I am considering the QS8 surround to be placed in the back corners of a 13 x 22 room. I will not be wall mounting - will be using the Axiom QS8 stands. Will keeping the speakers at this level compromise the surround effect? I would even consider placing the stands themselves on an elevated platform of some sorts.
Would appreciate thoughts on this.

Thanks,
Mark

We spoke about this last night a little. If you look at the picture, it looks like the speaker does sit on top of the stand. I guessing people on here will say the sound will be fine...QS8's seem to be forgiving placement wise, but I wouldn't think it would hurt to have it on something.

As far as your fronts, after what I've been reading I'd give the M60's a demo...if you can fit them in your budget. Sounds like detail and fullness all rolled up in one!

Jason,

I was going to say the same to you about the M60s.
Did you place your order yet?

I way beyond my 30 day period. You at least still have time

I think to switch now Axiom only gives 25% back on the original purchase....I'd have to sell mine elsewhere. Want some Boston Cherry M22's?
Posted By: spiffnme Re: QS8 placment - 08/07/03 11:06 PM
Axiom's are hold on to their value really well. I just sold my Cherry M22's for $325. So you won't be losing your shirt if you decide to sell them and put that money towards some M60's. Throw an add on audiogon, and you'll sell them.

those were yours on audiogon? I almost bought them...I think you never returned my email!

I replied to everyone!

I'd have to hear the M60's and compare them before I was ready to upgrade. I haven't had the M22's for all that long, so I don't know that I want to go down that road....although I guess there may be a little extra money floating around since I get married the end of the month
Posted By: JohnK Re: QS8 placment - 08/08/03 02:37 AM
Congratulations, Jason; but if you think that means extra money, you'll learn.
Posted By: Zarak Re: QS8 placment - 08/08/03 04:01 AM
Oh, I realize it won't long term...just for the short time before any wedding present money is all spent. I'm guessing she's not thinking any of it is earmarked for speakers though...lol
Posted By: MarkT Re: QS8 placment - 08/08/03 04:15 AM
...especially speakers that have the potential to play much louder!

I only had my M22's for about 4+ months, but once I heard the M60's there was no going back.

I feel bad saying that though, because it makes it sound like the M22's are bad. They're not! For $400 they're amazing! Axiom squeezed every penny of that $400 into those speakers! But likewise, they've milked that $800 that the M60's go for for everything it's worth as well!

Yeah Axiom!

spiff,

You may just push me over the edge to the M60s - I spent 3 more hours tonight listening to the Ascend 340s and the M22s and have decided to go with the Axioms - still with the desire to have the fullness with the detail. I am considering ordering the M60s and keeping the M22s to A/B test. Definitely will order the QS8s as well.

This was a decision that was months in the making and I am glad to finally be decided one way or the other. I really appreciate all of your comments (as well as the all others on this and other forums) over the past months and will keep you posted on what I end up with.

I have almost the same room dimensions. 60's and 8's are the right choice for my room. I don't think you'll be disappointed. I have my surrounds wall mounted. What receiver will you have?

didn't work for me....

What worked for you the best?
Posted By: MarkT Re: QS8 placment - 08/08/03 12:50 PM
I have the Pioneer 45TX - just want to make sure that I am OK with the distance from the M60s - only sitting about 9 feet back from them.
Posted By: Zarak Re: QS8 placment - 08/08/03 12:55 PM
Sounds like another listening session

Too bad the time on the 340's is up...I'd like to compare their fullness to the M60's as well.
Posted By: MarkT Re: QS8 placment - 08/08/03 01:43 PM
The problem is that I think one more comparison like that would throw me over the edge right now.

I too spent MONTHS deciding on a pair of speakers. I bought and paid for Energy C-3's, Axiom M22's, Energy Veritas 2.2's and then finally the Axiom M60's. Not to mention the dozens of speakers I demo'd in stores and other peoples homes. I'm happy to say that I'm done. I don't even have a desire to hunt down the next best thing. I'm very content with the M60's.

