I've never bought stands for speakers before and I'm planning on buying the m22's. Do the speakers just sit on top of the stand or is there a simple way to perm/temp attach them? One might be placed in a fairly busy location. Also can I drill into the back of a Q4 (for mounting purposes) without damaging or nulifying the waranty.

It doesn't directly answer your question but it's good reading. To answer your question, I'm sure you can find a way to mount the speaker to a stand permanently, but make sure they're good, heavy stands (fillable if possible) or they're going to vibrate when you play music loud enough (as mine do, creating an annoying sound).
GASP.....this is music, you MUST adjust your way of life to suit the music!!!!!
Just kidding! You can temp. attach the speakers to the stands using Audio Tak, a putty like subsatnce that never dries. It is available at many steroe stores, or online.
The magazine mentioned in a post is a very good source of information. They also carry the Tak.

The stands come with small rubber feet for the speaker to sit on. You can also drill into the bottom of the speakers without damaging them and fasten the speakers directly to the top of stand for that heavy traffic area. Further on the comment about the solid post in this thread, the CSS2 stands have solid posts except for the wire management hole. The SS16 stand has a hollow post but it can be easily filled if you so desire. You can drill into the back of your QS4s without voiding your warranty. Please use a guide on the drill so as to not penetrate more than 3/4".

What would you use as filler for the stand? Something dense obviously - sand would work but it could get messy. Any other suggestions?
You are correct, anything heavy and dense. Most fillable stands recommend sand, or the like. There used to be stands that came with a purchased option of metal shot pellets.
Use a funnel, fill the stands and seal the holes. As long as you are not playing rugby with the in the field of play, they should be fine.
