Does anyone in Canada own one of these in Canada. Is there a Canadian reseller / distributer? If you ordered from the US, how much was shipping and duty (Ontario)?

Thanks

I have one and I love it! I bought mine for dirt via ebay but you might want to check out Slimdevices own web page. They currently have them for 50$ off, so $249, with free shipping (although maybe not to Canada).

In any case, with our dollar being better than theirs for a change, 249 looks pretty good. I'm considering a second for another room but I guess that would have to pass by my wife as my Christmas present.

The Slim website has them for $299 and with $30 shipping, I guess I missed the sale.

Going for $281 on Ebay with free shipping in the US, I need to find out if the same fo Canada.

Murph, are you using the DAC in the Squeezebox or in your HT processor? How does it sound?

You sure? Maybe you just didn't get to the sale page. Try this link.

Paul, it sites in my living room setup where I am using the DAC in the Squeezebox. It is hooked analogue to an older JVC Receiver and it sounds just great. FLAC files play clear and unbelievably detailed (which I accredit more to the M60s)when you have good source material.

I experimented with switching to fiber to the receiver and I could hear no difference either way. My DVD player however, is an older one I have there just to play CDs. It has a loose connection on one of it's analogue outputs so I let it use the digital out, as I have been too lazy to take it apart and fix.

Now, bear in mind, my JVC receiver doesn't seem to have a direct analogue pass through option so it is probably coming from the Squeezebox's DAC, only to be re digitized by the receiver's ADC, then back to analogue with some bass management thrown in. Soooo, is the comparison valid? probably not.

The important thing though, is that music sounds awesome. I'm convinced it's as good as when I play the original CD, at least for my ears and that's what counts.

Thanks Murph,

I was on the wrong site without knowing the promo code. I like the white better anyways.

If this thing does what you and everyone says it does, it will be a god-send, and for $250 a real no brainer. To be able to get to any song in my library of thousands of songs in only a few seconds, with out having to get up from my chair (if that doesn't sound lazy?), and to have it sound as good as the original.

I am placing this at the top of my Xmas list, right next to the Oppo DV-981HD (another under $250 no brainer item). Maybe if I keep being a good boy, Santa will bring me both.

OK, so I am ready to buy one of these things and I know its ment for audio.

However...

It would be even bettter if this thing also had a video section, such as HDMI, component, s-Video, or even Composite. That way you could not only play audio files, but video files from and view pictures. It would be a true one source for all media files. This would allow you to download movies from you computer and watch them where ever you squeezebox is located.

Any one else agree?

Agreed, but then it would cost a lot more.

Also, there are lots of cheap solutions to do this for low quality video but sending 480p for 'equivalent to DVD clarity' over wireless is tough to get right. Higher HD formats over wireless is a bigger challenge.

Wired is another matter but you could probably go 50' directly from your PC over HDMI (I think) anyways without adding another box.

Still, it will be nice someday when a cheap solution is at hand.

It's called Series 3 Tivo. I saw that Canada will get Tivo next month. Granted it's only the Series 2 but that does much of what you want, albeit non-HD.

Holy Crap, Tivo in Canada, for $199.

I guess this will give Starchoice something to think about considering their PVR (the DVR530) is still $699.

Cool
