This is my dilemma. I can't really afford to go the M60s route and afford a decent subwoofer. Pretty much my two options are going with some M22s and a decent sub, or going with M60s and no sub. Which do you think would be better?

I should note that I have a 15'x15'x17' room. Not really big, just a high ceiling. Listening area 8-10' from the front speakers. I typically listen to music/movies at a moderate volume.

M22s + sub, no question. With all that volume, the bass coming from the M60s might be a bit thin. A sub will handle the bass much better, and the M22s are perfect for that size room.

I'l throw in another opinion, go for the M60s and get a sub in a year or two. I've been listening to music on my pair (M60s) with and without a sub and although the sub adds a lot the M60s on their own are very enjoyable. You can live without a sub for a year or two and life will go on .

I second what Ford said. I would invest in the M60s now and then focus on the sub later when you have replenished the funds. The 22s are a great set of speakers, but they cannot compare with the M60s....especially with such a large room. When listening to music, I never have to use a sub w/ my 60s. They have plenty of bass.

Guess it depends on the music / movies split. For a pure music system it's a no-brainer. As Ford Prefect says, M60s on their own cover the bass just fine for music.

If you're going to be listening to movies a fair amount I would have to vote for M22 + sub -- my sub is out on loan right now so I'm watching movies on M60s without sub, and it's really not the same.

Sorry this is not like "what receiver should I get" where we all agree on the answer

Totally agree with that one bridgman. A sub is a must for movies, if movies get the 22s with a sub. IF you are going to listen to all or even mostly music, I would go with the 60s. I know I went with 22s and a sub, and later upgraded to the 60s, and now use the 22s as rears. The 22s are a great speaker. But at more than twice the price, size, and larger and more drivers, while very respectable, they can't, nor should they hang with the 60s on music.

M60's with Sub.

I'll throw in a "sixth" for the M60s. Movies are acceptable on them, even without a sub. If you've never owned a sub, you'll enjoy the "extra" bass that the 60s give you above and beyond what you have now. They will shake the room when something good happens.

Save your money, and then buy the best sub that your budget will allow. It will give your system another boost and you'll be thrilled all over again.

For music, the 60s will be fine (big understatement) all by themselves.

Maybe get the M2's and a really good sub now, no need for the M22's if you are going to have upgradeitis anyways. Then eventually upgrade to the M60's and move the M2's to rear duty. Then get a VP150 and a pair of QS8's and you will have a kick ass 7.1 system and you never bought a product you would need to take back or sell.

I would second that. I ran M2s and a big sub for a while and it was terrific. I like M60s for music though -- still can't seem to get "mains + sub" to sound like a good full-range speaker.

Actually your suggestion is almost exactly the path I followed over the course of a year. First M2s and a sub, then M60s, then VP100, and I'll be picking up the QS8s tonight.
