I figured we need a matching Led Zep thread since we have one for Floyd. Anyone have the How the West was won DVD...it's 5.1 and pretty good. I'll admit, I haven't watched/listened to it all that much since getting it though since there is just so much music there. I need to break it down and just watch parts at a time.

Um, when i get the new receiver (which one yet, I dont know) and the Axioms, I will throw in my Megadeth DVD and give them a good pounding.

a few weeks back, i watched/listened to the 'SLIPKNOT' 5.1 dvd, live from london arena.. pretty intense.. their drummer is insane.. i have never seen anyone double pedal that fast..

the 'alice in chains' unplugged is really great also.

as far as zep, their old recordings are not all that good sounding.. and i played the page/coverdale cd with the yellow turn around sign on the cover(cant remember the name of the album).. anyway, that cd sounded rather harsh.. like someone had all the treble dials cranked on the mixer board.. dont get me wrong, i like zep.. but, someone needs to seriously go remaster their original recordings before they will be considered to be at the top of any of my "must hear" cd's...just my opinion...

I'd have to agree with you, bigjohn: Led Zep's CDs just don't sound good at all. I'm a big Led Zeppelin fan, but I've never been impressed with the sound quality of their recordings. I, too, am hoping for some re-masterings of their old stuff, but I'm not holding my breath.

I've got a couple of old albums on CD and I also have the Unledded "No Quarter" album. Do not buy that "no Quarter" album if you own Axioms. Terrible harsh recording, you can hear the age and wear and tear in Plant's voice, and it just plain sucks. Really, really, really bad disc - almost as bad as "Jagged Little Pill".

Page remastered all of the CD's a few years ago, so I doubt they'll get anoher treatment.
The Led Zeppelin DVD sounds amazing, particularly the earliest show, with them at their simplist, and probably their best. It really sounds like you're right there.

The problem with hoping for better sounding mixes of their albums is that there just isn't much to work with. They were recorded rather cheaply, and I believe a lot of LZ II and III were recorded while they were on the road, in whatever studio they could find. I've even heard stories of songs being recorded in stairwells of venues they were playing in. I just don't think the source material is good enough to allow much improvement.

I've got the How The West Was Won CD, but not the DVD. The CD sounds remarkably good - but (as everyone else has said) the rest of their catalog sounds like dirt.

Yeah, I'm a huge Zep fan too. I remember being so excited to get my Axioms so I could crank up "Whole Lotta Love," and sure enough, when I did, it was like "ouch!" At first I thought, man, these Axioms suck! But then I listened to some Dave Matthews on them and was blown away. As I soon learned, that's what a detailed, neutral speaker is all about.

Anyway, the new Zep DVD absolutely rocks, so if you gotta get your Zep fix, go with that. Listen to the CD's on your car stereo.

bigjohn, do a Google search for a guy by the name of Tim Waterson. If you think Joey Jordison from Slipknot is fast, wait till you see Tim Waterson go! It's freaky!
