Thanks for the reminder. I tried to pre-order this when I first heard of it (a few weeks ago) but of course I completely forgot in the intervening few weeks ;(

>>holy poop on a stick !!

I have to agree. Check out the lineup on the title track :

David – vocals, guitars, electric piano, percussion
David Crosby – vocals
Graham Nash – vocals
Richard Wright – Hammond organ
Rado Klose – guitar
Guy Pratt – bass
Andy Newmark – drums

I heard one of the songs (can't remember the name) on the radio last week. Sounded VERY good.

Nice houseboat!
Posted By: Haoleb Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/02/06 04:09 AM
Roger waters also released his album Ca Ira a while ago. I bought it, but unless you like opera i suggest you dont. This one wont get much playtime around me

But the question is: WHEN THE BLOODY HELL IS THE PULSE DVD FINALLY COMING OUT?
Posted By: KC23 Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/02/06 07:12 AM
Thanks for the heads up. The clip on the site sounded awesome.
Posted By: medic8r Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/02/06 04:34 PM
I followed the Amazon link to "Pulse" and it lists September as the release date. Geez.

So does anyone have the Richard Wright CD "Broken China" from 1996? Wondering about getting it...
Posted By: dllewel Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/02/06 04:42 PM
I didn't know about this release, thanks for the tip Bray. I liked the houseboat video. That pedal-driven instrument with the glass bowls was pretty neat.

Besides Pulse, I'm waiting for the SACD release of Wish You Were Here, and hoping it's as good of a mix as they did on DSOTM.
Posted By: Rock_Head Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/02/06 05:48 PM
Thanks Bray! Notice all the shows are sold out. A stellar cast of musicians on the album. There is the Roxy Music connection with Phil Manzanera and Andy Newmark. Guy Pratt from the touring Floyd band and Ged Lynch from Robert Plant's band. Should be very interesting...
Posted By: HomeDad Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/02/06 07:18 PM
The DVD of Wish You Were here comes out on April 25 in DTS.
Posted By: MarkSJohnson Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/02/06 08:30 PM
Thanks for the info, Michael! Wish You Were Here was always one of my favorites... I'll be looking forward to it!
Posted By: dllewel Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/02/06 08:48 PM
Thanks for the info Michael! Do you have a link to some information? I'm surprised to hear it will be a DTS DVD release, given the success with 'Dark Side of the Moon' which was SACD. I would prefer the uncompressed SACD myself, but it does seem something that even Sony is moving away from. Where did you find the information on this? Thanks.
Posted By: dkfan Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/02/06 10:06 PM
Wow! I did not know about this one, will be picking it up this weekend, for sure! Btw, yeh I'm waiting for the Pulse DVD too, patiently!

Here it is, I'm going to pre-order myself

Posted By: MarkSJohnson Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/02/06 11:01 PM
Aaaahhhh...it's a movie. That's why it's DTS.....

DESCRIPTION:
This film goes inside and behind WISH YOU WERE HERE, Pink Floyd's 1975 follow-up album to the monstrously successful DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, and shows the band's artistic progression after the sound and fury of sudden superstardom. The album--in particular the song "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"--was a tribute to their lost leader, Syd Barrett (who famously burnt out in an LSD-induced nervous breakdown). This release features footage of Pink Floyd on tour for the album, and also uses interviews and critical analysis to better understand this crucial moment in the band's history.
Posted By: HomeDad Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/02/06 11:11 PM
I missed that, might be pretty good, but I would much rather have a SACd or DVD-A version.

>>(who famously burnt out in an LSD-induced nervous breakdown)<<

That is a HIGHLY dabatable statement.
Not saying it is necessarily wrong, just in question.
If you go to any of the Pink Floyd forums you can read bigger pisssing matches over that subject than anything you could find on the AVS forums.

Link to a current Syd Barrett thread.

Maybe that's just the problem: someone pissed in his acid.
Posted By: LightninJoe Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/03/06 04:04 AM
I just saw March 6th as the release day for the WYWH SACD the other day. WooHoo! But the original release date for Pulse was in 2004. I'm about to pass out from holding my breath that long.

