I was thinking about putting some of my favorites on a disc and mailing it out to friends and family. Y'all interested in a copy? PM me your address and I'll see what I can do.
BTW, reciprocation would be very cool.
Posted By: Zarak Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/08/05 02:12 AM
It might depend on the tracklist somewhat...unless it is all unfamiliar stuff. Interesting this came up actually. We lost a good radio station in Philly recently, and I have been thinking how much radio sucks here now and that I need to get some new CD's and into some new music. I am currently listening to the Radio 1 Rock Show that Trent Reznor of NIN hosted a couple of nights ago. Hopefully, I'll like some of the stuff and get some ideas from there. Almost none of it is stuff I would hear on the radio around here.

Consider yourself PM'ed.

i sent a PM..

Posted By: dmn23 Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/08/05 01:54 PM
I like this idea very, very much. I love being turned on to new music, so I'll jump in, too. But I think reciprocation is key. I'll be sending a mix to BigWill, and if anyone else would like a copy, just send me one of yours. PM me for details.
Posted By: bigwill2 Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/08/05 03:52 PM
I should be able to get Vol I out in the mail by Monday. Be forewarned, I plan to include a wide range of music.
Posted By: bigjohn Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/08/05 04:19 PM
i sent the PM to the regular bigwill, not the alter ego..

did ya get it? just wanna make sure.

Posted By: bigwill2 Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/08/05 04:41 PM
I'll get it when I go home tonight. My laptop here at work had to be reimaged - and I have no idea what my original password is - so I re-registered. Requested the old password from Axiom, but they never sent it - probably because my email has changed.
Posted By: bigjohn Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/08/05 05:00 PM
cool.. i have an 'interesting' cd i will send you.. info is in the PM..

Posted By: spiffnme Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/08/05 05:13 PM
Sounds like a fun idea. I'll see if I can't find the time to put together a mix too. I'll let you know when I finally get it done.

Posted By: AshBoomstick Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/08/05 09:24 PM
man, i'm surprised nobody's come up with this before. it's be a great idea; plus you could also do CD's with local bands, or mix it in with the faves.
Posted By: BigWill Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/09/05 01:08 AM
Holy Crap! My mailbox is full of PMs! I feel popular again (like before the politics thread).
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/09/05 05:34 AM
You might revise that feeling after you start getting a mailbox full of hippie music.
Posted By: BigWill Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/10/05 12:07 AM
Yeah, please refrain from reciprocating with crappy music.
Thanks to everybody for expressing interest.
I'm having a hard time narrowing down my collection of faves to just one disc. I think the classical is going to get largely axed, as most of my faves are pretty long (sorry JohnK). I also decided not to include stuff that EVERYBODY has heard, but which is still very cool (The Who, Floyd, etc...).
And the first installment may be a little late being delivered - response has been overwhelming. I didn't realize there were so many polka fans out there!
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/10/05 06:38 AM
You've inspired me to try and put together a disc as well. I've spent the last few days just kicking around song ideas to include. As you said, even though there are a great number of terrific songs, I don't want to make a mix disc full of stuff everybody has already heard. Whenever I finally get a mix finally settled on, I'll offer it up for free as well.

Posted By: BigWill Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/10/05 03:27 PM
Thanks spiff. I've been wanting to hear that Propellor-head stuff you always rave about.
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/10/05 04:10 PM
There'll definately be a track from them on there.

When I'm done, we can swap discs. I find a lot of new music I like from people who stop by to demo the axioms. It'll be cool to hear what some fellow Axiomites like to listen to.

Posted By: spiffnme Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/11/05 07:23 AM
Alright...the mix is done. Anyone who wants a copy just pm me. It's a pretty diverse mix, and I tried to shy away from the stuff you've likely ever heard on the radio. It was pretty hard to keep the track list down to a managable size...something that would fit on one disc.

Posted By: BrenR Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/11/05 08:02 AM
Well, I'd offer a disc, but I might as well just make one and give it to Sid.

I definately don't have the same tastes as the classical, blues, c*ck rock and arena rock fans around here.

Posted By: spiffnme Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/11/05 09:18 PM
So Bigwill...should we let people know the playlist here on the boards or just send the list with the disc?

