Hi, I was looking into getting the M22's for my new house, the problem is that with the layoutof stuff in the living/listening room I need to wall mount them 51" above the floor. So the top of the speaker would be about 71", with tweeter a couple inches lower, well above ideal ear height.

I'm looking for opinions regarding this - I would mount them with the metal bracket which can tilt downward. Should I look into another speaker system? I would plan on getting a subwoofer to go with the M22's.

Thanks for any and all advice!

How would wall mounting a different type of speaker 51" from the ground be any better?

If you need to wall mount them that high, be sure that the tweeters are aiming at the sweet spot in your room (your ears while seated)

Good luck.

A smaller speaker would have a lower tweeter so rather then at 71" I could maybe squeeze another 7-8" (for a 13" vs. the M22 20" height).
But the M22 is a good size and I like the reviews I've read so I was hoping to make them work in my room.

The M22 is a great speaker and I enjoy mine greatly, but the reason it is more expensive that the M3 is that is produces such a clean and nice mid-range. Because of the height that you are having to mount your speakers, the perceivable difference between the cheaper M3 and the M22 would be much harder to notice so honestly I wouldn't spend the extra cash. The M3's will also not be as tall on the wall mounted stands. (And as a side note, the M22 is a 17 pound speaker so wall mounting brackets would have to be very strong and secured properly to a stud)

I'd email Axiom...but how about flipping the M22ti upside down.

Matt, welcome. A combination of a slight downward tilt of the M22s so that the tweeters point at your ears and possibly also positioning them upside-down, as Craig suggested, should work very well.

I'm curious as to how "turning them upside down" works. Wouldn't the imaging be backwards? I mean if the vocals are supposed to be sent to the center, then if they are turned 180 degrees, wouldn't that send the signal in the opposite direction? Can someone please explain this.

Matt, you misunderstood something. The suggestion was merely to turn the mains upside-down, which of course has nothing to do with what material the receiver sends to the center.

Yes, I understood that part, but the material will be sent the way it was encoded right? So I assume that the decoder assumes the speakers are positioned in a certain way. If that position is altered, then doesn't that affect they way the sound is presented? What am I missing?

The decoder only cares about where a speaker is in the room, not exactly how it is positioned. YOu can think of each speaker as being a single point source (e.g. one speaker cone) to simplify it in your mind.

Ahh...

As far as I know the relative position of "main vs center vs surround" is important when encoding but the relative position of woofer vs. tweeter in the same speaker is not important.

The idea behind turning them upside down is just that high frequencies are more directional than low frequencies so having your ears not centered on the woof/mids won't make anywhere near as much difference as having your ears not centered on the tweeter.

I always ran my speakers upside down whenever I had to mount them high, always felt that was better than the alternatives.

My M60s are right-side up 'cause they are on the floor, and the M2s are right-side up 'cause I finally have stands of the right height

In short, Matt, it makes no difference in what you've raised whether a speaker has the tweeter above or below the woofer.

Okay, so by turning them upside down, the imaging is still pinpoint accurate? I'm thinking I might try this myself to see, but that would involve reversing work that took awhile to do. I always thought that the way each channel was manipulated was that vocals sent to the right channel were diffused "inward" meaning left, and the vocals sent to the left channel were diffused rightward, thus having a centered vocal image. So my logical thinking is that if you reverse the positioning, the speaker doesn't know any better and sends the information the way it was told. Meaning if they are turned upside down, the data would leave the speaker in the opposite direction and the vocals would diffuse outward and in affect not create a center image. I guess I'm wrong, but I would like better clarification.

Matt, there's no directional "diffusion" other than by toeing the speakers in or out to various degrees. The data leaves the speaker coming straight out, not tilted to one side or the other. Also, of course, most speakers are designed to be used on either the left or right interchangeably.

I always felt I got slightly more accurate imaging when I turned the speakers upside down, but that was probably a result of having my ears more in-line with the tweeters...
