...so I like have these old Advent 3's (bookshelf speakers) and basically they've been sitting around collecting dust for ~3 years now. Tonite I decided to hook em up because I'm planning on making them my rear speakers in a 7.1 setup...

Well my current speakers are something I threw together myself years ago when I was in high school, I've been to poor and too unmotivated to do anything about them until now (plans for Axioms). So I plop the Advent's on top of these old monsters and hook em up. WOW I haven't given these speakers a good listening to in over 10 years. They aren't perfect but they are pretty damn good for something that was left for dead.

Silly me.

Nice to find gold in the back of your closet, huh?

Somebody's gotta ask--why did you stop using them in the first place?
Posted By: INANE Re: Silly me! - 06/04/04 04:18 AM
They were actually my dad's and somehow I ended up with them when I moved out years ago. I think I was using them for surround back then as well.

It's almost upsetting to me that I hadn't even considered usign them till tonite.

I'm sure it is. I would feel that way too.

hehe, that would be nice

Anyone know what happened to Advent? I was able to find on some 'classic speaker forum' that these bookshelf's were org made back in 1976

I found a Rado Jubile diamond Swiss watch the other day. Anybody interested? It's too small for my wrist (and likely yours too, bigjohn).

I think they still make Advent speakers. Costco had some recently, if I'm not mistaken. They weren't very expensive.

I don't know a ton about Advent, but I know it was started by Henry Kloss, who was a very well respected audio designer. That sounds like it may have been towards the end of his stint there, but when he was designing those speakers, they were considered to be very, very good.

A lot of people talk about stacking 2 sets of them - the top one upside down. This sounds goofy to me, but some vintage nuts claim it just sounds awesome. I won't judge until I hear it.

I'd say you've probably got yourself a pretty nice pair of speakers... if they were designed by Kloss, then they might even have some vintage collector's appeal as well.

I have a pair of Advent mini's that I use in my bedroom. They are incredible sounding speakers for their size and what I paid for them. I also got some Advent outdor speakers for about $50 per pair on Ebay. I tried to look up the company's website, but had no luck. Has Advent gone out of business?

Found this link while searching the good ol net... I believe its taken from some article written in 1973. They picture 'The Double Advent System' which looks a LOT like the Advent/3's I have.

I can vouch for the Advent mini's. They are hansom little speakers with wood top and bottom plates. Very smooth and easy to listen to. Too bad they are so...mini. They are great for a tiny space.

The were acquired by Recoton who went bankrupt last year. The recent Advents seemed to focus on outdoor and wireless. The Advent, Jensen, and Acoustic Research lines were acquired by Audiovox. Other than a news release last July, about new Jensen and Advent products, I haven't seen anything develop. It appears from the news that they were going to use the Advent name to develop high end consumer level speakers. Acoustic research was notably absent in the news release.