Posted By: bigwill2 Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/11/05 09:25 PM
I'll be posting mine here to save on ink. Almost done, too.
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/11/05 09:36 PM
Sounds like a good plan. I'll post the track list of my disc tonight. I'm curious to know how many cd purchases our mix exchange creates.
Posted By: Zarak Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/11/05 10:22 PM
Not to rain on any parades, cause this sounds pretty good and I would like to hear some new music from everyone here as well, but how is doing this different then putting some mp3's for people to download? I seem to remember some negative posts about people shouldn't be doing that a while back. (regardless of RIAA opinion, which really doesn't factor into it for most people anyway)
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/11/05 11:03 PM
That's why I'm curious about the resulting cd purchases. What the RIAA doesn't understand is that a tremendous amount of cd sales are the direct result of mp3 downloads and cd trades. I'd say nearly 50%+ of the cd's I've purchased in the past 2-3 years are due to the fact that I heard a cool mp3, or someone burned a few cool tracks for me. The reason they're losing money is because they're promoting CRAP music.

<end rant>

Amen, brother. Preach it!
Posted By: BigWill Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/12/05 03:37 AM
That's what I figured too. There is no way an artist or label would be upset over users burning ONE track to distribute among friends. Very good promotional tool, IMO.
Posted By: BigWill Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/12/05 03:38 AM
Oh yeah. I'm having some trouble with my CD creator software. I was most of the way through when the software reported output errors and inexplicably ruined the whole disc. Bizarre.
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/12/05 07:52 AM
The first two copies of my mix burned tonight and will ship tomorrow! I actually like the mix...I'll throw a copy in my car as well.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/13/05 08:40 AM
OK. I just finished "pmbuko's AxFoMix #1" and I'm burning two copies to be ready to send out in reciprocity for the two mixes I have incoming. (I'm assuming the incoming mixes will have return addresses on them??)

I will also send a copy to anyone who PM's me their address. I'll respond to your PM with a complete track/artist/album listing.
Posted By: bigwill2 Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/13/05 04:36 PM
Save one for me! At the rate I'm going mine will be done in August.
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/13/05 04:38 PM
I think my mix is one "sale" away from being certified platinum. (Platinum is 8 units, right?)

Posted By: pmbuko Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/13/05 05:57 PM
I don't think give-aways are considered in the count towards platimum status. Now, if we go out and buy at least one album going off the tracks on your disk, THAT would count.
Posted By: bigwill2 Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/14/05 04:45 PM
Hey, hey, hey! Crazy mix, spiff!
There are some real gems on that disc (and a couple that had me scratchin' my head ). I'm gonna have to put some crazy music on mine in order to not appear too staid.
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/14/05 05:17 PM
I'd love to hear your impressions of each track. Which ones did you like? Which one's had you scratching your head?

Posted By: bigwill2 Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/14/05 05:45 PM
I don't have the 3 PAGES! of liner notes you supplied with me here, but I liked the opening jazz track. Nice recording, nice song, I wish I wasn't in the kitchen when I put the disc in. The Dirty Dozen song is very cool; raucous, sexy stuff that everybody is going to dig.

Then came the techno stuff right? Propellorheads was a great test of my speakers - really showed off the bass. I liked the song quite a bit, but it and some of the other "sounds like the disc is stuck" songs had the wife a little edgy. I did feel like I was at a rave. The baby was pretty dumbfounded.
Kristine W (?) can certainly sing and that was a nice quality recording, too.
I don't care for Sting too much, sorry.
The last song - the Moby track with the incredibly long title - was very pretty, lush, complex. It reminded me of DeBussey, but with modern electronic instruments and a repetitive line. Impressionist music, right?
I liked it, truly. Thanks for the time and obvious care and thought in putting it together. I'm going to give it a more thorough listening, from the sweet spot, ASAP.
Posted By: Ken.C Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/14/05 05:51 PM
I'd love to play with this, but I'm afraid my tastes are a little...pedestrian, mainstream even.
Posted By: bigjohn Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/14/05 05:52 PM
i was just gonna let y'all know that the discs i am sending are not going to be the quality of recordings to 'test' your system.. i thought the original idea was to make a cd of music that i like, not necessarily that sounds great. i hope y'all arent disappointed. the stuff i am sending out has a definite country vibe, but its Texas country, so its different, at least to me it is. the main thing to focus on in the songs is the writing, and how the words make you feel. its more about the attitude.

i will feel stupid if i make something up, and then you just toss it in the trash. but, that is a distinct possibility, so just keep an open mind.

Posted By: spiffnme Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/14/05 06:21 PM
I tried to pick songs which I both liked, and were good samples to really enjoy what great speakers we all have.

