Hi guys....been a while since last post, need advice on the 2910(955s). Once you've setup your receiver and calibrated with spl meter and wish to play sacd or dvd-a does the 2910 have a calibration sequence for 5.1? If it does must you calibrate or can you skip it?

Yes, the 2910 DOES have a calibration sequence. See page 35 of the manual. I have not done this yet, but I intend to do it.

When playing a DVD-A or SACD, once my receiver is set to the correct source (DVD), it is necessary, in the receiver, to select the correct input, which, in this case, is the "multichannel" setting. This setting selects the receiver's analog multichannel inputs into which the 2910 is connected, as opposed to the optical digital input into which the 2910 is also connected in order to get the soundtracks from movies.

My question is, when using the multichannel inputs on my receiver, am I bypassing the receiver's speaker level settings I set by using my meter and Avia tones? If the answer is yes, then the 2910 calibration should certainly be performed. If the answer is no, then it can be skipped.

I believe the receiver's calibration is bypassed, yes. At least this is the case with my setup (3910 running into my Onkyo 702). I presume my Onk is typical of other receivers in this regard...

I believe you're correct, Steve. And since I'm using an Onkyo TX-DS797, which is pretty much an older version of the 702, I'll assume the same is true for me. As I said above, I intend to do this calibration. Thanks for your input.

Hi hk900plus,

The advice from Ajax and Engine Joe is excellent. I'd only add that if you have an H/K A/V receiver with multichannel inputs, the H/K offers full bass management, including delay and distance calibration, for its multichannel inputs. Of course, to do this it digitizes everything through its internal processor which, to my ears, results in no signal degradation.

If you owned an H/K and decided to use its multichannel bass management capabilities, you would not calibrate the 2910's internal settings other than to set everything to "Large" so you wouldn't impose any losses on the signals going to the H/K.

Regards,
