Depending on your room configuration I would suggest buying a HD projector (such as the Sanyo Z4 which is last years model now on clearance for around 1200USD I think) and buy a screen for max $300 (you could make your own for under $100) and you can have as big as a screen that you want!

Although anyone that I know that is thinking of buying a rear projection TV I suggest getting a front projection system first.

It really does look like you have a 100" plasma on the wall!

It will also depend on your lighting control in your room.

Rob's advice is good about front projection, but the great thing about rear-projection DLP sets is you can get a stunning picture in a normally lighted room.

Front projection requires a totally dark room for impressive picture quality, so consider whether it would mesh with your life and activities. It didn't with mine, which is why I got a rear-projection DLP (a Samsung).

The Samsungs can be adjusted to deliver an excellent picture and I've been generally pleased with mine (it's almost three years old). The new Mitsubishi or Toshiba DLP sets have, I think, a slight edge on the Samsungs but I've mostly seen the 1080p models, which are more expensive. This does not mean that a 720p DLP set can't deliver a really beautiful picture. It can.

Willy, I'm a bit biased, but I think your choice is an excellent one.

Front Projector -- I'm going to go for that in my other home. This will be for daily viewing in all kinds of lighting situations.

Magna/Toshiba -- I didn't like them last year, I have admit though that I didn't look that closely this time around. I thought the Sony SXRD looks nice too, but they are all a bit more pricey and *none can touch how sweet the samsung looks* in my opinion. I know that shouldn't be part of the decision, but it would drive me nuts to look at at box I don't like all the time. And when pricing and pic quality get close it is a factor.

Ajax, is that the 50? How long have you had it? Any gripes at all? How is it sitting at the close end on that couch? At times, my wife will be sitting almost that close.

No, that's your 5687. Trust me! It looks much bigger in person than it does in that photo .

I've had it since early July. No problems whatsoever. I can't tell you how it is to watch from the close end of the couch cuz I've never sat there and watched (I get the sweet spot ). However, at about 5 feet from the center of the screen (less than 4 feet from the closest edge), and at that severe an angle, while watchable, I don't think it would be exactly ideal. If possible the closest one should be from the 56" is about 7 feet.

perfect. I'm probably 10-12ft away, the wife 8-9ft, and her angle really isn't very far off center.