I had a blast putting it together, and will work on making a V.2 soon!

Posted By: bigwill2 Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/14/05 08:59 PM
"I tried to pick songs which I both liked, and were good samples to really enjoy what great speakers we all have."

Ditto that. If it sounds good I like it.

BTW, all the tech geeks here at work suggest, a) that I slow down my burning rate to decrease errors, b) that I may need new CD-ROM and burner drives, c) might just want to buy a new tower for my home PC. Any smokin' deals out there right now?
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/14/05 09:01 PM
Not sure if you have a PC Club near you, but they tend to have some pretty good deals. Roger builds them from scratch, so our last three have all come from parts that we bought from PC Club...though they have pre-built systems as well.

Posted By: bigwill2 Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/14/05 09:06 PM
I'm an idiot and my fingers are like brats - no building stuff here. I have been told that swapping CD drives isn't hard, but, again, I'm an idiot and I don't have lots of time on my hands anymore.
Pentium 4, 2.4Ghz, 80 Gigs (?) is what has been recommended.
Posted By: tomtuttle Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/14/05 09:09 PM
Guys, I want very much to get in on this deal, but I've got the Pinewood Derby this weekend and lots of other stuff going on, so it will take me a few weeks at best to reciprocate. When you're in burning mode, if it is convenient to make a copy for me, that would be great. Like Ken, though, I'm afraid that I may not be able to expand your horizons much.
Posted By: Ken.C Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/14/05 10:43 PM
Are you using name brand CDs? That should improve reliability. I'd also slow down the speed a notch or two. If you keep burning coasters, well, the new drive is probably a good idea. You can get 'em real cheap from ZipZoomFly or NewEgg (both reputable online dealers).
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/15/05 12:15 AM
I received your mix today, too, but I was at Tharkun's all day and haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. Notes and impressions to come later.
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/15/05 12:35 AM
You should have played it at Tharkuns! I can only imagine some of those tracks through DTS:Neo6 on his system.

Oh my...I think I just wet myself.

Thanks for the tips, I'll try the slower speed now.
Posted By: AdamP88 Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/15/05 02:27 AM
Actually, spiff, we listened to the Harnoncourt Beethoven #7 2nd movement for starters (I've got that set, too). It was, to say the least, mighty impressive.
Posted By: St_PatGuy Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/15/05 03:08 AM
Spiff, listened to your mix last night. Great sounding stuff. Really enjoyed Charlie Haden, and the Dirty Dozen made me smile--very fun track. The instrumental Moby song at the end was really relaxing and soothing. I think I liked that one the most. I'll spend more time with it on the weekend and give you more feedback. Excellent sound on the cd, and you really went above and beyond on the "info pack." Thanks again.
Posted By: bigwill2 Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/19/05 06:26 PM
Update: I have a kid in class to whom I am paying a nominal fee to burn the discs. They should be in the mail by Saturday!
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/19/05 06:28 PM
Looking forward to it!

btw...listened to my mix in the car yesterday. Did I mention you should play the Propellerheads song REALLY loud? You've also got to be in the right mood to listen to it. If you're feeling mellow, that's not the right time to listen.

Posted By: BigWill Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/20/05 04:30 AM
I must be getting old - I feel mellow pretty much all the time now.

Posted By: BigWill Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/20/05 04:35 AM
Oh, and I had to leave some songs off the disc that I really wanted to include. Stuff by Handel, Rachmaninov, Nat King Cole, SRV with his brother, a whole bunch of reggae that probably nobody would like anyways, Loreena McKennit, John Hiatt, Dick Dale and some other surf music guys. Hopefully all the songs will fit on one disc, otherwise Long Beach Dub All0Stars will get cut, too.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/20/05 04:54 AM
spiffnme, I had the chance to listen to your mix the other day. The Charlie Haden track is awesome, and the DDBB track is a great foot stomper. (Is that an official category -- foot-stomping music? ) The electronic music took me more than one listen to get into, though. The Hybrid tracks have some pretty cool texture. The Propellerheads will take me still longer to appreciate, I think. It's so long that I find myself wanting to fast forward parts of it -- especially repetitive parts. However, if I had a speedy convertible and a relatively uncrowded freeway ahead of me, I could envision myself blasting it and tearing up the asphalt. Is that what you meant by non-mellow mood?