From what I have read, and what seems to be something of a consensus among headshrinkers who have been interviewed, is that Syd most likely had bipolar or schizophrenic tendencies and the massive amounts of psychedelic drugs he was ingesting merely accelerated the symptoms. Sounds reasonable. The fact is nobody really knows. I don't think he ever went in for real treatment and he never speaks publicly.

I believe that is an Armonica. Allegedly it was invented by Ben Franklin, and is considered the first instrument invented in the US. The Armonica was "lost" for many decades until one was finally successfully recreated in 1982 (after Corning Glass and MIT failed to do so in the 1950s).

I have never heard them, but the Glass Orchestra of Canada performs on custom glass instruments, and still performs in Toronto.

Just got "On An Island", and so far its very good.It definitely has a "Floyd" feel to it, just maybe more relaxed.

I've been looking all over for the "Wish You Were Here" SACD but cant find it or any news about it.

Posted By: dllewel Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/07/06 04:19 PM
I am hoping to get my copy of "On an Island" today as well.
As far as the WYWH SACD, it isn't out and all news of it has vanished, except for the blurb about it from last July at http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/.

I'm guessing that it has taken a backseat to the long awaited pulse release, which now seems official for September. Amazon's preorder price for $16 seems pretty good. Maybe after that, but who knows?

Posted By: pmbuko Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/07/06 04:34 PM
My copy of Island shipped yesterday.
Posted By: FirebirdTN Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/07/06 07:44 PM
Listening to it now at work on my PC. Can't WAIT to get home and give it a listen on my new M60tis!!!

I am such a Floyd fan, but I also love ambient music, and thought it kind of ironic on the inside of back cover David makes mention to Steve O' Rourke 8)

The Pulse release coming up, that is a DVD, correct? I *had* the VHS of Pulse and Delicate Sound of Thunder, but my wife loaded them out, and I never got them back. No matter, would rather have DVDs if and when they are available.

Bray,

Where did you find "On An Island" locally? Showed the videos on the website to the wife (also a huge Floyd fan) and she said "Get that!"...

I went on down to Borders and got a copy of On an Island. So far im only on track 6 but overall seems pretty good. I never really cared much for Gilmour/floyd works after roger left but this one seems fine.

Although, i never really cared for what gilmour does with his voice.

WhatFurrer
I didnt find it locally.
Sony sent an e-mail with new releases and I preordered there.
The transaction was a little weird. Kind of hard to explain, but they sent me an e-mail (dated 3/6) saying that it got shipped out late and they were sorry it would be there late, but when I got home it was in my mailbox.
I ordered it on 3/1, it wasnt supposed to be released until 3/6 which was the day I recieved it. Cant figure out why they were apologetic about things.
Posted By: Paul350Z Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/08/06 05:40 AM
There's just a handful of SACDs out that make me want to pull the trigger on a $500-$1000 disc player. If the Pink Floyd catalog were to come out that would be an easy buy then. Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall ...
Posted By: bray Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/08/06 12:52 PM
It isnt everything, but lt has some good ones.
I wish "Obscured by Clouds" was in that box.
Posted By: WhatFurrer Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/08/06 08:32 PM
Bray,

Interesting...Found and bought a copy yesterday at Short Circuit City for $9.99 ...

I also have it here at work today...I'm liking what I hear...just wish it had a bit more of his electric work on it...but the acoustic work is very fine.

Also, saw "The Wall" on DVD (I don't remember if it was the concert or the movie) at Sam's for $12.99...will have to go back and investigate further...

Here's a nice Yahoo! article on David turning 60 the same week he released the CD ...

I've been enjoying the album for a couple of days now, thanks again for the info Bray. It's pretty good, although very mellow. It's great for a quiet night at home with the Axioms.

I listen to most CDs with in 2-Channel analog direct bypass, but this one I like with the full setup running under the Logic7 mode. It gives it great ambiance, especially for the beginning of the album.

