I preordered a set of the outdoor M3ti speakers in "spiced rum" for our pool.

Just wondering if anyone else has preordered?

I haven't been all that active, recently, so I'm wondering if anything has been said about delivery dates.

I preordered a pair of Almond Bisque the day that the club letter came out.

Here is the info from Ian on them.

We are producing our Algonquin Weatherproof Outdoor Speakers, named in a contest on our message boards this month. These speakers, based on our award-winning M3 Bookshelf Speakers, come in Almond Bisque, Arctic White, Spiced Rum and Cape Cod Grey, and will be available on our site April 4th, shipping April 15th.

Whites ones about a week ago!

The price was too good to pass up.
Posted By: ratpack Re: Preorder M3ti - 04/04/07 11:15 AM
Thanks guys!!!!!

Bug, I should have known that you ordered a pair!!! You and I think too much alike. LOL!!!

The price sure was good and I have been pleased with my other Axiom speakers so I didn't have to look around too much.

After 10 months, I am still moving and packing, and unpacking and moving. It is surprising how much "stuff" you can accumulate in over 25 years. I had NO idea that I really was such a pack-rat. Guess my alias fits! LOL!!!

How are you guys planning to mount these? Do the come with mounting brackets, do you have to get the FM brackets or are you making your own?

Just noticed they are now listed off of the home page. Almond Bisque below.

Really haven't given it much thought. Ultimately, I plan to mount them on the wooden supports that hold up the rear deck and have them facing the pool.

I'm a bit confused here...these do not look like the ones featured in the Axiom showcase last month - those were wireless speakers (with a solar panel I believe). Are the wireless speakers still on the docket, or have they been replaced by the wired model?

I'm chomping at the bit for some outdoor speakers, but don't want to buy if there is more than one option.
Posted By: dllewel Re: Preorder M3ti - 04/09/07 07:39 PM
Axiom had in the works both a wired and wireless version. The wired version is now available, but not the wireless. I believe they are still planing on a release for the wireless models, just aren't there yet. Not sure when but we expect to see them at some point.
Posted By: Nachosgrande Re: Preorder M3ti - 04/09/07 08:08 PM
For those that are going wired how are you planning to route the wire to the outside? I have brick that makes things a bit difficult. Also, with the connection to an amp/receiver inside the house is there an issue with water getting in the binding post/speaker wire?
Posted By: Stymie Re: Preorder M3ti - 04/09/07 08:44 PM
For me, I plan on going through my attic and then dropping the wire through the eave. Given that location, I'm hoping the posts won't get wet. I have a separate receiver dedicated for this purpose and is in close proximity to the speakers. I probably won't need it, but I'm thinking about getting a BPA-1 from Emotiva to give them that extra little boost.
Posted By: ratpack Re: Preorder M3ti - 04/10/07 02:05 AM
You can get a drill bit that will go through brick and then seal the hole with a good grade of caulk. That is how I plan on running the wires.

If you use good installation techniques, this won't be an issue. Take a look at the following page and read the parts about "drip loops". The web page is not specifically about speaker cable, but the laws of physics still apply.

Hey Krich,

Did you by any chance ever work for a Tel Co? I was surprised to see someone mention the proper use of a drip loop. Even proffesional cable and satellite installers don't think of the drip loop because coax is generally too thick to do it cleanly.

Thanks! This comes in handy. I think I may wait for the wireless version and decide then.

While I have absolutley NO idea what Axiom may be offering in terms of wireless outside speakers, my opinion is that most of us will NOT be happy with wireless speakers!!!!

As I see it, there are 2 MAJOR issues:

1. Enough prime power to run the speakers at the desired volume/ level for the duration of intended use.

2. Garbled transmission from your receiver to the wireless speaker for whatever reason.

It is just too easy for me to run a couple of speaker wires to contend with the potential problems listed above.
Posted By: Nachosgrande Re: Preorder M3ti - 04/16/07 03:54 PM
I have a problem running wires from my basement (where HT presides) to the main floor, where the speakers would be ideally mounted. Can't figure a way to get the wires to the main floor and through the exterior wall without breaking apart walls in the kitchen and bathroom.
Posted By: ratpack Re: Preorder M3ti - 04/21/07 01:23 AM
Maybe it would be worthwhile to "consult" a good electrician??

Hi Ratpack and all,

To allay your worries about Axiom's wireless speakers (it's premature to condemn a product before it's even appeared!), I'll address a couple of the issues you mention and how Axiom is solving them.

