Hi all! Since you guys are such nice folk around here, I thought I would ask you your opinions on older receivers and how they would perform with Axiom speakers. I would like to redo my stereo setup in my bedroom to include Axiom M22's and a different receiver. Currently, I have an old early 90's model Sony receiver with huge ugly boomy speakers from the 80's...all which I'm sure are not that great. I had replaced a similar Sony ealier when I bought my first Denon for the living room. What an improvement!

Anyway, I was researching stereo only receivers on the net and others mentioned that a lot of older receivers from the 70's produced nice clean power (not hissy like my previous Sony's). Do you guys have experiences with these older receivers (please list models) or do you think I should just buy brand new. I wasn't looking to spend a lot of money and I know there are great buys on ebay for these older receivers. They look kind of cool too. Most importantly though is that it must perform well with the Axioms.

Thanks! I always appreciate the advice here.

I have a Marantz 2220B and a Toshiba SA-775, and previously owned a Marantz 2252B (my favorite receiver). They were all pretty good; I give the edge to the Marantzes on the basis of looks and versitility (esp the 2252...sigh, all metal face...)

All 3 were retired due to crackly connections, channels going out, non working inputs, etc. That's the main issue with those older receivers; they're too often in bad condition. They can be fixed, but at least with the 2252, it had been fixed about 4 times with the same problems coming back again.

Sure were pretty, though...

if you are looking for just a straight stereo use, 2 channel receiver, there are lots of new, very powerful options avail.. i dont know specific model numbers, but with the HT receiver boom, the simplier 2 ch amps are cheap, and readily avail.

look on ebay, or do some genral searches to see whats out there..

I have a Pioneer SX-850, a gorgeous silver faced, toggle switched, button festooned, gyro tuning knobbed beauty which sounds great with Axes.

no ,thats not the one.mine didnt have that many knobs, but it looks like it was made around the same time.its funny ,when that was new ,it was really cool,a few years later,it starts to look like an old piece of crap, and then a few years later, its really cool again and you wish you never got rid of it

I have an old silver faced, short infested, left channel only working Technics which I purchased new in 1879. I loved it when it was alive. I have it stuffed in a cabinet in the basement. I can't seem to bring myself to have the funeral.

Cool, those early Technics units are real collectors items. Anything before WW1 is gold

Hi,

I don't know how 'low' or 'high' is your budget. If you're an 'engineer/technician' (means you can fix the receiver if problems arise), then you may get some bargain old receiver. If not, you better go for new one or the possible repair cost will not justify your spending.

By thw way, I still have my Pioneer VSX-9500 bought in 1989. It still works fine but it only has Dolby ProLogic, surround, can't make use of the current DVD audio feature like 5.1 6.1 7.1, Dolby ProLogic II etc.

Get yourself an early Christmas gift.