I bought the CD at Best Buy on sale and was surprised it came with a bonus disc containing a single additional track, "Island Jam". A nice slow blues jam that I think should have made it onto the album.
Posted By: michael_d Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/13/06 03:06 PM
I bought this yesterday and listened to it on the way home (300 mile trip). Didn’t quite make it through the whole CD as it damn near put me to sleep.

I like Floyd, but this one is just tooooo slow……….I had to pop in Dark Side of the Moon to wake me up (bought the SACD).

Posted By: pmbuko Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/13/06 03:16 PM
I'm thinking the same thing. It's good, but waaaaaayyyy tooooooo meeellllooooooooow.
Posted By: bray Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/14/06 12:01 AM
Agreed.
It is a bit to mellow for my taste too.
It isnt bad, just not what I was expecting.

I can't find where I saw that. May have been a fragment of bad info. I'll be watching out for new info like all other Floydians.
Posted By: HomeDad Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/21/06 06:21 PM
I've been checking also, haven't seen any news of a release date.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/25/06 02:28 AM
Since I was a bit disappointed with this release I decided to look at some Roger Waters solo stuff. True fans will probably laugh at me for not knowing about this album already, but I just found the excellent "Amused to Death" -- released in 1992, but totally new to me!

This is great stuff!
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/27/06 06:22 AM
I personally LOVE the fact that it's mellow. It's definately one of the better cd's I've picked up in awhile...though come to think of it, most of the stuff I've bought lately has been really good. I'm on a good run right now.

Posted By: pmbuko Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/27/06 06:23 AM
I go through mellow phases and I know I'll appreciate it more then. This just isn't a mellow phase.
Posted By: Rapmon Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/28/06 04:24 AM
I love that CD. It's been ten years since its release but I still listen to it once a month. It has so much emotion put into it and it has some serious rock, bass, shake the walls sound to it. Just a great recording. One of the best ever. I believe he is working on his new one now. Greatest song writer ever, next to Neil Peart.
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/28/06 06:26 AM
Just to expose myself to humiliation, I'll ask...

Who's Neil Peart?

Posted By: HomeDad Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/28/06 07:18 AM
The former drummer for Rush.

If you like "On An Island" be sure and pick up the "David Gilmour In Concert" DVD.
Although he covers mostly old Pink Floyd tunes, he also does some of his own stuff that is a tad bit more mellow.
In the "extras" he does a version of "Dimming Of The Day" that is fantastic.
Edit..
Just looked and Dimming of the Day is in the main song line up.

I was thinking of an Elvis tune "Don't" that is in the extras.
He doe s both songs VERY well.

Neil is still with the group and I'm sure they are working on something new as we speak.

Anyway, getting back to floyd, how does The Wall DVD sound and look on 7.1 HT? I still only have a VHS edition. Definately time to upgrade.
Posted By: medic8r Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/30/06 07:38 PM
... and, back to Rush. Indeed, they will likely finish a new CD this year. On a VH1 Classic special promoting their concert DVD R30, Geddy and Alex talked about going into the studio soon, aiming for a fall release. Neil did not participate in the interview but was, of course, discussed.

It will be nice to get a new studio CD from them after so many live albums lately.

re: On an Island. Who else thought the cd packaging was very classy? Seems a lot of thought went into every aspect of the album, including the packing it comes in.

Posted By: pmbuko Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/31/06 04:12 AM
I do like how it feels and looks like a small bound book, but I don't like the foam hub that holds the CD. I don't know if mine was cut a little too large, but it's a bitch and half to get it back on there.

Maybe they are anticipating some "shrinkage" as it, y'know, ages...
Posted By: spiffnme Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/31/06 05:41 PM
You can't put it back on at an angle. It really needs to be pressed down from directly above. If you do that, it seems to work very well.

Posted By: pmbuko Re: Pink Floyd fans. - 03/31/06 09:22 PM
I think they just don't want you to take it out of your CD player.
