Well, after a long list of speakers and even some nice ones here right now I get to try out a set of Axiom M2i speakers here. Just made a deal yesterday, they are used in maple, but the price was right for sure. Right now I have a set of Dahlquist QX5A which I think are great, and also a set of Angstrom Modular 3 which are also very nice. It should be interesting....

Some other speakers I have owned include Bohlender A1, Mission M71i, Omage Av21, Dahlquist QX4, QX5, QX6, Infinity Primus 150.

Will do. Forgot, I also had the Wharfedale Diamond 8.1., and Athena B2.
I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the Angstroms.

That I can tell you right now. They are....

Very well built. Excellent actually, they weigh in at 20lbs per speaker!
The tweeter is very smooth yet revealing, the bass it super tight and has plenty of punch. It does not go too deep, but what is there is excellent. Overall soundstage is very nice, although not quite as expansive as the Dahlquist QX5A. Midrange is fantastic.....I mean awesome. Overall a really nice set of speakers to listen to, non fatigueing to my ears. I don't even think this set is fully broken in yet, I only have about 25 hours on them now. The word that jumps to mind most with the Angstrom is refined.

They are for sale if you are interested, $350 shipped. I have a full matching set for my Dahquist so that's why I went with those in the end....it was close though, I actually changed my mind several times. In fact, even right now I am wondering if I should be selling the Angstroms, LOL.

I see you are from Western Canada too!

Hey dvdvideo,

Would you share some comments on how the Axiom M2i's compared with your Mission M71i's?

I currently have Mission M72s wich I really enjoy, I'm shopping for new speakers now and am considering the M22ti's but so far haven't had luck finding anybody in my area to demo the axioms. Getting an idea of how they compare with a speaker i'm familiar with would be very valuable to me.

thanks,
s h a w n L.

Yep, will do to the best of my ability. It's been about a year since I had my M71i. It is surprising that despite the massive internet there still seems to be a lack of speaker reviews. Tons of "I need bookshelf speaker advice" threads though!

Got the M2i today, early! Will do some listening this weekend.....starting now.....
4_eyes,

I've got a pair of M22Tis, M2is, and a VP100 in Richmond, BC if you would like to have a listen. Email or PM me if you would like to arrange something.

First up, vs the Mission M71i......much different speaker. Doesn't image quite as well as the Axiom, and has a totally different tonality. The Mission had a emphasis on thick vocals, which they deliver well. The Axiom is lean and quick. Overall between those 2 I prefer the Axiom.

Next up.....my overall impressions of the M2i and how they compare to the Dahquist QX5A.....

Well built, smaller than I expected. Nice in the maple, although I admit in general I'm only so-so on how axiom speakers look. Covers are cheap and crappy, but who needs em anyhow I guess.

Very lean speaker.....voices are up front and concise, to the point of being in almost an artificial bubble kinda like the infinity primus in that regard. The sound seems to focus in the middle, with not enought overall spread. (with sub on or off) I can see why some people call this speaker harsh, even though it really isn't overly harsh.
I should go on to say the mids do sound well balanced in tone, and overall it's still a very nice speaker. Very picky person talking here.

To my ears, the QX5a go deeper, offer more mid-bass, image better, wider and deeper with more seperation between instruments, have more detailed treble (although similar in timbre...slightly softer) That's not to say the Axiom sound bad.....just not as good as the QX5A. Also I prefer the Angstrom Modular 3 to the M2i. To be fair, we are talking about speakers that are more expensive too, the Dahlquist sell for $550 Canadian, the Angstrom for $800 Canadian.

I'm sure the M22i would sound better, but how much better? The mids would fill out, the bass a bit punchier......but doubtfull it would be enought to sway me. To be honest I'm a little surprised, I thought with a sub these M2i would be a lot closer in a head to head vs the QX5a. Chalk it up to personal preference again rearing it's ugly head again! I guess we will see if further break in makes a difference. (have about 30+ hours on them)

There's a post comparing the 22s and 2s going on somewhere around here.. I think the 22s might make more of a difference than you think.

I suppose one never knows till they try it in person. One person't 50% better is another's 10% better. Most of the reviews I read said the M2i was within 90% of the M22ti, as long as you pair it with a decent sub.

Anyhow, I forgot to mention, the Amp I used for listening was a Harmon AVR125.

True... but it sounds as if that 10% difference is in the area that we care about a lot...
