Hi, was just wondering what kind of bass I can expect with the 800. As I've mentioned in previous posts, I listen to a lot of "bassy" music (reggae, house, hiphop, rnb) so I like my bass "tight". I know for HT you want to have more of a rumble, but quite frankly, I listen to music more than I watch movies. So should the 800 be able to deliver tight thumps when listening to Bob (that would be Marley, of course)? I'm getting it anyhow, but just wondering.

I'm also wondering if I should invest in a 2-channel amp as well. I just picked up the Denon 3808, but I just read a post in a another thread where the guy was REALLY impressed with his Emotiva? amp. Would this be overkill for me, or money well spent?

I'll be making my final payment today, and the 800 ships out on monday so I'll let you know how it goes.
Posted By: CV Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/22/09 04:36 PM
The 800 ships on Monday, huh?
Posted By: onn Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/22/09 04:39 PM
Which Monday though, this monday, next monday, the first monday of next month?
Posted By: SirQuack Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/22/09 04:59 PM
being a sealed sub, it should work well for those selections, however, a lot depends on your room layout.
Posted By: jakewash Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/22/09 06:57 PM
The amp is your decision, wait to see if the Denon works for you, if you think you want more then go ahead and get a seperate amp to drive the M80s, no harm in getting more power, whether or not you will use the extra power is up to you.

I hope you're right... but...

Jason I suspect that if the EP-800 was going to ship out on (Monday!) someone who had preordered in November would have received a message something similar like................................your order has been shipped

yup. I say it ships the 3rd monday of the ninth month of this year
Posted By: EFalardeau Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/23/09 01:44 PM
3rd Monday on the ninth month? It's the 27th, isn't it?
Posted By: majik Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/23/09 04:21 PM
oh oh... what do you mean by "but"? I was just going by what Brent told me on the phone just before posting. Am i dreaming in digital sound to think my EP800 will ship as soon as this Monday?
Posted By: fredk Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/23/09 06:08 PM
Hopefully your conversation means that a bunch of people will be getting a 'your sub has shipped' email on Monday.
Posted By: majik Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/23/09 11:37 PM
Let's hope so! I'm really looking forward to getting the gear set-up!
Posted By: myrison Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/24/09 01:59 PM
Yes, I was just posting that because this is at least the 4th time a date has been communicated. I'm sure they've learned their lesson and this is the real deal, but I was just cautioning you not to get your hopes up too much given the experiences to date.
Posted By: majik Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/26/09 10:35 PM
Well, I've cleared up the credit card and will be paying the rest of my layaway tomorrow. I called today and was told that some have shipped out ("I think" - lol).

It's all good though, if they're not ready yet at least it looks like they're right around the corner!

Question... Who here is getting one of these Bad Boys??
Posted By: CV Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/27/09 03:54 AM
I'm getting a pair if there is a higher power.
Posted By: CV Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/27/09 04:49 PM
Axiom order shipped.

The estimated delivery date is next Tuesday. The pain of the upcoming weekend (when work won't occupy me) may do me in!

I bet you could drive down to Dwight and back faster than that \:\)

Are they coming palletized or something?
Posted By: jakewash Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/27/09 05:07 PM
CV, just hope customs doesn't decide to hold them for a week or 2 \:D

They might. I'm sure the shipment will look dangerous.
Posted By: onn Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/27/09 05:12 PM
Any word on Jason's EP-800 yet?

Posted By: SRoode Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/27/09 06:38 PM
I got notification today as well. Estimated delivery of two EP800's this Friday (I'm on the road now, so I won't be able to try em out till a week later) (ARRRGH!)
Posted By: myrison Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/27/09 07:53 PM
Yep, I'm in as well. Looks like delivery next week (Texas is oh so far away from Axiom). Yee-haw.
Posted By: CV Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/28/09 05:42 AM
FedEx changed the estimate to a day earlier, Monday the 2nd. It's actually the day that my former coworker guessed it would come. She guessed a couple of weeks ago. I don't know why she always ends up being right about stuff like this.

