Quick setup questions, I have componet cable from avr to tv but only svideo from directv sat box and dvd player to avr. Is their any benifit to running componet cables from these two sorces to avr?
Also I ordered a hdmi to dvi cable to attach from dvd to tv input. My avr does not have hdmi so I run directly from dvd to tv and then anytime I use dvd player I chance settings on tv to different source correct? Thanks

If your DVD player and Sat. Box have component out hookups, yes you will get a better picture versus s-video. If you HK has enough component in hookups, that is the way I would go, and keep the one component out to the tv.

I believe your correct on the question regarding HDMI/DVI cable, unless your tv auto senses the incoming signal, you may have to change your input source.

This is usually done with a TV/Video button.

I agree that component is a higher level quality connection than s-video. Use the components on the SAT box if available.

Ok thanks, I will try tv/video choice before changing sources off tv setup. I guess I dont understand how the avr upgrades my s-video input to componet out to tv. If I upgrade to componets cables in to the avr it will be a cleaner souce or does the avr do the work of upconverting and therefore new cables would be a waste?

What AVR do you have?

Does it upconvert or is it one of the new upscaling models?

Upconvert just changes the type of connection without changing resolution. Upscaling changes resolution.

I'm not sure about 635 but just wanted to make a point -- the value of converting is to let you run fewer cables from receiver to TV, so you can standardize on whatever your highest quality source is. You probably won't get much benefit if all you are doing is having the receiver convert from SVideo to Component.

Now, on the other hand, let's say you have a Composite signal from a VCR, an S-Video signal from an old DVD player and Component video from your HD satellite box. The receiver would let you convert them all to Component and run one (Component) cable to the TV.

Note that this doesn't always work because the On Screen Display isn't always displayed on Component outputs. I'm pretty sure my HK630 is one of the offenders, possibly your 635 as well.
