Speaker cone pushed in - Axiom Message Boards

I have the M22's and my wife's nephew pushed in the middle cone. I't must of been like that a coulpe of days now. I noticed it this morning and sucked it out with a vaccum cleaner (After all the yelling and screaming). Man was I really pissed. I would like to know if it is going to degrade the sound coming out of that speaker? Another thing, what is the purpose of that middle cone anyway?

If they answer that question, they might have to kill you.

Ahh, grasshopper, your question is both naïve and wise. The center cone is often called a dust cap. As such it…umm…keeps dust off or something. But that is not its real purpose! No! Under the so-called “dust cap” is a microprocessor, camera, and transmitter that records everything you do and say (and play) and relays it back to big brother. Is that because the government is trying to keep taps on you? No, why would they? They are far too busy smoozing oil companies, trying to upgrade their arm candy, and oppressing third world countries. No, that information is passed straight on to the real masters of the universe.

Yes, true believers, women rule the world. How? By forcing men to beg for upgrade money. The information collected by the dust cap cams is downloaded into a huge pink computer complete with lace and sparkles contained in a combo Mary Kay/Barbie storefront. From there it is crunched by billions of Gigabytes of processing power and a report is sent to your wife disguised as “feminine hygiene product.” The report details your listening/watching habits along with any pertinent transcripts indicating any dissatisfaction with your system or desire to upgrade. Complex facial recognition software is employed in order to ascertain exactly when you have mustered up the courage to ask for an upgrade. At that moment, your wife has you at her mercy and can guilt you into all manners of unpleasant tasks…shoe shopping, rain gutter cleaning, yard work, visits to the in-laws, etc. It is a diabolical plot and one that has men all over the world at the whim of their significant others.

Oh, yeah, just in case the above was NOT tongue in cheek enough, I have no idea what those dust caps are for.

You had me going until you said "billions of Gigabytes of processing power" -- then the inner nerd in me took over.

Gigabytes are a measure of storage, not processing speed. That's like Han Solo's famous blunder: "It's the ship that did the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs." Parsecs are units of distance, not speed! I think you meant to say "billions of gigahertz." Come to think of it, a billion gigahertz is one exahertz. So you should have said "one exahertz of processing power."

You see how my inner nerd ruins a lot of humor for me?

Another fun one(I'll have to see the flick again to see exactly WHAT letter he used; I think it was "P" instead of "C")but in "Red Planet" the resident scientist said GATP for DNA.

Inner Nerds can be fun

Being a person who has an Egyptology minor along with having a loud inner nerd can make it difficult to watch many Hollywood movies. Or Discovery Channel specials, for that matter.

I have a fun one too. Can someone please answer the question?

If you look at a diagram of the anatomy of a speaker, you'll see that the dust cap covers up the "engine" at the center of the speaker, where most of the action happens. The voice coil is the piston of the speaker. If any dirt or debris get into the piston, it could cause unwanted friction, which would lead to wear and eventually breakdown.

Inner nerd??? Oh man, Ken, you're deep in denial. Have you read your last 3,000 or so posts?

err... yeah. I prefer "geek" but "nerd" does also apply...

Of course if I'd thought about it for two more seconds, it might have occurred to me that we're all guilty of spending an inordinate amount of time sitting in front of a computer discussing stereo equipment. Hmmmmmmm...........