Posted By: majik Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/28/09 02:40 PM
Question:

vertical or horizontal (and yes, I'm talking about the subs... not your women! lol!).
Posted By: myrison Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/28/09 03:41 PM
Mine will be vertical, though there is really no meaningful difference in most cases if you want to lay it on its side after ordering the vertical version.

The main difference is where the holes are drilled to screw in the feet. Since I don't use feet/spikes/etc. either way, for me it's not a big difference.

Jason
Posted By: majik Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/28/09 08:25 PM
So if I ordered a horizontal... can I then put it vertical (you mentioned the other way around, I'm just checkin' to make sure).
Posted By: Ken.C Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/28/09 08:37 PM
Sure, but there will be 4 holes in one of the sides.
Posted By: majik Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/28/09 11:35 PM
WOOHOO! My epic 80 ep800 has been shipped!! Why oh why did I wait until Wednesday to make final payment, now I won't be seeing them until next week! BOOOOOO!

But hey, they're on their way, their on their way.... home sweet home!!! (20 bonus points to the one who can tell me the name and group of that song?)
Posted By: majik Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/28/09 11:36 PM
Meh... I can deal with the 4 holes as long as it doesn't interfere with sound.

majik,

You are one lucky man. You have major bragging rights to be one of the first people to receive an EP800. What is the weight of the package? You probably need atleast 2 people to carry it \:\) . Congratulations!

Cheers!

Heh! Well, the 2 EP500s are going back as part of the trade-in agreement. So, the only subs I will have will be the two EP800s.

Dang, now I"m wondering if I should consider trading in my 600 and 350's for an 800 (s)... I just wish Axiom would go wireless like the HSU 15's.

She said that the boxes were pretty beat up (you can see the speaker through one of the holes, and the boxes were very wet). Pictures in about 2 hours.

They are supposed to be a sealed design. ;\)

Unfortunately, you'll hear other's thoughts first... I won't be home to try them for another week \:\(
Posted By: SRoode Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/29/09 10:59 PM
The E-mail from my wife:

"Hi Hon,
I took couple of pictures before and after opening. The speakers look fine. They did a great job packing them. if it wasn't for the fine packing, the speakers would definitely be damaged. I opened up the top and also on the side where there was an opening. Both of them look good despite the condition of the boxes.
Love,
Eshain"

So again, Axiom comes through.

They are far too heavy for her to open them all the way up, so I'll have to rely on the next person's pix to see what they look like out of the box! Actually, Fedex left them outside the garage, and she pushed them in herself (she's only 5'-7", weighs 120 lbs... Lighter than one of the boxes!)
Posted By: EFalardeau Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 01/29/09 11:39 PM

Well, I can't spoil the fun yet, going to have to spend a day or two really feeling it out before responding in earnest.

Thus far I can only say, it was worth the wait! ;\)

How much BFD re-tuning was required? Was the EP800's room response singificantly different than the EP600?

Hey guys, sorry, been quite busy since getting the 800. I'm nowhere near having a complete review, but I'm going to start a new thread for everyone to post their EP800 thoughts & pictures rather than mixing them in here with the amp topic as well.

Jason
Posted By: majik Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/03/09 12:25 PM
Jason, where's the new thread?

And can anyone tell me how long I need to wait before cranking up the system? I called Axiom and the guys told me I could pretty much let loose and have a party as soon as I get them, but I've been hearing I need to break them in first.
Posted By: onn Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/03/09 12:40 PM
Not Jason but the EP 800 thread is in the Home Theater forum. Also you don't need to break in the speakers, just your ears
Posted By: majik Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/03/09 01:32 PM
So I can go ahead and crank it up this weekend if my order comes in today or tomorrow? I guess I could just get everything hooked up and play them continuously until friday night. Gonna be a whole lotta shake rattle n roll goin on!
Posted By: RickF Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/03/09 04:41 PM
You can crank that thing up the minute you get it hooked up and will not hurt a thing on the speaker, but I can't speak for the rest of the room though. ;\)

Congrats.
Posted By: jakewash Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/03/09 05:08 PM
You're not going to hurt anything, except maybe your ears, just use the system the way you would normally right from the start, you won't notice any differences in SQ.

