I had some time to kill yesterday while my car was in the shop, so I wandered in to my local library, and right past a nice sized collection of CDs.

I decided to pick up something classical and settled on Toccata & Fugue in D minor, Lionel Rogg.

When I got home I popped it in the player. Pipe organ is NOT kind to those living in a concrete box.

The opening notes included an extended bass note exactly in tune with my room dimensions. I could feel the energy buildup as the note reverberated around my room! Ouch!!

This was also the first bit of music where I found the trebble quite unpleasant at times. Very piercing. To be clear, I know from my long audition at Axiom that this is due to room characteristics. I experienced none of this with the pipe organ music on ELP at that audition.

I think the reason it is so noticable with this disc is because the music has a lot of long/sustained notes that allow energy/reflections to build up in the room.

On the plus side, I was quite pleased with how well the EP350 produced the really low notes in the music (the ones that didn't go boom). Those long sustained deep bass notes also let me wander around the room and really accentuated the loaded vs unloaded areas in the room. It was quite interesting to walk through boomy areas into those where the bass all of a sudden became quite clear and textured.

I think I am going to use this disc when I put up some bass traps and do the sub crawl.

Yes, sounds like a great disc to test the bass traps effectiveness with room modes.

Cool.. sounds like just what I need to get a feel for what the bass will sound like in different parts of my room, etc.

I'll have to see if the Library's in Winnipeg have that.

I'm willing to bet there are any number of pipe organ discs that would work.