It's Axiom's judgment that currently there are no well-designed wireless speakers, the problems being gross underpowering and low-tech transmission systems. The goal of our wireless engineering program is to produce an authentically high-fidelity wireless speaker with lots of power and no communication problems within its stated range.

1. Axiom has developed a highly efficient amplifier similar to the those used in the EP500, EP600, and EP400 subwoofers. At loud or very loud levels, the amplifier efficiency reaches 90% to 95%.

The self-contained amplifier in each speaker produces 75 watts. The largest battery that Axiom will offer delivers 24 hours of continuous operation depending on the volume level and in tests has lasted 30 hours.

At full volume, which is really loud (and the sound is very clean), the battery lasted 13 hours.

2. The transmission system runs on the 2.4GHz band and is digital with error correction and talk-back to the transmitter for errors and linking.

The range of the speaker system is of course dependant on the materials in between the transmitter and the receiver but we have reached 150 ft or more through walls.

"Garbled" transmissions do not occur: the system either works perfectly or shuts down.

Any word as to when the wired version will start shipping?

Hi Stymie,

No word yet but I'll certainly post when I hear of a definite date.

Thanks for your comments Allen.

I look forward to seeing what Axiom will be offering. It appears that, as usual, Axiom has done their homework and is going to offer a superior product.

In the meanwhile, I need to complete my moving and packing, and get some speaker wires run for the pool!!!

Thanks Alan!

Just got another teaser from you guys.

Heh... I didn't even see the speaker in that.

How is that one mounted?

Looks to be too close to the wall for an FMB...

Stymie? Alan? Bueller?

No idea and good question. The pic was included in the Axiom Newsletter that just came out.
Posted By: alan Re: Preorder M3ti - 04/24/07 09:17 PM
Hey WhatFurrer,

Anyone who mentions "Bueller?" deserves an answer.

The Outdoor M3 speaker was cunningly supported for the photo by a person who shall remain nameless and the person was Photoshopped out. Or at least I think that's how it was done. I know that the speaker was not photoshopped into the rustic Northern image.

p.s. Ben Stein is now doing a new commercial for a product I can't recall. Something to do with eyeballs. Do you know that early in his career he was a speechwriter for Nixon?

I like the wire frame diagram on the page for the Algonquins. That's pretty cool. Ingenious design on the port, too.

I believe the product is Clear Eyes...

I had heard that same bit of information about our favorite celluoid teacher...

Thanks for the info.

Anyone receive their preorders yet?

I received an email saying that there had been a delay.
Posted By: Stymie Re: Preorder M3ti - 05/04/07 01:36 PM
I don't believe they start shipping until early next week.
Posted By: ratpack Re: Preorder M3ti - 05/06/07 01:28 AM
Yeah, you might be right. I'll have to find the email that I received from Axiom.

I did notice that my credit card has already been charged.
Posted By: ratpack Re: Preorder M3ti - 05/09/07 02:32 AM
The shipping email must be on one of my other computers and I don't have access to them right now. They are at my other house.

Anyone know if they have started shipping yet?
Posted By: Stymie Re: Preorder M3ti - 05/09/07 03:24 AM
Got an email that mine shipped out yesterday.
Posted By: Stymie Re: Preorder M3ti - 05/10/07 11:09 PM
Guess what I found at my door when I got home today?

I don't have them mounted in their final resting spots outside yet, but I do have them hooked up in my garage. I may just have to get a second pair to replace my old Cerwin Vegas out there. If my wife thinks she has a hard time getting me out of the garage now.......

I can't wait to get them mounted outside. I'll post up some pics, if someone will clue me on how to upload them.

I received one of the speakers yesterday, May 10th, and the other speaker today, May 11th.

I'm not sure how I am going to mount them. Guess that I will give a hard look this weekend.

I did get a laugh out of the instruction manual. Yes, I do read ALL of my instruction manuals. It says if you drop the speaker in the pool, remove the woofer, drain the water, and then the speaker will be ready to operate.

Looks like Axiom thought of everything!!!! LOL!!!
Posted By: Ken.C Re: Preorder M3ti - 05/11/07 10:53 PM
That's hilarious. I'm guessing that was Alan's idea.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Preorder M3ti - 05/12/07 03:48 AM
The real question is, if you continue to operate the submerged speaker, will it start to split the water molecules through electrolysis?
Posted By: JohnK Re: Preorder M3ti - 05/12/07 05:13 AM
Or if the music is powerful enough, will cold fusion result?
Posted By: ratpack Re: Preorder M3ti - 05/15/07 11:16 AM
John: don't know. If it works, then, maybe we have an answer to the energy crises!!!!

