I know nothing about room treatments. I am setting up a new system in a new room. The room is approximately 16 x20 with the 20' length being only 16' in one corner where there is an indent.

My first choice for speaker location is along the 16' wall facing into the 20' length. However, that wall has a 6' x 6' window (2' off the ground) that would be located between the two speakers.

Does a window behind the speakers have any significant effect on the sound? Would curtains help any?

Try the speakers out first. If you find the treble is too exaggerated, then you can consider some absorbent curtains over the window. If you were using bipolar or omnipolar speakers, which use rear-facing drivers, then the windows might significantly affect the tonal balance.

Normal furnishings of room interiors -- fabric-covered couches, area rugs, bookcases, etc. are usually sufficient to create a mix of absorbent and reflective surfaces, which is what you should be aiming for. The need for room "treatments" is greatly exaggerated. Problems with deep bass boominess can usually be solved by re-positioning the speakers or listening chairs/couches within the room.