Now on to Orbital. The intense, driving drum'n'bass line builds up a tension and suspense that, unfortunately never gets released. Talk about blue ears....

I have to admit I don't care at all for the dissonant synthesizer chords in the Christine W song, but her voice is amazingly soulful.

The Groove Armada track is my favorite of the electronic tracks. I can't quite put my finger on why. I probably has something to do with the mellowness and its use of real instrument samples. Nice interweaving loops in this one.

The Beethoven needs no critique.

Dead Can Dance. She sounds possessed!! But that's not a bad thing. A lot of great texture here, too, but the slight pitch bends in the horn are inexplicable.

Sting. This one is not listed in your included literature. I haven't heard this version of his song. What album is it from?

Superior. I liked it, but I can't give you specifics because I couldn't rip it to my iPod (which I brought with me to Dallas).

Moby. Shimmery. Calming. Reflective. Kinda like water. I like.

hmmm, i've been kind of absent from the forum over the past couple of weeks (we're out of the deep-freeze here so I've been enjoying our last 2 weeks of summer )

This is a great idea, I'm going to have to get on this. Problem is the compooter crashed and we need to install a new power supply!?!

Any of you southern neighbours concerned about international shipping? I'm more than happy to return the favour when the 'pooter is up and runnin' again.

Hey Bren, i'd love a copy of your faves by the way (if you were up to burning one).

I received Peter's disc today and Craig's a couple of days ago.

Peter, I haven't had a chance to listen to your disc yet, but Thank You! I'm looking forward to it!

Craig, excellent music! I'll write more when I've listened to the discs more, but I'm already anticipating some new music purchases based upon hat you sent!

Question for either/both of you: Where did you find the artist info? It seems more "organized" than the type of stuff I normally see on Amazon....??

I listened to Spiff's again today in the car. I think he drank the punch, too.

And here’s my play list:

5. The Skatalites “Rock Fort Rock” from Ball of Fire
6. Melvin Taylor “Telephone Song” from Dirty Pool
7. Bach “BWV ?” from The Complete Harpsichord Concertos (?)
8. Shaggy “Hot Shot” from Hotshot
9. Tribal Tech “Uh…Yeah OK” from Face First
10. Pat Martino & Les Paul “I’m Confessin’ That I love You” from All Sides Now
11. J.J. Cale “Cajun Moon” from Greatest Hits
12. Devil in a Woodpile “Whistle Gait” from Devil in a Woodpile
13. B.B. King “Just Like a Woman” from Let the Good Times Roll

that's all new stuff to me. I can't wait to hear it!
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/21/05 10:21 PM
Mark,

Most of the reviews in my track notes came from Amazon's editorial reviews. The ones I couldn't find on Amazon I located with Google. Next time, I'll include my sources in print.
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/21/05 11:41 PM
I gathered my notes from artistdirect.com. They had nice bios on just about everybody. Informative without reaching the realm of TMI.

Got your disc yesterday Peter, but haven't had a chance to give it a listen yet.

Posted By: BigWill Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/22/05 02:04 AM
Pmb, I reckon I'll bump you up the list.
The Bach tune is the Allegro from Concerto for 3 Harpsichords in D Minor, BWV 1063. The 3 disc set if from a label called Vox Box or Vox Musical Group. Good recording, but I dunno squat about how the performance stacks up.
Posted By: dmn23 Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/23/05 12:22 AM
Alright, I've second-guessed myself enough. Here it is. Craig, WhatFurrer and BigWill - your copies go in the mail tomorrow. If anyone else wants one, send me a PM.

Sure, PM me your address... same goes for anyone with a more, er... punk-flavoured ear. (Ray, even though that Jerry Lee Lewis played the piano with his feet, I'm thinking more Bad Religion and the Subhumans here!)

BigWill...

See the Wikipedia definition here.

The ultimate cock rock song is "Big Balls" by AC/DC... the innuendo, double entendres and chauvenism... it's the poster boy for it.

I also stretch it to include the hair metal bands where the guys have 3 lbs of product in their hair, tight pink spandex, leather "gay bar" hats, makeup (and not KISS/Misfits style Halloween makeup... like Mary Kay stuff!) and yet they swagger like they're the ultimate in machismo (or ma-cheese-mo)... see Motley Crue, Poison, Whitesnake. Some bands that deserve the title but I just can't pin it on them... like Skid Row (Slave to the Grind did a lot to help that) and G'n'R (who I don't really care for, but I respect).