By the way, went down to Home Depot and bought a pair of sturdy "L" brackets to mount the speakers. They had a fair assortment. Unfortunately, the one's that I bought only came in white. So, a can of brown spray paint was the next purchase.
Posted By: ratpack Re: Preorder M3ti - 05/17/07 02:04 AM
Anyone install their speakers yet?

I bought a pair of sturdy brackets at Home Depot and gave them the first coat of brown paint this evening. They will need at least one more coat of paint and them I will install them, hopefully within the next couple of weeks. Then to run the speaker wires from the receiver to the outside.

I'll let everyone know what I think of them after I get a chance to try them out for a while.

I received my shipping email for my set of Algonquins yesterday...

Hopefully they will be arriving this weekend...but we shall see...DHL and all...At least they are in the 'States...

As they are plastic, I hope they arrive in one piece especially after the horror stories from the other thread about shipping companies...

Looking forward to hearing how they sound though...I have M60's and M22's but nothing from the M50 / M3 line...

Will someone please hand me the Windex and paper towels to get these nose prints off the front windows?

Counting the minutes...

At least you know that if DHL leaves the boxes out in the rain or drops them in a lake on the way to your door, they will still work flawlessly after you dump the water out of them.

Driving on the freeway on the way home from work today, I had my window down and heard a horrible clanking/screeching sound coming from the next lane. It was a DHL van with its front bumber hanging by a thread, bouncing and dragging on the ground. Dude shot past me probably doing 90 mph. Very nice!

Just adding to the horror stories, WhatFurrer. I hope your speakers arrive in one piece.

Did he have a pair of new Axiom speakers with the name whatfurrer on the side up on the dash in the hot sun right next to his burning cigarette and ever spilling coffee mug?

Thanks alot Sean...

That makes me feel soooooooo much better!

Just noticed your location: Chino, California, huh?

My Dad's parents used to live in Pomona and if memory serves me correctly, we had a relative that lived in Chino. Also had a relative that had a beach house in Malibu but never got to see the house and don't really remember the relative. But that was a long time ago...A lot has changed since the 70's, I'm sure.

LOL! Yeah, didn't want to mention that part and really dash Steve's hopes.

And, Steve, I was born in Pomona. It's not quite the vacation destination it used to be back in the day. There are some palm trees left, though. Chino smells better--if you like cows, that is.

Lol, I was raised in Covina and lived there from about 1960-1980, even back then unless I was going to the fair or to visit my Mom who worked at Cal Poly I stayed clear of Pomona. But then again my grandparents lived in Baldwin Park from the mid 50's thru the early 80's and I felt safe there, and that city would rank right along Pomona in lost vacation destinations.
Posted By: St_PatGuy Re: Incoming! - 05/18/07 02:47 AM
Very true, Michael. I used to play softball in Baldwin Park as part of a league at work. As for Pomona, I worked there for a number of years. On slow days we'd count the hookers that'd walk past the store. Ah, those were the days!

Truthfully, we'd see the same ones over and over again. Clockwork. There was one lady who had one arm, a bikini top, and a bad habit of standing in the middle of the street. I wish I was joking. . .
Posted By: WhatFurrer Re: Incoming! - 05/18/07 04:08 PM
Sean,

From what I can remember, my grandparents lived in a well established neighborhood which was rather nice. My grandfather owned a vineyard at the time, possibly in Chino, though not sure about that... I remember picking grapes and driving the tractor pulling trailers full of grapes. Have pictures to prove it.

I DO remember Chino and the predominant smell was cows.

Last time I was in California was visiting in Oceanside at a condo that my wife's boss owns...Car Dealer with a number of dealerships. Drove up to Anaheim to take my son and wife to Disneyland since neither had been there ever. We used to go to Disneyland or Knott's Berry Farm everytime when we would visit when I was a child.

My Mom's favorite ride was "It's a Small World..."

Miss her and those times...

Finally installed the wiring for the speakers. It took about 4 hours to install the long length of wire. Run it through the brick and block wall, and then finalize the installation.

Speaker sure sound good.

I'll take some pictures and post them when I have a little more time.