I have read in the past where a company measured speaker break-in, it does take place, but they also stated the amounts were negligible and not enough to be audible, which upholds my idea that if speaker break-in is enough to be audible, then the same amount of time later after the initial break-in process takes place, that speaker should be sounding terrible. So if a speaker has an audibly different sound after the first 50hrs, then after 100hrs it should be noticeably different yet again and so on. So after a few years of use, those speakers should be nearly worn out and not sounding anything like they did during the first year of use. I would hope most companies are not using products that degrade this quickly.
Posted By: fredk Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/03/09 05:09 PM
I found the breaking period was about 3-4 months. I started off at just over 70db, but am now listening at closer to 80db. Of course its my ears that are breaking in. \:\)
Posted By: jakewash Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/03/09 09:08 PM
You're just starting to go deaf, still no break-in. ;\)
Posted By: BoB/335 Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/03/09 09:16 PM
Speaker break-in for guitar amps seems to be a very real issue on the guitar forums. I don't know anything first hand.

AAAAARGGGGHHHH!!! MY SPEAKERS WERE SOOOO CLOSE!! THEN PUROLATOR WENT AND RETURNED THEM TO SHIPPER!

For those who don't know, I live WAY up in Northern Quebec, Canada (that's why I couldn't audition the speakers first - I'll be the one hosting auditions when they FINALLY get here!). Anyhow, what happened is Purolator refused to come all the way up here and wanted to hand off the speakers to Canada Post in Val D'or, Quebec (that's where the closest "city" is for us - a 10 hour drive away). The problem is that Canada Post has a weight limit of 66lbs and refused to accept it. So without calling me or Axiom, Purolator just up and decided to bring the speakers back to shipper! I'm so effin' disappointed right now!

So I'm now waiting to see what the next move is. Like I said earlier... so close!!

I had this problem last year, trying to ship a mitre saw to my father on the west coast. I'm not sure why they put restrictions of 66lbs but they should definitely have contacted either yourself or Axiom instead of sending it back. Some of the bus companies (like Greyhound) will ship heavier items I believe.

Well, I received one M80, two QS, my vp150, and my axiom cable... still waiting on the ep800 and the other tower. IT'S KILLING ME! All I wanna do is spend the day hookin' the system up to the 3808, getting the right sweet sound... then I can have ppl over that want to audition them. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGGGHH! i'll keep you posted.

I'm usually the "all or nothing" kinda guy... I've had the 3808 for a few weeks now just sitting in the box waiting for its friends from Axiom so I can do the complete setup... but that's not such a bad idea Jay. I think I'll do that if they don't come in today.

Question about m80s... can i not just let the speakers sit on the floor without the rubber feet? I'll be getting carpet later and might use the spikes then, but I'm not a big fan of the feet.

And it looks like i'm going to wait to hook everything up as my riser for the TV and m80s isn't ready yet. going to hook up the m80s and the 800 for the party tonight though.

Maybe take the grills off and use a damp wash cloth to wipe them down? Or try one of those lint rollers that have the sticky tape on it.

Also, I think it is best to place the m80's on the feet (rubber or spiked)... at least that is what I was told.
Posted By: myrison Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/14/09 08:32 PM
I've never bothered putting any feet on my M80s (or the EP800). They sit fine on the carpet without. If I didn't have carpet I'd probably be more inclined to use the feet.

Another question... what kind of cable do I need for the 800? I've read the manual (they should really put pics in there for us dummies)... I don't have any special cables so I'm guessing rca is my only option right now. But can someone send a link for future reference, what would be the best cable to get?
Posted By: majik Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/14/09 10:20 PM
I have a prolink high resolution video interconnect... would that work... I'm clueless right now! This is my first high end sub. so i'm lost
Posted By: ClubNeon Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/14/09 11:05 PM
With subwoofers noise rejection of the cable is more important than low capacitance (which can cause high-frequency roll-off which is can be an issue with full-range interconnects, and definitely with video).

