I was just wondering if anybody has compared the two? If so, is there anybody who preferred the 100's, but went with the 80's because they are cheaper? Right now I figure the price difference is about three to four hundred dollars (Canadian). Not really a big deal. Any input would be appreciated, as I am going to get one or the other next week.

Thanks for the link, but they are comparing the 90P in the monitor line. Isn't the Studio line the next line up for quality?
I would love to see the results, but I can't wait a minute more than next week :-) My old speakers have crapped out after 15 years, and I need some tunes very soon.

I know you would love the Axiom's, have you considered the free 2-day shipping and 30 day guarantee? Axiom will not argue if you decide to ship them back, which is unlikely. Hope you find someone on here willing to audition for you.

Seriously though the cost of return shipping shouldn't be much if you decide to purchase a pair. If no one pops up here that can give you an audition then go for it. Order a pair and tell us what you think.
Thinking really hard about trying out a pair. Especially since after checking my notes, the 100's would actually be about $800.00 (Canadian) more.

You might try calling or emailing Amie at Axiom, it is possible there is someone in that area, just not on the audition thread. There has to be somebody I would think. What would you be driving the 80's with, can you drive 4-ohm speakers with your equipment?
Also I think I recently read on another post on here where KCMike auditioned the 60's against the 100's and found them to be sonically very close to the 60's, so the 80's actually might be a step up at a lower price...

Good question on the amp. It is a 15 year old Kenwood pre-amp and power amp set-up. I was speaking to Jc (Axiom) by e-mail and gave him the specs. he said that it should be fine. I may also contact Aime. Thanks for the input.

I haven't heard either, but I've heard people here say
a) The 100s have deeper, tighter bass(than the 60s, that is, to be expected with the 3 7" drivers vs 2 6.5" drivers).
b) The 100s, along with many other paradigms, have an upper bass hump not present on the 60s or 80s.
c) The 60s/80s have a bit over the 100s in the mids, rest is similar sounding.
And lastly, while sound quality between the two when compared 100% opinion - looking at their prices, I'm sure it's a fact two M80s would sound better than one Studio 100.

Ahh, just a prairie boy (MB) getting his joking shot in. Truthfully, though, a lot of us just took the plunge based on the advice of other owners and not many of those speakers get returned after the trial period!

I drove my M80s with an old Kenwood Basic M2A amp for some time.I never had a problem with it.
Dam this comes up a lot.....
I think they sound pretty close, but take what I say with a grain of salt. I'm no audiophile. I couldn't even tell you what a soundstage is. I know what sounds good and bad to me though....
But anyway, I'd try to listen to some 80's, then take the same CD to the store and listen to the 100's. Or, just buy the 80's and send them back if you don't like them. I have a feeling that you'll keep them though.
And I'd be lying if money wasn't a consideration with my choice, but I'm not exactly in the pore house either. If I really thought the 100's sounded better, I would have bought them. Hell, I was all set to buy some 703's, but wasn't all that impressed with them. I liked the 100's more.
Shaned, Before I purchased my M60s (I say I purchased, because I am not returning them now after about a month), I was debating between them, B&W 703 and Paradigm studio 100. I had a chance to hear them all (I heard m60s at somebody's home). True, Paradigm may have been a bit better in terms of bass and overall sound stage, but for the price.... m60 do just as good and yes... they sound similar.
Thanks to everybody who responded! I only picked the 100's because I want three-way speakers. I am going by a Paradigm dealer today. I am even thinking that maybe the 60's would be enough. With the reviews about the 80's, they all seem to comment on the fact that speaker placement is fussy, and that they REALLY have to be away from the wall. Not an ideal set-up for my room. 14ft X 26ft, with a pool table in the middle.
Pretty close. I am running a Basic M1 with a Basic C1 pre-amp. That combo has served me well for many years with my now dead Acoustic Research speakers. Maxed out every weekend for a decade and a half. IMHO, that is pretty good return for the money.

What model of ARs do/did you have?
I knew that once I mentioned their name, I would get that question :-) There is no model number on the speaker. For some reason, I am thinking AR303. They are 24" X 12" X 10". They were a very good speaker in their day, for the average music lover. They cost me a $1,000.00, 15 years ago. Every other electronic product has dropped significantly in that time. However, I notice that home audio is the exception. Who buys 10 to 50 thousand dollar speakers??? I can't imagine, with pop or rock, there being that huge a difference.

Don't they call it a tundra that far north?
I had the basic C2 preamp.The pre died on me a few years back but the M2A is still running stong at a freinds house.You should have no problems driving the 80s with that combo.
i think you have to have at least a
foot of permafrost to qualify as tundra. he's about 3 inches shy of qualification.
Sudden change. Patience is not my strong suit. I ordered the 60's today. I was told that if they are not enough, I can upgrade to the 80's with no additional shipping charges. I knew that if I went to a high end store today, I would end up spending an obscene amount of money. Considering the upgrade from old to new, I am sure that I will be very impressed with the sound quality. And I can always get more power with the 80's if needed.
