I'm considering M22 ti's for 2 channel stereo listening. I listen to lots of opera, jazz, & classical. I have an 25 year old yamaha 1020 receiver. I have a 2 year old rotel 951 cd player. (my current speakers are 25 year old kef 103's.) I have no clue about selecting a subwoofer and if my receiver matters in the choice. I want to spend what i need to optimze the sound quality, no more/no less. What subwoofers are most compatible with the M22? Dharma, I use my M22s in a stereo system for classical music without a sub. I've measured the in-room bass response as usable, although diminished, down to 40hz. This is adequate for nearly all my music(not the organ beginning Also Sprach Zarathustra, though). You didn't mention if you were using your 103s with the KEF Bass Kube; if not, you might also be satisfied with the low bass from the M22s. Consider getting the M22s alone first and seeing if you really want more bass.
If you do, and you're willing to go as high as $600 for the P200, I'd rather consider another list of suspects in that area, such as the Axiom EP350, Hsu VTF-2 and SVS 25-31. Your receiver wouldn't directly matter in that the sub would have its own amp, but if you're going to use your receiver you might want to consider a sub with a filtered output for the M22s, since your receiver would send them a full-range signal with no crossover.

I used a pair of M22s and M22 like Michaura M55s in my stereo system. I had an 8" Velodyne (CHT80) which was quick and musical but didn't go much below 35Hz. I just picked up a subwoofer kit from partsexpress.com, the Vance Dickason 10" Titanic, put it together (a no brainer - the cabinet is already constructed, you just have to put in the damping material, screw in the driver and the amp. This amp is very, very impressive. Tight, fast and musical. Goes way down. No chuffing, no rumbling, just sounds like the M22 like speakers go all the way down to about 20-25Hz. Cost was $350 delivered.

BTW, on my stereo system, I listen mostly to jazz, female vocals, Celtic crooning (Loreena McKennett) and Clapton like blues/rock. Sounds terrific. You'll love the M22s they are great speakers, but do need a bit of help down low.
John, Thanks very much for your advice. Unfortunately, I don't have the KEF Base Kube, and I'm keeping the 1020. I might start with the M22's alone. You suggested a sub with a filtered output for the M22's - I'm out of my depth here. Do the subs you mentioned have filtered output? thanks again. dharmatone
Multi-channel home theater receivers have a sub output which sends bass below about 80 or 100hz to the sub and they simultaneously roll off the response below that frequency to the main speakers. The advantage is that some of the bass load is taken off of the main speakers and the receiver amps and may allow them to be a bit cleaner in the range that they do handle. A stereo receiver doesn't have such a provision, so it would send a full-range signal to the mains if they're directly connected to it. Some subs have a high-level connection to power the mains which filters out part of the frequencies below 80-100hz before sending them out. Of the three that I happened to mention only Dr. Hsu's site mentions that the VTF-2 has a filter at about 90hz on its speaker outputs. It may be a bit premature to be considering this point before you've decided if you really want a sub. Also, it isn't that crucial a matter and many users run their speakers full-range even when they have a sub
I have a new Yamaha RX-V2300 Receiver, and M22ti's were my choice. I too listen to Jazz/Classical/ ect.... I have found my M22ti's and Axiom EP175 do a fine job! At low level Norah Jones still shakes the house! LOL! I do not believe I need any more Bass then what I have. This is just my Experience. I am very happy! Good Luck!

Except for my HT system, I only use one sub per system. In the HT system use a pair (Klipsch 1640 watt LF10 and Velodyne CHT100) through the stereo sub outs from an Outlaw ICBM-1 bass manager) I went with 2 subs in that system because for some reason it was easier to integrate than a single sub. Actually smoothes things out for multi channel music (DVD Audio and SACD), but does tend to reveal loose pieces and structural issues when playing movies.

That's true, however, sometimes I have the systems all playing the same digital cable music station. Probably twirls that metal disc in the electric meter pretty nicely.

I just have a question regarding the Vance Dickason Titanic sub. I've found one pre-built on ebay for $175, which is definitely a steal even compared to the kit price. But, how easily could a person royal screw up the install? Is there anything I should worry about in particular?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