So a well shielded RCA cable is all you really need. If your receiver/pre-amp has a balanced output for the sub connection you can use a balanced cable ( http://www.axiomaudio.com/balancedcable.html ). If your receiver only has an RCA out, that's the best you're going to get; an RCA to XLR cable will be of no benefit (as this conversion is going to be performed better inside the sub's amp anyway).

But what you have now should work fine, as long as you aren't noticing hum (which may be picked up by running beside a power cable--ground loops are another matter).
Posted By: SirQuack Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/14/09 11:17 PM
For a sub just get some digital coax cable which comes with RCA ends, either RG59 or RG6 is fine, you don't need anything fancy. Monoprice is a very popular website online if you want killer prices and top notch quality.
Posted By: majik Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/14/09 11:29 PM
okay so this is what I have, a splitter with the 2 headed end being female (wanted to post a pic but don't know how here), I have 12g speaker wire with rca males. would that work? my party is in 2 hours! I'll look up monoprice.. i always get my cables from there too.
Posted By: majik Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/14/09 11:29 PM
oh, my splitter is really thin! cheap looking too...

k, I got everything set up but i'm not getting much out of the sub? it's working though, but I'm not can't seem to get it to pound out the bass?
Posted By: SirQuack Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/15/09 12:21 AM
What type of music are you listening to, it is possible it is not the type that plays the low frequencies.

Are you saying your using the thinner audio type interconnects, versus thicker like component or coax size?

when I push the volume i get respectable bass but not earth shaking like you would think... any ideas?

I've got the denon set to yes for sub
I have crossover at 120 (but tried them all really)
Power is set to max... and i'm really not impressed.

I know it's my settings/lack of knowledge... I was just hoping ot have it pumpin' for the party tonight.
Posted By: SirQuack Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/15/09 12:31 AM
On the receiver, all speakers should be set to small, with an 80hz crossover. The 800 crossover knob should be maxed out or on bypass to get it out of the way, since the receiver is controlling the bass management.

Are you using the subwoofer "pre out" on the back of the receiver, to the "input" on the sub, using cable like in the picture above, you mentioned a splitter, why would you need a splitter. Just a cable going from the receiver to the LFE Input on the sub with RCA connections.
Posted By: SRoode Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/15/09 02:09 AM
Agreed. If you only have one sub, there is no need for a splitter.
Posted By: SirQuack Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/15/09 02:14 AM
I'm just worried he is hooking something up wrong, which may be why he is not getting good performance from the 800.
Posted By: SRoode Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/15/09 09:26 AM
Are you sure you hooked up the sub to the "Sub Out" RCA connection on the back of the 3808? This should be connected directly to the sub "line in" without a splitter.
Posted By: majik Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/15/09 10:03 PM
yup, it's in the sub out and in the line in (and without splitter)... my old big box system had one that's why i thought I needed one.

the 800 just isn't pumping like I think it should. What's more is that the sub gives of more rumble than thump.

Tried the settings (80 crossover on the 3808 and bypass on the 800), and it did help a bit but even when I put the sub volume to max, it's there, but not "wow" there... if you know what i mean.

I'm wondering if maybe I turned the volume back to zero before connecting it to the 3808... in the manual it says to have it set 1/4 volume, which i did, but I'm thinking I may have 'absent-mindedly' turned back down for some reason. Would that make a difference? in the manual it says that the receiver may set the volume too low in that case.

Are you talking about the volume on the sub, or the level on the sub channel in the receiver?

What material are you using? I presume it is movies, but you didn't mention anything in previous posts.

When you say you are not getting the bass you should, is this compared to a previous sub?

