M80 driven with Yamaha RX-V2600... - Axiom Message Boards

Cheers to everybody here at the forums,

I own a nice 7.1 setup from axiom which is nice yet lately i've been thinking going from my M22 V2 to a new M80 V2.
i do have some concerns with driving the M80 which are 4ohm load speakers on my Yamaha RX-V2600 receiver.

I've seen some places which sate that the yamaha
RX-V2600 can drive 4ohm speakers nicely as long as i keep the impedance knob on 8ohm and have some good cooling for the receiver itself.

I've spoken with Alan if the Yamaha RX-V2600 would drive the M80 V2 nicely? he said that the M80 V2 are quite easy to drive as they plus he told me that they dip into 4ohm load only on some low frequences moreover he game me this:

which states that as long as i'll keep the impedance knob to 8ohm with some good cooling all will be well.

my queastion is quite simple.
do any Yamaha RX-V2600 owners here in the forums drive M80?

if they do please give some feedback on the issue, does the reciver handles it easily? does it run hotter\shutdowns?

i'm using 7.1 setup so this probably adds some more stress for the receiver as well. 2XM22 1XVP150 4XQS8 SVS PB12-plus.

Another thing i would like to know is whether i can find somewhere a graph which gives impedance too frequence of the M80 V2?

It all depends on your room size, and how loud you run it for extended periods. These are the two key factors as to if and when the Yamaha will shut down.

I have a MUCH lower Yamaha than the 2600 driving an Epic 80 system with no problem. It does run quite warm, but I have decent ventilation around the receiver.

well i'll have it runing in a 13ftX19ft or somethig close to that size.

it won't run more then 3hours for a movie or music.

my receiver stands in an open space as open as if you put it on a table in a room.

i like to drive the system to about -15db which is loud enough for me at the moment in a 16ftX16ft room.

do you have 5.1 or 7.1 setup runing?

Your V2600 will have no problem driving the M80's. No doubt though the M80s will put more load on the amp than the M60s will.

I remember my first Yamaha receiver from more than 20 years ago. In the comment area of the registration card I mentioned that perhaps the receiver needed a cooling fan. Heat is nothing new to Yamaha receivers; they simply run hot. I would never place a Yamaha receiver in an enclosure.

In the setup menu, you can set the cooling fan to continuous. The receiver's protection circuits will shut the receiver down if it gets too warm. If this happens frequently then set the fan to continuous.

I have the Yamaha HTR-5990 and it runs rather warm like the rest of the Yamahas, but I have not had to run the fan, even after 8 or 10 hours of combination movies and 2-channel stereo listening. If the fan has come on, I've not heard it do so. One feature mine has, and yours probably does too, is Pure Direct, where all features of the receiver are shut down (video circuitry/processing namely) except for 2-channel or multi-channel audio...even the display goes to sleep. I've noticed the receiver runs cooler if this mode is used when listening to audio only.

Even with the heat, I'm sure you're enjoying your Yamaha as much as I enjoy mine.

ya the yamaha has great DSP programs...

i do hope someone will post a link or a graph with M80's impedance too frequence so i at least would be able to see where it dips to the low loads...
plus i need someone who has the combo of RX-V2600 and M80 runing on 5.1 or 7.1 system of axiom speakers i hope he would be able to give me some feedback on the issue runing them together.

Smirnov, welcome. You'll find the NRC measurements that were made in connection with an excellent review of the M22s here . It's highly likely that your 2600 will be fine. Although I have no speakers rated at less than a nominal 8 ohms impedance, I've experimented with running my M22s in parallel, which has resulted in a net impedance under 4 ohms at certain frequencies. I've had no problems with three rather modest receivers and this reinforces my view that, as long as the volume is kept within reasonable limits, low impedance loads can be successfully driven without resorting to monster(small m)amplification.
