my wife and i are fineally getting out of apartments and buying a house. i'm would like some suggestions as to what would be the best speaker set-up for the space that i have.

at this point, i'm leaning toward a 5.1 m80/vp150/qs8/ep600 (epic 80-600) system because i like big full sound but am still completely open to suggestions from those that know more than me.

here is a picture of the space that i have at:

(i couldn't figure out how to link a photo, sorry). the yellow box on the image represents where the television and front sound stage will be placed - my wife has spoken.

thanks in advance.

oops ... i forgot a couple of things ...

1) our tv/movie to music ratio is about 80:20.
2) we currently have a 46" rear projection tv that will eventually be upgrade to a similar sized plasma or lcd.
3) the celings are 8' tall

Welcome!

That would be a WONDERFUL system.

Well, your wife has picked what appears to be the best spot for the front sound stage, bless her. I think the 11 foot wall will be long enough to handle your display, speakers and equipment (I'll refer to this wall as the "front wall").

Not sure where the best place for your sub would be, but with an EP600, it may not matter. That sub will rock the house. Experiment with placement until you find the best spot for it that your wife can live with.

I'm assuming that the seating, be it chairs or sofa, will be away from the wall since there appears to be a door in the wall opposite the front sound stage ( I will refer to this was as the "back wall"). Allowing 3 feet for display, speakers and equipment, and, at least, 3 feet behind the seating for the door to open, that will put you anywhere from 8 to 10 feet from the speakers and display. Close, but not too close. I sit about 8 feet from mine.

Your biggest problem will be placement of the QS8s. Since you have the seating away from the back wall (assuming that's correct) placing them on the back wall itself, one on either side of that door, at points equidistant from the sweet spot in the listening area, might work.

The only alternative I see, would be putting them on the side walls, one QS8 just to the side of the door in the 6' wall (the side closest to the front wall, assuming there's room for it there), the other on the wall with what appears to be a fireplace next to double doors. This would leave them at different distances from the listening area, but the QS8s are very forgiving when it comes to placement. That, and the ability to adjust for distance in your receiver's speaker setup menu, might allow for such placement.

Again, experimentation with positioning is the key here. Placing the QS8s on stands would be the only other thing I could think of.

Hopefully, others will chime in with more suggestions.

WEIRD! I just linked to the drawing, and when I preview my post the drawing shows up perfectly, but when I submit the post, as you can see, all I get is the little red X. Hmmm? In fact, when I preview this edit, I can see the drawing just fine. OY!

jack- i see the FULL image on your last post..

as far as the system, you might be just as good with M60's instead of the 80's. everything else sounds great.

Jallen, although I am in no way an audio 'expert' I can tell you that I have both a 60s system and an 80s system in my home and I wouldn't talk anybody out of buying a pair of 80s over a set of 60s if the difference in price were not an issue.

If someone were to rob my 60s at gunpoint I'd give in with a fight, if the 80s were the target, that SOB will be the sorriest soul on this planet for even the thought of trying to rob me!

And that's being honest.

An Epic80-600 would be an awesome setup. But being the cheapskate I am and if I were going to use it 80% for movies/TV, I'd consider saving the $ and going with M60 mains. But hey, if $ isn't a major concern, from all reports the M80's are king and you may just find yourself listening to more music than you first thought.

QS8's - you could mount them or the left one from the ceiling using the FMB .

Cheers

jallen

Like some others, I can't access your photo. But I agree with bigjohn - you may want to consider M60s, save some money and avoid the 4-Ohm issue. My M60s totally satisfy my 18' x 24' room. You can also save a few sheckels by going with the EP350 sub. Of course it's your choice.