Is the EP800 in a different location from what you had previously?
Posted By: Family Man Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/16/09 12:31 AM
You should try the sub woofer crawl. With subs its all about placement as with all speakers but especially subs. I find that even after a sub crawl, you may need another to flatten the responce of the room. i hope that this helps. I have a ep600 and had the same issues that you are encountering. the sub placement is night and day when you find the "spot"

hope that this helps.
Posted By: SRoode Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/16/09 01:14 AM
I have my EP800 set at 10 o'clock (my old EP500's were set at about 7 o'clock). Since the same internal amp is powering two drivers instead of one, you may need to turn the dial up a bit on the sub.
Posted By: majik Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/16/09 04:01 AM
Well, I don't know if this had anything to do with it, but when I was playing with the volume's knob yesterday, I realized that when I would turn it, it wasn't a "smooth" turn - the knob was a little crooked I think. Today, as I was testing/showing the sub to a friend, I turned the knob to max volume and it snapped of in my hand when I reached the limit point!! it broke straight at the base of the little bar the knob slides onto...

I just wrote Noreen an email, so hopefully something can be done!
Posted By: majik Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/16/09 04:04 AM
As for the other information, the sub really wasn't producing any more bass than my jvc big box sub that I got some 6 years ago.

who has set up the 800? and what are your settings?
Posted By: SirQuack Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/16/09 04:19 AM
that sub should blow you out of the water. My EP600's gain (volume) knob is like 6-7 o'clock, very lowwww. Also, you never really answered my ealier questions about what material your testing with, what type of music, movies, etc.

My basement is hugggggge, like 30ft x 31ft x 9ft, there is no way I could turn my 600 all the way up, the house would fall down.

Did you call the 800 main help line and talk to one of the techs, they man the phones late and can work with you, Noreen really is not the right person to call.
Posted By: onn Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/16/09 04:41 AM
I have my EP-800 set at 11:00 for gain but I'm still playing around with my settings and don't run my subs hot. My EP-500 by the way is set at 7:00
Posted By: majik Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/16/09 04:57 AM
ok, if you say you can't turn it all the way to max then there is definitely a problem... maybe my settings??

I had a party last night and we listened to every thing from house to rock to reggae.. and HIP HOP... where the bass should have been pumping! but it was almost a muffled bass... it's hard to describe... what about the switches on the back, anything I should know about there?
Posted By: SirQuack Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/16/09 01:26 PM
If it is like the 600, you want to set the Trim to "flat" for starters, crossover to bypass or cranked to the max, phase to 0 for starters.

What switches are you talking about?

Have you run the calibration test tones from the receiver, do you get the pink noise (static) sound when calibrating with the mic?
Posted By: onn Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/16/09 02:53 PM
Your Subsonic filter should be off and your phase at 0 to start
Posted By: majik Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/16/09 03:02 PM
haven't done the calibration test tones yet. I'll get that done today and see how that goes.

Looks like i'm going to have to pay to get the knob fixed... went to the gym today and my buddy that helped me move it says he felt something "catch" when we were laying down on the floor. just checked, and yep... there's a nick in the wooden t.v. stand right where the knob is/was.

Guess I have to call Noreen and let her know the what really happened.

I'd be real carful doing anything if the knob is stuck at full gain. I don't own one, but given the level of sub experience of those you have already heard from, finally getting a signal could damage the driver if you are not careful. Also, I would be concerned that you did more than break the knob. Assuming Axiom used a good gain attenuation device, you might have damaged the device before the knob broke. Just saying, be careful are you might be replacing more than a knob! And could be on your dime as you have publicly admitted it was due to a bad install. Ouch. Then again, for the price of an 800, I’d expect it to very hard to break a control – how hard did he hit it?
Posted By: RickF Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/16/09 03:33 PM
If the knob broke at the peak level, couldn't he turn the sub's output level max down on the receiver and use the receiver to adjust the volume on the sub for a temporary fix until the knob issue gets resolved.