Try kitchen appliances. Kitchenaid's a big favorite around our house!
As for the audio, I've got to buy that out of my monthly "allowance."
Posted By: MarkT Re: QS8 placment - 08/08/03 06:20 PM
And where you are at now is my goal. I am at least glad to have it narrowed down to one manufacturer. Hopefully the decision between the M22 and M60 will not be as long in duration.
Posted By: spiffnme Re: QS8 placment - 08/08/03 06:30 PM
I doubt it will. If you have both the M22 and M60's in your home, you'll not want to part with the M60's.
Posted By: HGP Re: QS8 placment - 08/09/03 08:11 AM
Having done it, I agree Craig.
Posted By: HawKe Re: QS8 placment - 08/12/03 11:53 PM
haha, thought this thread was about QS8 placement!

Having now heard both the M22ti(s) and the M80's, I can say that going with the M60's is a no-brainer (as the owner of the company states that the 80's are just like the 60's but can play louder, I'll trust him).

If you are leaning towards the upgrade - fear not - you'll be completely satisfied. The highs are clearer (can you believe it) and the low end blends in/slopes much better with a sub. You'll want to cross your sub at around 60Hz, but of course feel free to experiment with your room.

Enjoy!
Posted By: spiffnme Re: QS8 placment - 08/13/03 12:38 AM
For music, I actually crossover at 40hz. For movies I tweak it up to 60 or 80.

Damn I love my M60's.

Stop making me want to upgrade!!

And I agree with Zarak. Stop making me want the M60s! They'd never pass the WAF test!
Posted By: Zarak Re: QS8 placment - 08/13/03 10:20 PM
The WAF part is no hinderance for me...she actually PREFERS towers...she doesn't like the speaker stand look too much.
Posted By: Ken.C Re: QS8 placment - 08/13/03 11:03 PM
Oh, my wife doesn't like "boxes on sticks", so I'm going to have to compromise a little more and put the bookshelves on, well, bookshelves (open top, open back, so not too much problem there). Unless I can talk her into towers as being better looking. So until I get a house with a dedicated home theatre/listening room (ha ha ha...), I can't get gigantonormous towers or Magnepans.

I love my wife... M80ti(s) AND a 92" wide projection screen.. she loves actions films almost as much as I do!
Posted By: sushi Re: QS8 placment - 08/14/03 09:37 PM
I might have said this already on these boards but... My wife is LESS room decor-conscious than myself; I'm the visually picky one. We’ve been living in our current house for over 8 years, and we still don’t have any window treatment in the living room and she says it's perfect as it is (thus, no movies till after dark LOL). When we were choosing the sub, I was the one who adamantly refused the cylinder designs. I guess this is a benefit of having a scientist as wife -- an essentially infinite WAF. HAHAHA…

OK, but who does the laundry and cleans the bathrooms???
Posted By: sushi Re: QS8 placment - 08/15/03 03:18 AM
I do the "easy" part of the laundry, which is running the washer and dryer. Wife and the three daughters do the "tedious" part, i.e., sorting, folding and putting them back to the closets. As for the bathrooms and showers, whoever uses it in a "major way" cleans it right after use. Once a week, a professional cleaner comes in and cleans up all rooms. Next question?
Posted By: BigWill Re: QS8 placment - 08/15/03 05:33 PM
"A professional cleaner"... I like that. Connotates respect rather than servitude.
Posted By: sushi Re: QS8 placment - 08/15/03 11:29 PM
Thanks for the kind words, Mark. My wife and I always try to treat the person we long-term hire as our close friend, or even like a family member.

We hired this young American woman as nanny shortly after moving to the US from Japan 12 years ago. She is still working as our full-time nanny today! Essentially, she raised our three daughters; they regard her more as an elder sister than as nanny. We are obviously very proud of our nanny. Everybody tells us that we are extremely lucky to find such an excellent nanny and then be able to keep her for 12 years. But I think this is largely due to my wife's ability to show respect and appreciation, and treat her as a family member and friend rather than a service provider. I am proud of my wife in these regards, too.