Sid - here's what's coming at you... since I've got a soft spot in my heart for punk covers, you've never expect, the second half of the CD is all covers of songs you wouldn't expect to be covered. (and a lot of CanCon - CANadian CONtent for the rest of you!)

Track Listing:
Bootsauce - Whatcha Need (from Montreal - one of the songs I use to test speakers - has some very deep analog low frequency content)
Sibling Rivalry - See My Way (Joey Ramone put out a 3 song EP with his real life brother Mickey under the name Sibling Rivalry)
Less Than Jake fea. Billy Bragg - The Brightest Bulb Has Burned Out (Billy Bragg - 'nuff said)
Fabulous Disaster - Next Big Joyride (all-Lesbian punk act... on the same label as the all-gay-male Pansy Division)
Avengers - American In Me (Penelope Houston - one of the original angry chick singers!)
Bad Religion - The Handshake (punk rock staple band)
Anti-Flag - Watch The Right (the new breed - think all 5 members are legal to drink now)
Dayglo Abortions - Proud to Be a Canadian (from Victoria, BC, Canada - O-FFEN-SIVE)
Real McKenzies - Dropping Like Flies (Scottish punk from Western Canada, piper's married to my ex-GFs sister... yes, I said a bagpipe player in a punk band!)
Sugar - Tilted (Bob Mould - from Minnesota - ex-member of Husker Du)
Artificial Life - Fateful Day (1988 Winnipeg - my hometown - Hardcore - my bro’s band used to open for them, salvaged off vinyl)
X-Engine-X - Taste of Pain (2003 - from Winnipeg - "Nu Metal"... friends of mine)
The Harlots - Below (2004 - from Winnipeg... friends and also clients)

Covers
Joey Ramone - What A Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong cover)
NOFX - Olive Me (cover of "All Of Me" by Sinatra)
D-A-D - A Horse With No Name (America/popularized by Neil Young cover, D-A-D are from Denmark, half my CDs from them are signed thanks to a friend and fellow fan in DK!)
Swingin' Utters - Eddie’s Teddy (cover from the Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack)
The Farrell Brothers - I Saw The Light (Hank Williams cover - Farrells are from Selkirk, Manitoba - 20 mins north of me)
Dust Rhinos - Whiskey in the Jar (traditional/popularized by Metallica- band is from Winnipeg, Manitoba)
Asexuals - The Times They Are A-Changin' (Bob Dylan cover - Asexuals are from Montreal, Canada)
Me First & the Gimme Gimmes - Only The Good Die Young (Billy Joel cover - some subtle but witty lyric changes!)
Agent Orange - Seek & Destroy (Metallica cover)
Mickey Desadist - Scum F*** Tradition (G.G. Allin cover - Mickey is from Hamilton, ON, Canada)
Mickey Desadist - Tennessee Waltz (popularized by Patti Page)

Got your CD this morning, Mark, and I was home and actually got a chance to listen to some of it (since my kid is sick with the stomach flu). I like what I've heard so far. (And if it means anything, my wife prefers this disc to spiff's.)

man, bren. now thats a list! me likee the punk covers. can you hook a brother up? oh yeah, the Dropkick Murphys (out of Boston) are another punk band with a piper too. their version of Fields of Athenry is pretty f-in great!

Woo-Hoo! Better watch out! I got a way with the lady folks. Yep.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/26/05 03:44 AM
I listened to the rest of the tracks in the car to and from work this afternoon. Unfortunately, I still don't like David Sanborn.

Some stand-out tracks are #12, Devil in a Woodpile -- awesome -- and #18, Long Beach Sub All-Stars -- I had never heard of them before, but Chali 2na's voice (of Jurassic 5) is unmistakable. That track is great.

Ash - send me a PM with your address.

Sorry I haven't sent any of these out yet. Had a hard drive crap out on Sunday on the system with the burners. Why don't I have them on all the computers? Good question - not like the old days of "wait, don't start Calculator - I'm burning a CD... Argh! Coaster!"