Zimm, these subs are very heavy, whenever it hits something it has a lot of mass backing it up, he probably wouldn't have had to hit something very hard to break the knob ... the weight and size can definitely be a PIA whenever it comes to moving these big subs around.

Posted By: Zimm Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/16/09 04:28 PM
They certainly look heavy. I'm getting woofer envy.

I'm using balanced cables. What do you mean by the results being bad?
Posted By: onn Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/16/09 10:38 PM
If I set-up using balanced cables I can't make enough adjustments to level the sound dB's. This morning I did an experiment using RCA vs XLR
These settings stayed the same throughout the test.
My sub output in the Pre-pro was at 0 dB (no lower setting)
I used auto set-up

Crossover Frequency 150
Volume / Gain EP-500 6 O'clock
EP-800 9 O'clock

Started with the RCA cables
FL +0.5 dB
FR +1.0 dB
C -0.5
SL -1.5
SR -3.0
EP-500 -2.5
EP-800 +1.0

Next the XLR cables not changing any settings
FL +0.5
FR +1.0
C -0.5
SL -1.5
SR -3.0
EP-500 -12.0
EP-800 +12.0

So my dilemma is, in order to even out my sub I either have to lower the output in the pre-pro ( can't it's at the minimum ), Increase the vol / gain on the EP-800 ( can't increase it enough to come close to the EP-500 ), decrease the gain in the EP-500 ( can't same reason as above )
I'm now wondering if the XLR connection on the EP-500 is faulty? I tried to adjust the gain on the back and it was either very low level or when I moved it slightly to increase the gain it would go to max sound level ( no gradual increase, all or nothing ). So if anyone is still awake that's my problem.
Brent from Axiom is looking into it.

Seems like Dennis (Tharkun) had issues with his two 600s way back when and I'm thinking it was finally discovered the cause was the XLR connections ... anybody remember that?

Those of you with the 800... I'd like to know what your settings are so i can try a few things out.

The muffled sound/lack of bass on the 800 was BEFORE we moved the sub. so I know the volume knob thing had nothing to do with it. I spoke to JC today and we're going to take care of it, and it's not going to cost too much (thank God!!)... I really like, respect - am completely impressed with - the people at axiom!! They could have taken advantage of a newbie like me, and didn't even hint at trying to make me pay extravagant fees for the mishap!

By the way, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE M80S!!! HOLY SH*T!!! I have the streem 808s... and they're not bad at all (for the price i paid), but WOW... what a difference! Now I know what ppl mean by "a life changing experience"... it's true! We pumped up the volume on the M80s LOUD and NO distortion whatsoever... and we didn't even come CLOSE to max volume! I'm an axiomite for life now! without a doubt! can't wait to hook up the center and surrounds.

Posted By: majik Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/17/09 02:26 AM
oh and by the way, thanks onn... I'm stealing your idea for another set of M80s to use as surrounds, and I'll use the Q8s as rears in a 7.1!

I have been completely transformed! I used to travel 3 or 4 times a year, but it looks like I'll have to cut that down to 2 or 3 now... I've been bitten by the audio/home theater bug!
Posted By: majik Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/17/09 02:32 AM
is it wise to put the 800 in front of the screen (i got the horizontal)... and the center right behind it? on its stand?
Posted By: SirQuack Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/17/09 02:44 AM
Majik, did JC have any ideas on why your 800 is not performing? I think you would be fine as long as the center is not touching the sub as it might vibrate a little.

My horizontal 600 was below my center for a long time, the center was mounted on the wall with some shelf brackets.

Posted By: RickF Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/17/09 02:48 AM
Randy do you think the 600 will vibrate the center? I personally wouldn't put the center on the sub myself but I was just curious if the enclosure on the 600 would vibrate that much? I like that 600 sitting horizontal, looks good with your setup.

Hey Rick, I don't think I would put the center on the sub. I think majik is talking about putting it behind the sub on a seperate stand.

This picture is an old one, my 600 is now in the back rear corner of the room, and my 350's are up front spread out next to my 80's...

