For anyone who is interested... I haven't really looked through the list yet, but Amazon is offering a select list of 40 free MP3 downloads.

If you haven't shopped Amazon before for mp3s, they are DRM-free, 256KB. I generally still order CDs since getting my Axiom setup, but hey, I'll check out 40 free songs any day. ;\) Enjoy.

I've bought some Amazon.com MP3s lately, to get ahold of certain tracks I can't get on CD. I certainly prefer them to iTunes. I wish artists would stop giving iTunes exclusive tracks. Boo on DRM.

Same with me, once Amazon came out with their store I went almost exclusively to them for digital song downloads (higher quality MP3, no DRM, cheaper, and they have a little app that downloads the song and updates your iTunes library automatically. All this together made it a no brainer for me to switch).

I still buy the CDs in most cases when I like the whole album, but if there is just a particular song I like, Amazon is usually where I get it.

Many (though admittedly not enough) songs on iTunes are available DRM-free. Look for iTunes Plus tracks. They are encoded with AAC at 256kHz, so the quality is at least on par with Amazon's offerings.

I'm glad to see Regina Spektor's 11:11 has transitioned to iTunes Plus.

I like getting stuff from Amazon. Thanks for the link, Jason.

My kids have bought a bunch of regular iTunes (DRM) tracks that even they would like to be able to use on alternate devices. I understand that you can theoretically burn those tracks to a CD and then rip the CD. Further, I've heard mention of programs that spoof this process. Can any of you advise? I'm willing to buy an application to do this if it is reliable and saves me time.

Thanks for your help.

I've done the burning and ripping, but I didn't look too far into any programs like you're talking about. I would also be interested.

Tom, you should be able to burn your iTunes tracks to a CD-R to play on other devices through your iTunes menu. I burned mine on several CD's for our cars.

I will have to double check but I believe Winamp will import i-Tunes libraries and remove DRM. Maybe someone else out there could verify, I could be sometime before I get around to trying this. I do know Winamp was great at bypassing all the DRM on any protected cds's I have or was that due to AnyDVD I have running in the background.......
sadly "not available in Canada", I'll have to try ".ca" instead of ".com"