PM is in the mail, so to speak...
Posted By: bigwill2 Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/26/05 08:57 PM
I don't know much about any of the artists, but I do know that the Long Beach Dub All-Stars are the remaining members of Sublime with various guests.
I think Devil in a Woodpile hails from Chicago, but I'm not sure. Most of the disc they use a tuba for bass. The song you heard they used a string bass, I think.
Sorry about the Sanborn tune. It seemed to stick out like a sore thumb when I listened to the mix, too. Just lacks soul. All style, no heart. The drums sure sound good on M60s, though.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/26/05 11:06 PM
Hey, I'm just trying to set a good example about feedback. The only response about my mix so far -- cough Mark cough Craig -- has come from a newbie. He likes it.
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/27/05 01:30 AM
I've just heard the first couple tracks of your cd today Peter. Work has been hell, and then I've been playing tennis at night. When I get home I eat dinner and crash.

When I first put the disc in, and that first tune started...the one about the shoes...I thought "what the hell is this?"...then about halfway through the song, I was really diggin' it.

When I saw your address, I noticed how close to UCLA you live. It's a shame I'm not being sent to UCLA this time for work.

I know what you mean about being busy. I hate not having enough time to do what I want. But, at least you're getting tennis in (which I assume you want to do).
Posted By: MarkSJohnson Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/27/05 11:17 AM
Sorry, Peter. There are times when I'm doing lots of "graphics work" (Read: No Audio) and can listen to music for extended periods while I work. Then, there are times as I've had lately, where I just haven't had a chance to listen to ANY music.
Along the same lines, I got Mark's CD yesterday and haven't taken it out of the bubble wrap yet.
It's not that I'm unappreciative; quite the opposite. I want to listen when I can really listen and not half a track at a time between phone calls or while I'm rolling my chair around the room multitasking on four computers!
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/27/05 03:09 PM
No worries. I was mostly feigning impatience. I can wait. Really, no problem. Waiting is something I do all the time...

OK, now have you listened to the CD????
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/27/05 03:45 PM
I'm exactly in Mark's boat. I want to be able to really sit down and listen. Uninterrupted. Not happening anytime soon likely.

Btw...got your cd today BigWill. Never appologize for packaging that creative. Ghetto or not, that was cool.

Posted By: bigjohn Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/27/05 03:49 PM
same here bigwill.. i got the cd yesterday, and brought it to work today to listen to as i type away.. give it a little preview before i crank it up on the axioms. but, here it is, almost 11, and i still havent got a chance to listen to it..

ditto on the packaging. i love bubble wrap.. i started popping it here at my desk, and i saw heads bobbing up over cubicle walls to see what was going on. quick.. someone throw a corndog to distract them!!!

Cool, cool, cool. I'm hopin' for some reciprocity as I ended up paying that kid $2 per disc! Not a big deal though; it's going to a good cause (him not you guys ).
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/27/05 11:39 PM
bigwill, I dropped your CD in the mail this afternoon, complete with a buttload of notes. Your packaging inspired me and I did shipped mine the same way.
Posted By: AdamP88 Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/28/05 06:49 AM
You did shipped yours, eh?

Could you done bring me a beer?

What is it they call people in Britain, again?
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/29/05 06:40 AM
Mike, got your mix today. I copied it to my iPod and plan on listening to it as I fall asleep tonight. Gotta squeeze the music time in somehow. I'll give it a proper run on my Axioms soon.
Posted By: BigWill Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/30/05 03:39 PM
And I got yours yesterday, pmb, thank you very much. I listened to the whole thing from the sweet spot with a big glass o' beer in hand.
The wife preferred it immensely to spiffs CD (and my own "agro" music). She always likes the folksy singer-songwriter stuff. I most liked the Mother Hips, Bela Fleck and MMW (?) tunes.
Spiff, please don't be insulted by the above statement - my sister-in-law was over Saturday night and really, really dug your CD (except that one song by the big-voiced girl). OTOH, she was pretty sh1t-faced!
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 04/30/05 11:19 PM
with the cd's I've been receiving there is definately a strong folksy/guitar driven theme to most of them. I picked some of the more mellow stuff that I listen to, and compared to three discs I've received, my disc was on speed.

I'm currently working on a Spiffnme Mix v.2. More jazz, less electronica (though there are a couple tracks). I'll post a track listing soon.

Thanks everyone for the discs. This have been great fun!

Well, I think I might start compiling something myself. This just seems like too much fun to sit out.
Posted By: bigjohn Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 05/01/05 04:46 PM
well, my situation has still not changed. .

i am still having issues with my cd burner, and have yet to get it fixed. i apologize for promises i have made to make cd's, and i DO plan on making it happen. i just have no real time frame.

thanks for your patience.