I'm an axiomite for life now! without a doubt! can't wait to hook up the center and surrounds.

Majik the final setting I have for my EP-800 is 11 O'clock on the back volume and +1.0 dB on the pre-pro level output. So I can still turn the sub up another quarter turn on the sub and another +11.0 dB's on the pre-pro. I don't like to run my sub hot like I think you like to do.
The M80's I'll agree are some great sounding speakers. \:\)

I think a lot of car sub bass heads think that subs in a home theater environment is the same as in a small enclosed car/truck.

Feeling the sub operating has its place and listening to music is not one of those times. Watching a movie is the most likely spot I would enjoy the vibs \:\)

I'm also liking the idea of two 500s at the front while the 800 is at the back... but I'm going to hold off on that to see if I can get the 800 working properly.

sirquack, I'm not a car bass head. I do like bass though, as i said in a previous post, my small little jvc big box home theater bass was giving more thump than the 800. I'm telling you, I think I just did something wrong with the settings, because there was no rattling of the windows, no big thumping. There was no wow factor whatsoever. Is that normal? Even my friends were saying the same thing - i must have the settings wrong. One of them thought the only other issue could be a faulty driver - which i'm praying to god it's not.

I'm thinking there is a problem with the sub. Best way to tell? Hook up a CD player directly to the EP800 and see if that produces significant amounts of bass (turn the volume down on the sub, first...)

Feeling a bridge fall is great, but a stand-up bass can be felt. A bass guitar can be felt. A kick drum can be felt. All of these add a dramatic tactile aspect to music that is closer to live - not manufactured. Subs absolutely play a role in music. And "car bass heads" covers a wide swath of audiophiles that don't limit their musical enjoyment to their home as well as cheap systems designed to generate SPL. I'm sure most people would think putting thousands of dollars in to "boom" in a typical residential room would be more offensive than the occasional "car bass head" with his $150 sub. Cars just don't contain the bass much, no matter if you are listening to accurate bass or looking to rattle the nearest driver's mirrors. Bass-head or not, I think for the price of an ep800 no one should be confused if it is working or not. Heck, that's true of a $500 sub.

I also think there might be something wrong with the sub, even if some of your settings are a little off, it should still give you something.

I would try resetting the Denon to defaults maybe. I know you said you tried cranking up the volume on the sub, but what levels do you have it turned on the receiver? Are you absolutely sure your using the "preouts" for the sub channel?

A cpu reset would be a great idea. Someone else had a problem similar to this a while back and it went away as soon as they flashed the cpu. Had some setting deep in the guts that was messing up the sound.

What would be a good CD / DVD / SACD / Bluray to really test the EP-800?
Posted By: Zimm Re: ep800 info and 2 channel amp - 02/17/09 11:10 PM
Kung Fu Panda has some bass, Blue Man Group DVD has bass galore, I've heard Master and Commander has very detiled low bass (need to try the BR). Dire Straits, Brothers in Arms CD, Ride Across the River. Just some random ideas. Ray Brown Trio has fantastic standup bass recorded very well on CD. Eminem - pick a CD - will rattle your shingles, same with Prodogy. Motley Crue's latest has great bass guitar notes if that is your speed.

Master and Commander has some really good bass in it, Charles. I've auditioned some HTs with it and the cannon shots in the distance, through the fog are incredible, as is the crashing and splintering of wood when the shots hit. Excellent effects. Eminem? really, Charles?

I didn't say that.

And if I did, it was a private conversation between consenting adults. And some of his songs are not bad. And the bass will freak you out - almost shot my woofer into my lap.

Hmm...

You can find U571 cheap if you don't have it. That's a sub workout.

There's a single scene in Finding Nemo where the little girl taps on the aquarium. That (briefly) distorts my poor Paradigm sub if I forget to turn it down first. Should do wonders with an 800.

LOTR DVDs, plenty of stuff there.

the tapping glass scene is a great test.
