Jason and I punished our eardrums some more today. It proved a nice distraction from my HP laptop woes.

This will be short and sweet. The two subs are miles apart in terms of sound and performance.

In my 4,000 cubic foot entertainment space (which opens up to the rest of my house via a tall staircase), the PB12 was under-powered. We could hear it cutting in and out when it was pushed. And I still had plenty left on my Denon's LFE output gain to punish it with.

The SVS had a good "thump" to it that I absolutely loved for movies. The 600 really tortured my fireplace during the U-571 depth charge scene as usual. The SVS was far more gentle but again it had that "snap" that is missing from my 600.

The thump was still there for music with the SVS and initially I exclaimed "That's what I need. That's what I'm talking about.". But after watching the Eagles Farewell Tour I for a while and switching back and forth between the two, I wasn't so convinced anymore. The EP600 involves you in the bass more. The bass isn't just "on top" with the 600; it is weaved in between all the other notes.

My wife also had a brief listen and she preferred the "softer" sound of the 600. After Jason left, she had an extremely unusual reaction to the SVS. She said she doesn't ever want to hear bass like that again!!!. Sorry Jason. She wasn't sure if she should be so forward when you were around. She said...and I'm quoting..."I couldn't pick out all the notes.". After she made that comment, I realized that some, and most likely even I, may get tired of the SVS's snappy, thwacky sound.

So I'm still looking for that sub that will exude involving, transparent, deep bass like the 600 but at the same time have that "snap" that hits you in the chest. Maybe I'm just asking for too much.

I just posted this under the Stereo forum:

Well I just got back home and unloaded the 74lb SVS after a rather quick session at Mojo's, as always it was a pleasure to get together with him once again.

After some initial listening and finally equalizing sub output(dead battery in the SPL meter), we had to run the SVS at near max volume output in order to have the subs equalized in Mojo's large room. We put in the venerable depth charge scene from U-571, as we both know this scene very well by now. The SVS appeared to have more impact than the EP600 but the EP600 was able to fill the room with LFE easier than the little SVS. With each explosion there was a definite slam from the PB12 while the EP600 would hit, but not as pronounced as the SVS. I prefered the SVS in this instance.

We moved on to the Eagles DVD - Live from Melbourne, Disc 2 - Dirty Laundry. The thump from the SVS was very pronounced compared to the Axiom, Tex's wife said she preferred the smoother more subdued sound of the EP600 than the harder punchiness of the PB12-NSD. I liked the pounding of the sub during this song, but after awhile at the loud levels we were listening, I too think I would have preferred the Axiom over the SVS for a long listening session. I know in my own house I usually never play it that loud and do not find the sub to be that over the top with the low notes, so I am not sure what to make of the difference. I guess maybe I am not as much of a bass freak I think.

Well I am still deciding on whether or not to bring the big PB13 - Ultra in and have a listen or sit tight with the PB12 which I am very happy with.

And Tex tell wife not to worry, I wouldn't have been offended, here comments just make think whether or not being able to hear all the notes is a bad thing or not. I think we may have had them turned up just a tad too much for my liking as well, but we were trying to hear the differences and the louder they were the easier it was to hear the differneces.

I will be by sometime to pick up the cd I left there as well, maybe when the PB13-Ultra shows up.

Ooops...the Stefani CD got left behind. In the meantime, I'll have Gwen all to myself .

I'll guess your daughter might like it.

I think that answers the question I posted in Jason's thread quite nicely.

Yeah, but make sure you also read my response in Jason's thread too because that will surely clarify it for you \:\) .

Mojo, do you think it is possible that the DSP chip causes the 'lack of snap' that you perceive?

What else am I going to do? Don't have any M80s or a sub to listen to yet. \:\(

Mojo and I had come to this conclusion and that the filters they chose to use in the amp could possibly be the issue as well.