Hey spiff, don't leave the wacky stuff out entirely - different musical experiences are cool even if it doesn't appeal to everyones tastes. There is always the >> button on the remote.
kcarlie, I wasn't going to say anything about this but WTF. When you make your disc and send it out to folks they will have a greater insight into what makes you tick, I think. Spiff's disc and pmb's disc (combined with the thousands of posts I've read from them - and the application of some stereotypes ) both gave me an eerie sense of who they are - without ever meeting either. Strange.
Posted By: Ken.C Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 05/01/05 08:05 PM
I'm working on it... Gotta get the balance of metal and bluegrass right, ya know...
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 05/01/05 09:41 PM
Oh...it'll still have some stuff y'all will hate. No worries there.

Just finished putting it together. I think this one is more fun than the last.

Posted By: BigWill Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 05/02/05 03:31 AM
Maybe it's the wine talking, but I listened to pmb's disc again and liked it much, much better. Especially #6. But still negatory on Bjork and the guy they say is influenced by Louis Armstrong.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 05/02/05 04:14 AM
I admit I've been on an acoustic/folksy bent for quite some time now, leaving the likes of Tool, Metallica, and Alice in Chains by the wayside. I still like to mix it up though.

The mix I assembled wasn't so much "my favorite songs" as a compilation of songs I thought would appeal even to an audience that doesn't regularly listen to the "lighter side of eclectic".

I'm glad the wine improved your taste in music, Mark.

Can't wait for the responses to my comp. You guys should have it on Monday I'd assume... unless the USPS is slow as dirt.

Any of you folks who sent me your addresses, but have not yet received the CD, the next batch is ready to go out. Unfortunately, the kid said he couldn't fit all of the songs on the disc this time so one had to go - track #4 by Davis Sanborn was removed. Sorry.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 05/02/05 08:17 PM
Why apologize? IMHO, you're doing everyone a big favor.
Posted By: bigwill2 Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 05/02/05 09:18 PM
Now that was just plain mean.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 06/10/05 08:09 PM
Bren,

I borrowed/stole this CD from Ken's house (he's on vacations) a few days ago and have had it in my car since. I just looked at the track listing today, but I can tell you that I like at least half the stuff on there. There's only a couple that I skip regularly -- I don't recall which, though.

This is very WHITE music.
Posted By: AshBoomstick Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 06/11/05 02:55 AM
In reply to:

This is very WHITE music.

not that's there's anything wrong with that! that's alright, i'm gonna make a disc skewed to the Celtic side, and you don't get much whiter than that. now i've just gotta get the playlist down to fit on a disc!

Posted By: pmbuko Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 06/11/05 03:14 AM
I figured it was a given that I didn't have any problem with it being White. It's not "white or die" music. It's just white.
Posted By: AshBoomstick Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 06/11/05 03:33 AM
is Lawrence Welk on there? 'cause that's white music!

well on this very topic, i will request some assistance from my fellow axiomites...(Peter, I normally pose this type of question to your brother and he is always quite helpful, but he's on holidays now correct???).

I pretty much have the list pared down for a cd of my own, so what i need to know is what is the best way to get the songs coverted to files and burnt to a cd? I have Nero on the PC, but that is burning software only, no? What is the best way to convert the original songs to MP3 (or whatever is best) at a decent bit rate? If i require something different where would i find the software? As you can see, I'm essentailly hopeless with this kind of thing. I was hoping someone might be able to help me out.

thanks in advance everyone
Scott
Posted By: AshBoomstick Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 06/12/05 02:48 AM
sid-what i've done is used Windows Media Player to record all of my cds to my hard drive at whatever the "lossless" bit rate is for a WMA file (varies by track) and just added the files to the "burn list". under the "burn" tab, i can rearrange order of the tracks as i see fit and it'll tell me which files won't fit on the disc. plus it does all the converting back to an audio track file when burning so it's not an mp3/wma/whatever and can play on any player. now i'm sure that by virtue of the fact that i'm using "cd quality" bit rates i'm limiting the number of tracks on the disc, but i figure it's better to have fewer, better sounding songs than more, crappy sounding ones.
Posted By: sidvicious02 Re: Big Will's Favorite Songs Vol. I - 06/13/05 02:53 PM
great Ash, thanks I'll give that a try (I'm travelling for the next few days to the Queen City - Regina, so I'll try when I get back home this weekend).

thanks again
