics....

now back to your regularly scheduled broadcast

Dale:
I can't speak for Axiom regarding the height of the new stands, but I do know that the same thing was discussed with the older speaker stands and evidently it was a safety matter. Those little QS8s are VERY solid, and I think a scenerio of one of them falling from a 5' or 6' height onto a kids head is scary...

FWIW, the new stands LOOK very cool!

Mark -

I think in my case the shorter stand would be more dangerous - I'm imagining my cat looking at it thinking "yeah, I can make that" and then a flurry of claws, shredded grills, punctured drivers, etc. After which I'm enjoying my new "4.1" system.

Dale:
Unfortunately, Axiom can't help you with that situation then. They don't sell dogs! BA-HA-HA-HA!

Please don't tell me that this will start another Dog VS. Cat thread!

Have you considered just constructing your own?

Stand, I mean.

To answer your question, and to mirror that which has already been spoken, yes...the design was based on safety. Any higher and those babies could tip over. They're designed to be free floating, not necessarily for leaning against a wall as I did.

Mark & Misfit:

Thanks for your input and sorry I hadn't responded til now. Mark - putting a couple bricks on CD towers for me IS construction. Much in the same way that actually heating my pop-tarts counts as cooking. But you are right, those stands do look cool.
